UNL – McNair Scholars Program – Meet Brittany
Meet Brittany Brakenhoff, an alumna from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln McNair Scholars Program, which prepares selected undergraduates for graduate study by providing opportunities to define goals, engage in research, and develop the skills and student/faculty mentor relationships critical to success at the doctoral level. [00:00:06.942]I'm Brittany Brakenhoff,
[00:00:08.182]my major was Family Science.
[00:00:10.041]I have a one and a half year old son Grant,
[00:00:12.361]and since I'm in the couple and family therapy program
[00:00:14.501]they're pretty supportive of families, right?
[00:00:16.902]My specific interest is more in,
[00:00:18.781]so it's in family therapy,
[00:00:20.342]but I wanna use family therapy to help in the treatment
[00:00:22.961]of substance abuse disorders.
[00:00:24.541]I grew up with a mom who struggled with addiction,
[00:00:26.822]and there wasn't a lot of family support for that,
[00:00:29.001]but I just want to use my work to help
[00:00:30.442]those really under-served vulnerable populations,
[00:00:32.562]like homeless youth,
[00:00:33.462]and substance using populations.
[00:00:35.322]I was in a family science class,
[00:00:37.442]and the professor of that class just sent me an email,
[00:00:40.141]just telling me about the McNair Scholarship Program,
[00:00:42.742]and I was only a sophomore in college when I started it,
[00:00:45.942]so because I started when I was a sophomore,
[00:00:47.961]I still had two more years left in the program,
[00:00:49.701]so I got lots of training that way,
[00:00:51.902]and nobody in my family had really been
[00:00:54.042]to graduate school before,
[00:00:55.182]so I wouldn't have even thought about going,
[00:00:56.902]or known what graduate school was,
[00:00:58.682]so what was helpful about the McNair program
[00:01:00.521]was that they have all the knowledge
[00:01:02.521]about what graduate school is,
[00:01:03.601]but just always having somebody there to ask for help,
[00:01:05.562]like my application,
[00:01:06.421]or to talk about where I wanted to go,
[00:01:08.162]just the, since I didn't have a family
[00:01:10.201]that was familiar with that stuff,
[00:01:11.522]to have people knowledgeable in that,
[00:01:12.781]to kind of talk through and make those decisions.
[00:01:14.922]I don't think that I would've probably been going
[00:01:16.702]to graduate school if I hadn't been in the McNair Program,
[00:01:19.602]giving me the resources to know what to look for
[00:01:21.781]in a graduate program,
[00:01:22.782]and also giving me that,
[00:01:24.181]I guess what was really key into getting
[00:01:25.922]into graduate school was having research experience,
[00:01:28.222]so giving me that early research experience
[00:01:30.861]made my application for graduate school really competitive.
