- [00:00:00.000](relaxing, upbeat music)
- [00:00:05.919]My name is Morgan McCain and I'm a former McNair scholar
- [00:00:10.155]that just defended her dissertation.
- [00:00:12.534]My favorite thing about the McNair Scholars Program
- [00:00:16.673]is that you really have this grand community.
- [00:00:19.534]I mean it's a national organization that's
- [00:00:21.584]part of the trio programming, and so
- [00:00:23.534]I've really
- [00:00:25.801]appreciated
- [00:00:27.567]the connections I've been able to build
- [00:00:28.672]with people when we find out
- [00:00:30.803]that we're both McNair scholars and so
- [00:00:32.651]if I love the communal aspect of it
- [00:00:36.361]and the support you get as part of being
- [00:00:38.171]a part of that community.
- [00:00:41.074](upbeat music)
- [00:00:44.271]I'm Brittany Brakenhoff.
- [00:00:45.944]My major was family science.
- [00:00:47.332]I have a one and a half year old son, Grant.
- [00:00:49.979]Nobody in my family had really been
- [00:00:51.832]to graduate school before
- [00:00:52.714]so I wouldn't have even thought about going
- [00:00:54.900]or known what graduate school was,
- [00:00:56.808]so what was helpful about the McNair program
- [00:00:58.571]is that they have all the knowledge about
- [00:01:00.397]what graduate school is and just always having
- [00:01:02.110]somebody there to ask for help,
- [00:01:03.589]like my application board to talk about
- [00:01:05.818]where I wanted to go
- [00:01:06.651]just since I didn't have a family that was familiar
- [00:01:09.082]with that stuff to have people knowledgeable in that
- [00:01:10.742]to kinda talk through and make those decisions.
- [00:01:13.314](upbeat music)
- [00:01:16.927]My name is Daniel Rico and I'm an electrical engineering
- [00:01:19.129]student here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:01:20.906]and also a McNair Scholar.
- [00:01:22.929]My favorite thing about the McNair Scholar program
- [00:01:25.377]is probably just the overarching opportunities
- [00:01:28.581]they provide to you and the assistance
- [00:01:30.666]through the entire process
- [00:01:32.184]from being an undergrad who is new to research
- [00:01:34.258]who doesn't know how to write a proposal,
- [00:01:35.731]who doesn't even know about the GRE for potential
- [00:01:38.143]graduate school applications,
- [00:01:39.292]how significant that can be,
- [00:01:42.222]and, you know, all the way until giving you more and more
- [00:01:44.476]independence and providing you still
- [00:01:46.070]with that information necessary.
- [00:01:48.205]In regards to graduate school
- [00:01:49.527]and how the McNair program has helped me
- [00:01:50.848]I believe it's helped me significantly.
- [00:01:53.127](relaxing upbeat music)
- [00:01:58.254]I am Zully and I am a student
- [00:02:00.399]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:02:02.811]I'm currently a McNair Scholar.
- [00:02:05.748]The community here is very welcoming
- [00:02:08.595]but also supportive to help you grow as a scholar.
- [00:02:12.472]Also my graduate mentor for McNair,
- [00:02:15.278]his name is Zachary Stewart, and most important
- [00:02:18.529]what I like about him is how excited he is
- [00:02:21.771]about the research that he does.
- [00:02:23.527]McNair has helped me
- [00:02:26.933]keep searching for what my
- [00:02:30.067]desire is for a career.
- [00:02:32.325](upbeat music)
- [00:02:38.658]So my name is Marco Gullickson.
- [00:02:39.999]I'm originally from Omaha, Nebraska.
- [00:02:41.521]I attended the UNL as an undergrad
- [00:02:43.440]and I am a McNair Alumni.
- [00:02:50.751]When I was in elementary, I worried about
- [00:02:51.833]hey, can I do Middle School?
- [00:02:53.164]And I get into middle school and I'm like (slaps and snaps)
- [00:02:54.842]I can do this.
- [00:02:55.675]Middle school to high school I was like,
- [00:02:56.508]ooh, can I do high school?
- [00:02:57.341]I went to high school and I was (snaps)
- [00:02:58.498]I did really well at it.
- [00:02:59.781]And the same for college now.
- [00:03:01.228]For college to graduate school, the McNair program
- [00:03:05.020]is actually what solidified my confidence and my belief
- [00:03:07.740]that I can handle graduate level work and research.
- [00:03:11.727]Getting into the McNair program
- [00:03:12.860]was
- [00:03:14.572]one of the biggest things
- [00:03:15.484]that I've ever done and one of the biggest things
- [00:03:17.212]I am most proud of.
- [00:03:19.339](upbeat music)
