[00:00:20.135]from Tech Edge and today I'm going to
[00:00:21.603]talk to you about summer writing.
[00:00:24.254]Summer is a great opportunity to do
[00:00:26.090]concentrated projects and also to do
[00:00:27.863]some extensive writing.
[00:00:30.106]Because kids have different experiences,
[00:00:33.043]it is an opportunity to reflect
[00:00:34.389]on these experiences and to keep them in their memory
[00:00:36.973]and when I say writing,
[00:00:38.049]I actually mean composition in a more general way
[00:00:41.309]of thinking about composition.
[00:00:42.649]It is not just words,
[00:00:43.967]but it is also movement,
[00:00:45.371]potentially video and definitely some kind of
[00:00:48.650]graphic representation.
[00:00:49.811]It can be picture you take
[00:00:51.023]with your camera,
[00:00:52.281]whether it is a digital camera
[00:00:53.485]or your device and devices are more common right now
[00:00:56.327]than actual digital cameras,
[00:00:58.195]although both are possible.
[00:00:59.598]Even things you take with your computer
[00:01:01.691]and definitely things you draw,
[00:01:03.508]kids draw on their own on a piece of paper
[00:01:06.139]and create and then we can transfer
[00:01:08.308]them to digital format by taking a picture of them
[00:01:11.145]or scanning them and creating this representation
[00:01:14.833]that comes together when you combine
[00:01:17.320]text and other information together mostly visual
[00:01:21.929]but it could also be audio as well.
[00:01:24.594]For example, we can take audio, record audio of nature.
[00:01:30.141]We can record the birds early in the morning.
[00:01:32.239]We can record whales if we are there to see whales
[00:01:34.687]or anything else that happens.
[00:01:36.963]You can actually really create multimedia products
[00:01:40.585]and we really want kids to start practicing
[00:01:43.329]creating this kind of writing
[00:01:45.434]because this is really what appeals
[00:01:48.953]and this is what technology really
[00:01:50.738]affords right now as we tell stories.
[00:01:54.184]I'd like to talk about the few options
[00:01:56.243]and the first option I want to talk about
[00:01:57.807]is My Diary.
[00:01:59.022]My Diary is an app on the Chromebook,
[00:02:02.508]and in My Diary, you can create diary entries
[00:02:05.771]as expected but what you can see here
[00:02:08.488]is you can again create this multimedia product,
[00:02:11.890]where you insert pictures, video, files,
[00:02:15.280]emoticons, tables or draw directly on it,
[00:02:19.629]or of course you can just start writing.
[00:02:23.838]There are some tips here and you can format,
[00:02:26.487]but again I would argue that
[00:02:31.402]that you don't want to play too much with formatting,
[00:02:34.207]especially early on because we want kids
[00:02:35.971]to actually be focused on the creation side.
[00:02:39.784]This is my first entry.
[00:02:43.260]And let's add a picture, so it said
[00:02:46.008]okay how do I insert a picture
[00:02:48.114]and I can upload it from local
[00:02:51.949]or I can use a link.
[00:02:55.687]So I can add a specific file.
[00:02:58.964]I can go to my pictures file
[00:03:02.271]and look for a picture that I want to include.
[00:03:05.080]This is a picture of my son for quite a while ago,
[00:03:07.423]but it does not matter.

[00:03:39.267]and also if you are sharing it with multiple

[00:03:48.949]as kids go out on vacation
[00:03:50.288]they can actually keep the conversation going
[00:03:52.815]while they are vacation see what their friends are doing
[00:03:55.893]which is a great way to share
[00:03:57.384]in a safe environment that is contained.

[00:04:02.939]this is a simple interface
[00:04:04.489]that is very, very user friendly
[00:04:06.352]and open to all of these extra media
[00:04:11.740]that makes that composition rich.

[00:04:18.560]This one is called My Diary.
[00:04:20.355]I find this very user friendly.

[00:04:25.671]This is Sway and Sway is from Microsoft.
[00:04:29.700]It is a new product that allows you to do
[00:04:31.315]presentations and creations.
[00:04:33.347]It has an emphasis on multimedia.
[00:04:35.683]You do need a Microsoft login.
[00:04:37.453]You can have multiple authors in this one.
[00:04:39.645]So unlike My Diary where it is your diary
[00:04:41.903]this can be a joint product
[00:04:43.714]that a group does together.
[00:04:45.674]It has an emphasis again on media,
[00:04:47.328]so these are pictures I just took this morning and added.
[00:04:49.667]I had by the way used Sway on my iPad,
[00:04:52.147]so it works on the iPad as well,
[00:04:55.762]but the options on a Chromebook or a laptop
[00:05:00.360]are a little bit better
[00:05:01.822]and a little bit easier to control.
[00:05:04.037]There are lot of ways to do some design there,
[00:05:09.241]and there is actually a way to play it,
[00:05:11.199]so it plays slowly.
[00:05:12.605]Now I have only very few pictures,
[00:05:14.483]so there's not much to show.
[00:05:17.251]Again lots of opportunities to share.
[00:05:20.136]This one is very good at documenting
[00:05:22.704]any projects you do over the summer
[00:05:25.170]or during the school year,
[00:05:26.330]so it is fantastic to create,
[00:05:27.831]to document your travels.
[00:05:31.406]As you are going from place to place,
[00:05:32.945]you can add pictures, you can add texts.
[00:05:35.246]It is fairly easy to do both

[00:05:46.848]and it changes the background and the way things
[00:05:48.811]are organized, so you can be
[00:05:50.808]really creative quickly and see if there are
[00:05:52.920]some things that you want to change.
[00:05:55.247]And then you can insert images.

[00:06:41.280]based on the words you choose,
[00:06:43.989]and that's great because you can just
[00:06:45.582]drag and drop things and they just get added
[00:06:49.476]to the Sway you just created.
[00:06:51.035]It can be your own media
[00:06:52.196]but there is lots of suggestions from media
[00:06:54.066]from the outside, so Sway is really, really cool.
[00:06:57.818]The last thing that I want to remind
[00:07:01.886]or the last couple of apps that I want to show,
[00:07:07.514]one is iDiary and there's a bunch of
[00:07:10.131]these diaries that are available on the iPads.
[00:07:12.646]I love them because unlike a Chromebook
[00:07:15.926]or a Notebook computer, you can actually take it
[00:07:20.039]and write on it everywhere you are.
[00:07:22.537]They are well charged and therefore
[00:07:24.716]they allow you to really create on the spot,
[00:07:27.905]while on the move, as long as your device is charged,
[00:07:31.423]you are ready to go and it is considerably
[00:07:33.081]more comfortable than for example having
[00:07:35.716]the laptop on your knees in the car
[00:07:38.326]or in a campsite or something like that.
[00:07:40.228]The advantage for me with the iPad
[00:07:42.818]or even phones is they are truly mobile
[00:07:45.414]and they can be anywhere and they function
[00:07:47.583]extremely well whereas the notebooks and the Chromebooks
[00:07:50.271]are a little bit more cumbersome
[00:07:51.779]and you tend to have a more organized workspace
[00:07:54.368]to create it.
[00:07:55.455]This is where I would use the iPads
[00:07:58.576]as a choice or other tablets as well.
[00:08:00.900]Today, we talked a little bit about
[00:08:02.728]summer writing and summer writing
[00:08:05.497]is a great time to do some writing because
[00:08:07.887]kids have lots of new experiences,
[00:08:09.502]lots of new ideas and therefore
[00:08:11.048]they are using a really creative opportunities
[00:08:16.634]without having school like assignments.
[00:08:20.199]It is a great time to explore.
[00:08:21.476]It is a great time to do without feeling like
[00:08:26.435]you have to produce within a certain amount of time
[00:08:28.616]or to a specification that isn't yours.
[00:08:31.246]It is a creative time
