- [00:00:00.195](gentle guitar music)
- [00:00:02.948]My name is Colton.
- [00:00:03.781]And I am a community and regional planning student
- [00:00:05.630]at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:08.024]I'm from a really small town
- [00:00:08.965]in Nebraska called Stromsburg.
- [00:00:10.652]It's a great place, a great place to grow up.
- [00:00:12.881]Stromsburg's claim to fame is
- [00:00:14.193]that it's the sweet capital of Nebraska.
- [00:00:17.699]I think the small town aspects of life that I grew up in
- [00:00:21.008]that kind of allowed me to see the concept
- [00:00:23.433]of planning in a different way.
- [00:00:25.352]Community and regional planning is
- [00:00:26.708]the study of communities and public space
- [00:00:29.311]and all the people within a city.
- [00:00:31.720]And it's looking at that and seeing how it works,
- [00:00:33.975]and how you can make it better.
- [00:00:35.633]My relationship with the faculty is special
- [00:00:36.731]because they come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- [00:00:40.569]And they're very approachable.
- [00:00:42.078]So if I have any issues or questions at all,
- [00:00:44.513]their doors are always open to me.
- [00:00:46.544]Another great thing about the planning program
- [00:00:48.081]is that you can come from any background.
- [00:00:50.200]There's criminal justice, architecture, accounting,
- [00:00:53.139]economics, natural resources, environmental studies.
- [00:00:56.028]There's tons of backgrounds you
- [00:00:57.457]can come from for this program.
- [00:00:59.251]So, I'm able to learn from my peers
- [00:01:01.132]in a way that another program might not allow you to do.
- [00:01:05.629]One of my favorite projects is something I'm working on now.
- [00:01:07.943]It's an analysis of a neighborhood in Lincoln.
- [00:01:10.304]Where I'm able go in and talk
- [00:01:11.559]to local business owners in community at large.
- [00:01:16.127]And we're going to look and see
- [00:01:17.771]what these people want from the community,
- [00:01:19.592]what their insights might be,
- [00:01:20.725]because it's very important to not
- [00:01:22.345]just develop plans on this overarching way,
- [00:01:25.499]but actually go into the community
- [00:01:27.179]and see what it is that they want,
- [00:01:28.433]what they need, and what they wanna do.
- [00:01:30.265](gentle guitar music)
- [00:01:33.823]When I'm not studying or being a student,
- [00:01:35.483]I walk around, I look at nature.
- [00:01:37.878]I go to all the parks and trails
- [00:01:39.735]that Lincoln has to offer.
- [00:01:41.217]All the cool restaurants.
- [00:01:42.729]There's tons of stuff to do in Lincoln.
- [00:01:45.707]It's just a new place to go on little mini adventures.
- [00:01:52.207]I currently work for the university
- [00:01:54.054]as a recycling coordinator.
- [00:01:55.653]We deal with every aspect of recycling on campus,
- [00:01:58.308]and it has been very influential
- [00:02:00.092]in with practicing my planning curriculum,
- [00:02:03.062]because it truly is a coordinating position.
- [00:02:06.399]You have to deal with all different
- [00:02:07.801]kinds of stakeholders in the community.
- [00:02:09.573]You have to outreach to the community.
- [00:02:11.488]And those concepts relate directly into planning.
- [00:02:14.528]Today we are going to the Huskers spring game,
- [00:02:16.988]which is an exciting event.
- [00:02:17.945]Huskers games are always great.
- [00:02:20.508]We have a thing called "Go Green for Big Red,"
- [00:02:22.900]where we hand out green recycling bags
- [00:02:24.662]to all the tailgaters.
- [00:02:26.085]For like plastics--
- [00:02:27.063]Plastics, aluminium--
- [00:02:28.392]Plastic, glass--
- [00:02:29.225]Yep.
- [00:02:30.058]We'll do that.
- [00:02:30.891]Thank you.
- [00:02:31.724]I feel like this job is making a difference
- [00:02:33.366]because you actually are in the community.
- [00:02:37.297]And you actually see the results of your effort.
- [00:02:40.031]The College of Architecture
- [00:02:40.902]is helping me make a difference in my community.
