- [00:00:00.000]Let's get an update on the latest information from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources
- [00:00:04.996]from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
- [00:00:06.826]Joining us this week is Dr. Ron Yoder, interim Vice Chancellor for the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:12.626]Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and
- [00:00:15.161]Ron congratulations here first of all on your new role.
- [00:00:18.011]Can you tell us a bit about the transition plan now that Ronnie Green is now our new Chancellor?
- [00:00:22.711]Thanks Joe, well as you know Vice Chancellor Green will be the Chancellor of UNL after graduation next Saturday
- [00:00:31.811]and all of us here in IANR are going to miss him but having him over there in the Chancellor's role
- [00:00:38.191]will be very positive for the University certainly and for us here in IANR.
- [00:00:43.231]When he assumes that role as Chancellor then I will take on the interim Vice Chancellor responsibilities here in IANR
- [00:00:50.791]and we will begin a search immediately for the permanent IANR Vice Chancellor
- [00:00:55.896]and the goal is to have that person in place soon after the first of next year
- [00:01:00.542]Alright, very good, now this week also wrapped up the seventh annual Water for Food global conference there in Lincoln
- [00:01:06.712]can you tell us a little bit about this conference and some of your key take-aways?
- [00:01:10.712]Sure, the conference theme this year was catalytic collaborations,
- [00:01:16.547]building public private partnerships for water and food security
- [00:01:20.167]that's a very appropriate theme given that the conferences are organized by the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute
- [00:01:27.437]and that institute is a public private partnership between the Robert B. Daugherty Foundation and the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:36.177]the focus of the conference was the powerful impact you can achieve when you have public and private partnerships
- [00:01:44.236]as they address the challenges of managing water across the world
- [00:01:48.236]providing nutritious and plentiful food to feed that growing world population that we have out there
- [00:01:55.017]and you know Nebraska's become globally recognized as a place that has advanced water management
- [00:02:01.637]so this year the conference attracted more than 350 scholars and policy experts and farmers and ranchers
- [00:02:08.729]and other water experts from around the world.
- [00:02:11.704]the key take-aways for me were how closely linked water and food are to national and regional security
- [00:02:21.014]and many parts of the world and the role that we in Nebraska, given our expertise
- [00:02:25.724]and our experience in managing water, can play in addressing those issues.
- [00:02:29.794]The Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute recently announced a new director.
- [00:02:34.504]Who will take Roberto Lenton's place when he steps down this fall?
- [00:02:37.964]Can you tell us more about the new director?
- [00:02:40.054]Certainly, the new director will be Peter McCormick.
- [00:02:43.724]He is currently the deputy director general for research at the International Water Management Institute in Colombo, Sri Lanka
- [00:02:52.084]and that institution is one of the world's foremost institutions that's dedicated to improving water management and
- [00:02:58.794]land resource management to ensure food security and reduce poverty.
- [00:03:05.014]I think Peter's a really good fit for this position. He was born in Scotland,
- [00:03:08.674]grew up on a livestock and dairy farm there
- [00:03:11.384]and he spent most of his career improving the understanding of sustainable water management around the world.
- [00:03:17.864]He's led research and development programs
- [00:03:20.044]on water, agriculture and environment in Africa and Asia and the Middle East and then here in the US.
- [00:03:26.426]He has a connection to this part of the US.
- [00:03:29.526]He earned his masters and doctorate degrees in agricultural engineering at Colorado State
- [00:03:34.976]and while he was there he did field research in Yuma county.
- [00:03:38.596]So, he understands the plains agriculture and water management.
- [00:03:43.436]He also a licensed professional civil engineer in the state of Colorado
- [00:03:47.626]and a member of the american academy of water resources engineers.
- [00:03:51.206]Well we appreciate your comments this week
- [00:03:53.826]interim Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:03:59.596]That is Dr. Ron Yoder with us on this week's IANR update. I'm Joe Gangwish.
