- [00:00:08.047]My name is Lorin Leifert and I'm a junior
- [00:00:10.447]Communications Studies major at UNL.
- [00:00:12.507]I chose to major in Communications Studies
- [00:00:14.346]because it is very broad.
- [00:00:15.967]There are several career fields you can apply your degree to
- [00:00:18.387]such as business, public relations, advertising.
- [00:00:21.487]And the skills that you are learning
- [00:00:22.686]you can apply to your personal and professional life.
- [00:00:25.407]I'm in my third year so I've taken tons
- [00:00:27.487]of Communications courses,
- [00:00:28.827]but one of my favorite I took last semester
- [00:00:30.687]and that was Interpersonal Communication.
- [00:00:32.627]In Interpersonal Communication
- [00:00:34.287]we learned analyze and apply concepts and theories
- [00:00:36.907]to better develop our communication
- [00:00:38.747]in both professional and personal relationships.
- [00:00:41.807]The most important thing I've learned
- [00:00:43.386]in my Communications Studies courses
- [00:00:45.347]is that it's okay not to be right.
- [00:00:47.407]Communication is a very collaborative environment
- [00:00:50.347]so you learn by sharing your thoughts and opinions
- [00:00:53.330]and hearing other's thoughts and opinions
- [00:00:55.371]which broadens your horizon and opens up
- [00:00:57.531]new ways of thinking and applying your skills.
- [00:01:00.711]The coolest thing about being a
- [00:01:01.871]Communications Studies major is that
- [00:01:03.511]the classes are typically smaller
- [00:01:05.210]so you get to know your classmates better.
- [00:01:07.231]The professors are great about really applying
- [00:01:09.931]the readings to the lecture
- [00:01:11.551]and it's not like they're talking at you
- [00:01:13.451]they're talking to you.
- [00:01:15.151]And the professors create an atmosphere
- [00:01:17.051]that's open and cohesive to discussion.
- [00:01:19.851]I love the availability of the
- [00:01:21.591]Communications Studies faculty.
- [00:01:23.311]They stay true to their office hours
- [00:01:25.111]and they're more than willing to meet with you
- [00:01:26.771]at a time that meets your schedule.
- [00:01:28.811]The advising center is also a great resource.
- [00:01:30.891]They have walk in hours so any quick question you have
- [00:01:34.211]you can pop in there and if they can't answer it
- [00:01:36.431]they know who to point you to to get your question answered.
- [00:01:40.251]I have a major in Psychology so I kinda have
- [00:01:43.790]the how to communicate with people
- [00:01:45.931]and understanding how people communicate
- [00:01:48.131]and with those skills sets
- [00:01:49.711]there are ample job opportunities.
- [00:01:51.551]Something I'm really interested in
- [00:01:52.771]is being a personnel recruiter,
- [00:01:54.311]which involves tons of communication.
- [00:01:56.051]The advice I would give to someone
- [00:01:57.271]considering a Communications Studies major
- [00:01:59.231]would be to meet with an advisor right off the bat.
- [00:02:01.451]They really get to know you and your interest
- [00:02:03.931]and that way they can point you in the right direction.
- [00:02:06.531]And don't be afraid to explore their,
