- [00:00:08.309]I think a student should purse the major
- [00:00:09.932]in communication studies
- [00:00:10.873]because it's going to help explain the world
- [00:00:12.835]and make them a better person
- [00:00:14.510]in their personal, professional and private lives.
- [00:00:17.369]Communication is the number one skill
- [00:00:19.405]that employers look for.
- [00:00:20.888]We're the number two major
- [00:00:22.114]that they're looking for right now.
- [00:00:23.832]We're going to teach them to be critical thinkers,
- [00:00:25.549]better writers, public speakers
- [00:00:27.226]and learn how to advocate.
- [00:00:28.722]We're going to teach them to negotiate conflicts
- [00:00:30.373]in organizational life.
- [00:00:31.967]We're going to help them
- [00:00:32.623]to learn to relate to one another
- [00:00:33.944]to build stronger more meaningful relationships
- [00:00:36.344]and all of that's going to result in a better person
- [00:00:38.635]and a more marketable person
- [00:00:40.352]who's going to really have both the skills
- [00:00:41.786]and the knowledge that employers seek.
- [00:00:44.125]What could me more important
- [00:00:46.153]than becoming a competent
- [00:00:49.182]effective expert in communication?
- [00:00:52.646]It is pervasive in our lives,
- [00:00:55.180]our personal lives,
- [00:00:56.781]our professional lives,
- [00:00:57.726]our civic lives
- [00:00:59.241]and every single career
- [00:01:01.571]requires expertise in communication
- [00:01:04.350]so it's a major that students can pursue
- [00:01:08.239]when they don't know exactly what they want to do
- [00:01:11.497]but they want to make sure
- [00:01:12.761]that they're going to be successful
- [00:01:14.386]in whatever pursuit they choose to follow.
- [00:01:18.326]So what a communication major does
- [00:01:20.699]is give students a set of understandings,
- [00:01:23.183]a set of knowledge
- [00:01:24.552]that they can take and apply in a variety of careers.
- [00:01:27.702]So you have an important set of knowledge and skills
- [00:01:30.889]and then maximum flexibility
- [00:01:32.601]in what you're going to do with that.
- [00:01:34.192]To me, it is the central process.
- [00:01:37.159]That's the thing that's really the most important to us
- [00:01:39.082]in our lives and our relationships.
- [00:01:41.315]It makes us who we are.
- [00:01:42.503]Every job in the workforce requires communication
- [00:01:45.610]and all the courses that you'll take
- [00:01:47.244]in a communication studies degree
- [00:01:49.334]will prepare you to effectively communicate
- [00:01:52.124]with other individuals about different topics
- [00:01:55.643]and these are things that you will learn in any class.
- [00:01:58.608]I think it's a great major for people who
- [00:02:04.367]also might not know what you want to do
- [00:02:06.433]exactly after graduation
- [00:02:07.628]because it just allows you to develop
- [00:02:09.461]and acquire a skill set
- [00:02:11.104]that's extremely marketable
- [00:02:12.569]and super versatile in the job market.
- [00:02:16.389]So I would say whatever it is,
- [00:02:18.313]think about what that issue is for you
- [00:02:20.154]or what that thing is for you
- [00:02:21.297]that you're most passionate about
- [00:02:22.812]that you want to wake up everyday
- [00:02:24.159]and talk about and do
- [00:02:25.585]and connect people and see it grow
- [00:02:27.923]and whatever that is,
- [00:02:29.192]just go full speed ahead
- [00:02:30.417]and know that the skills
- [00:02:32.042]that you learned in the classroom
- [00:02:33.838]are going to be the things that set you aside
- [00:02:35.571]from other people that apply.
- [00:02:38.176]I believe that my communication studies degree
- [00:02:40.680]has helped me stand out from my peers
- [00:02:42.854]and colleagues through my confidence.
- [00:02:45.505]When people hear
- [00:02:47.132]the way that I'm able to communicate
- [00:02:48.689]with all walks of life throughout our company
- [00:02:52.330]and be truly engaged
- [00:02:53.844]and interested in what they have to say,
- [00:02:55.520]I think that that goes beyond any type of skill.
- [00:02:59.618]I think the possibilities
- [00:03:00.638]with a communication studies degree
- [00:03:03.528]is essentially endless.
- [00:03:04.938]One of my most common answers to
- [00:03:07.520]what can I do with a comm major is anything.
- [00:03:12.021]You have options available to you.
- [00:03:14.187]That's the best part about it.
- [00:03:15.535]You're not limited to what you can do.
- [00:03:19.132]It's really interesting to me as I go through my day
- [00:03:22.315]each and every day
- [00:03:23.469]and I look back
- [00:03:24.285]and many of those critical areas
- [00:03:26.129]that I find benefiting me today
- [00:03:28.384]were areas that I learned, studied and benefited from
- [00:03:31.521]as a communication major at UNL.
