- [00:00:00.009](gentle percussion music)
- [00:00:08.020]My name is Trev Alberts.
- [00:00:09.344]I'm the Director of Athletics
- [00:00:10.348]at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
- [00:00:12.323]And I studied communication studies here
- [00:00:15.159]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:18.147]Well I'm in athletics, working in higher education.
- [00:00:22.839]So we work with coaches and student athletes
- [00:00:25.721]as a part of the overall mission
- [00:00:27.001]of the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
- [00:00:30.009]And you know the ability to communicate,
- [00:00:33.509]both obviously non-verbally as in verbal
- [00:00:36.638]in all various forms of communication
- [00:00:38.706]is just absolutely critical.
- [00:00:41.434]You know I use it every single day
- [00:00:44.698]in dealing with our student athletes.
- [00:00:46.406]You know so much is about collaboration,
- [00:00:49.030]bringing people together, building,
- [00:00:52.294]and without effective communication skills
- [00:00:55.282]those things simply aren't possible.
- [00:00:56.986]What I learned here at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln
- [00:00:59.354]and have been able to apply
- [00:01:00.850]in my professional life and career
- [00:01:03.450]has had a very significant parallel
- [00:01:06.182]between my personal and professional growth
- [00:01:08.806]within each organization that I've worked.
- [00:01:11.878]Well the ability to stand out
- [00:01:13.210]amongst your peers and colleagues is actually important
- [00:01:17.747]if you have career aspirations and goals.
- [00:01:19.601]And it's pretty obvious within our department
- [00:01:24.599]that I had the chance to work with,
- [00:01:25.925]as well as my past experience,
- [00:01:28.315]who has the ability to effectively communicate.
- [00:01:31.027]And you know, we have people
- [00:01:34.055]within our department who are very talented people,
- [00:01:37.447]who frankly don't communicate all that well.
- [00:01:41.613]And it's frankly the thing that holds them back
- [00:01:44.510]in terms of vertical growth within the organization.
- [00:01:48.440]Frankly it doesn't really matter what field you're in.
- [00:01:51.681]You can be brilliant, you can have great ideas,
- [00:01:54.329]if you can't effectively communicate them
- [00:01:56.161]orally and written and otherwise,
- [00:01:58.138]you're not gonna be successful.
- [00:01:59.546]So it's certainly served me well.
- [00:02:02.234]And then relating to people
- [00:02:04.046]from all different walks of lives,
- [00:02:05.946]who come to us from across the nation,
- [00:02:08.334]who come from all different socioeconomic backgrounds,
- [00:02:11.322]so being able to bring those three critical areas together
- [00:02:15.039]have proven invaluable to me,
- [00:02:16.842]personally as well as our department
- [00:02:18.954]to help move UNO and athletics forward.
- [00:02:21.980]Well, the advice that I'd give to students
- [00:02:23.556]that are studying communication today is first of all,
- [00:02:26.451]you've made an excellent decision and choice.
- [00:02:28.647]And secondly, I'd encourage them
- [00:02:30.247]to not limit their vision of where
- [00:02:32.147]this education can take them.
- [00:02:34.821]Frankly, it doesn't matter what background you're in.
- [00:02:38.154]Ultimately, where you aspire to go,
- [00:02:40.310]the ability to effectively communicate
- [00:02:42.018]will be critical as you move forward.
- [00:02:44.578]And it's really interesting to me
- [00:02:46.282]as I go through my day each and every day,
- [00:02:48.950]and I look back and many of those critical areas
- [00:02:51.446]that I find benefiting me today
- [00:02:53.834]were areas that I learned, studied,
- [00:02:56.034]and benefited from as a communication major at UNL.
- [00:03:00.690](upbeat instrumental music)
