- [00:00:08.189]My name is Ronald Lee, and I'm a professor
- [00:00:10.182]of Communication Studies
- [00:00:11.418]at the University Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.457]I got interested in studying communication
- [00:00:16.156]because I was a debater in high school
- [00:00:18.289]and I was fairly successful.
- [00:00:20.369]Then, when I went on to college,
- [00:00:22.170]I decided to join the debate team in college.
- [00:00:26.234]I just kind of, I was really interested
- [00:00:28.305]in argumentation and advocacy
- [00:00:30.439]of public policy and so forth.
- [00:00:32.945]It seemed a kind of natural evolution
- [00:00:36.433]that I majored in Communication
- [00:00:38.139]and then went to graduate school in Communication Studies.
- [00:00:41.318]I'm what's called somebody that does work
- [00:00:44.123]in rhetorical studies.
- [00:00:45.809]I work in rhetorical theory and rhetorical criticism.
- [00:00:49.382]My major focus is analysis of American public discourse,
- [00:00:54.427]and specifically American political discourse.
- [00:00:57.083]I teach this course called Com 400,
- [00:01:00.539]which is rhetorical theory,
- [00:01:02.716]which has a kind of daunting title.
- [00:01:05.275]But in this course, we go back
- [00:01:06.854]to the very beginning of theorizing
- [00:01:10.107]and thinking about and teaching rhetoric
- [00:01:12.177]in western culture, which begins in Athens
- [00:01:15.067]in fifth century BCE.
- [00:01:17.094]What do I like about the Department
- [00:01:18.438]of Communication Studies?
- [00:01:19.835]Well, I like my colleagues.
- [00:01:21.222]We have a really nice department.
- [00:01:24.103]Everybody gets along.
- [00:01:25.809]If you know anything about academic life,
- [00:01:27.398]that's not always the case.
- [00:01:29.147]I think we have very productive scholars.
- [00:01:32.134]They do really interesting work.
- [00:01:34.694]They're very collaborative.
- [00:01:36.017]They're interesting to talk to.
- [00:01:38.203]We've recruited a lot of wonderful
- [00:01:41.158]graduate teaching assistants that I've got to work with.
- [00:01:44.423]And I think we have really good,
- [00:01:48.123]interesting, motivated undergraduate majors
- [00:01:51.761]that I enjoy working with.
- [00:01:54.726]Why should a student pursue
- [00:01:56.475]a degree in Communication Studies?
- [00:01:58.502]People that major in Communication Studies
- [00:02:00.902]are also probably double majoring in something else.
- [00:02:04.230]They've got several minors,
- [00:02:06.246]they're doing internships,
- [00:02:08.091]and they're crafting for themselves
- [00:02:10.107]a career projectory.
- [00:02:11.974]Our students go into all kinds of things.
- [00:02:14.737]They go to law school, they go into PR,
- [00:02:17.745]they go into human resources,
- [00:02:20.059]they go work for nonprofits, they go into sales,
- [00:02:23.046]they go into financial services.
- [00:02:25.467]They do things across the spectrum of professions.
- [00:02:29.894]So I think Communication Studies actually
- [00:02:31.963]is a very good way to prepare yourself
- [00:02:35.419]for the world of work.
