- [00:00:08.078]My name is Kayla Simms, and I work now at Aureus Medical
- [00:00:12.734]out in Omaha, Nebraska,
- [00:00:14.894]and I was communication studies major
- [00:00:16.694]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:18.938]I currently work what I would call human resources,
- [00:00:22.470]but I am an account manager and recruiter
- [00:00:25.897]within a health staffing company.
- [00:00:28.220]If someone asked me what I could do
- [00:00:30.153]with a communication studies degree
- [00:00:32.268]I would honestly say that you could do absolutely anything.
- [00:00:36.247]A communication studies degree is so versatile,
- [00:00:39.674]and the fact that you communicate with different people
- [00:00:42.595]within any job, absolutely any position,
- [00:00:45.769]you can always be taught a skill to work with
- [00:00:49.955]in a certain company, but sometimes understanding
- [00:00:52.738]the normal roles of how to communicate with
- [00:00:54.785]different people of different communities,
- [00:00:57.982]inter-cultural communications,
- [00:00:59.753]the difference in business, professional communication
- [00:01:02.697]is something you can definitely learn
- [00:01:05.456]and be advantageous for you.
- [00:01:08.263]What I've learned as a communication studies major
- [00:01:10.954]has really prepared me for work
- [00:01:13.185]in the fact that I am constantly communicating
- [00:01:17.049]with people of different ages, of different cultures.
- [00:01:21.295]I'm constantly learning to really advocate for my employees
- [00:01:25.444]within my hospitals, but also for my clients,
- [00:01:29.032]which are hospitals, and also learning to really negotiate
- [00:01:34.460]different contracts within my company
- [00:01:36.645]and relate to the people that are working around me.
- [00:01:40.394]A lot of time at the office, I'm able to really stand out
- [00:01:43.476]with my communication studies degree
- [00:01:46.213]because we have a lot of presentations
- [00:01:49.088]and times that you will really interact
- [00:01:50.859]with different management, with different positions,
- [00:01:54.815]and by really learning to understand my clientele,
- [00:01:59.208]being able to negotiate different contracts
- [00:02:01.531]has helped me succeed in the business,
- [00:02:04.153]and also being able to really dive into
- [00:02:07.925]different relationships with people
- [00:02:09.720]and make long lasting relationships pretty quickly
- [00:02:12.893]is something that will always benefit me in the office
- [00:02:15.400]and has helped me rise to success today.
- [00:02:18.206]I would advise any communication studies major today
- [00:02:22.415]to really focus on a course load that is
- [00:02:25.014]as diverse as they can possibly imagine.
- [00:02:28.119]Having a diverse course load is the best way
- [00:02:31.316]to fully understand communication studies
- [00:02:34.674]and how it can impact your day to day life
- [00:02:36.951]and have the best chance that you will use this information,
- [00:02:40.608]no matter the career path you choose.
