- [00:00:08.929]My name is Kathy Castle
- [00:00:10.129]and I'm the Director of Undergraduate Education
- [00:00:12.009]and Major Advisor in the Department of Communication Studies
- [00:00:14.749]at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:17.169]I teach a number of classes at UNL
- [00:00:20.112]in Communication Studies.
- [00:00:21.891]I teach Business and Professional Communication,
- [00:00:24.472]I teach Conflict Communication and Negotiation,
- [00:00:28.071]I teach courses in Interpersonal Communication,
- [00:00:30.712]and I'll sometimes teach courses in
- [00:00:32.032]Organizational Communication.
- [00:00:33.931]I became interested in Communication Studies
- [00:00:35.731]as an area of inquiry when I realized the power associated
- [00:00:40.611]with understanding communication.
- [00:00:43.352]When I first began taking communication classes as an
- [00:00:45.891]undergraduate I, like many other undergraduates,
- [00:00:48.751]saw communication as simply a way to state your point,
- [00:00:52.952]and while of course that's one benefit to being a good
- [00:00:55.311]communicator what I soon realized as a student of
- [00:00:58.311]communication studies is that communication is
- [00:01:02.310]really the study of how we come to understand meanings
- [00:01:05.610]and how we create meaning in the way that we
- [00:01:08.210]communicate with other people.
- [00:01:09.690]That was incredibly powerful
- [00:01:11.730]and something that really drew me to this discipline
- [00:01:14.350]because when you think about studying meaning
- [00:01:17.590]and the ways in which we construct meaning with other people
- [00:01:21.210]there's a whole lot of power in that.
- [00:01:23.210]Individual power to make a difference in the world.
- [00:01:26.150]And with that comes responsibility
- [00:01:28.470]and I wanted to know more about how I could
- [00:01:31.770]become a more powerful and responsible citizen.
- [00:01:34.729]My research is focused on chronic illness
- [00:01:37.310]and understanding the experience of chronic illness.
- [00:01:39.710]Specifically, understanding how we construct meaning
- [00:01:43.190]about that experience in our relationships with others.
- [00:01:46.790]I'm really excited about one particular project I'm
- [00:01:49.189]working on right now and that has to do with the study of
- [00:01:52.330]Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
- [00:01:54.830]and the ways in which women with SLE
- [00:01:57.690]come to understand that experience in ways that can be
- [00:02:01.110]more productive and healthy for them
- [00:02:03.210]moving forward in the illness.
- [00:02:05.768]One of the things that I really like about the Department
- [00:02:07.928]of Communication Studies is the overall commitment
- [00:02:10.427]our department has to excellence.
- [00:02:12.507]That's excellence in research, excellence in teaching,
- [00:02:16.168]and an overall excellence in support of one another
- [00:02:18.888]and the students that come to our department to learn.
- [00:02:22.007]Well, the things that I teach in my undergraduate classroom
- [00:02:24.707]are both pragmatic for career success, and I think overall
- [00:02:27.866]help to prepare a student for navigating difficulty
- [00:02:31.676]across content.
- [00:02:33.416]I'm also teaching my students how to understand the power
- [00:02:37.576]of communication, and the overall responsibility that goes
- [00:02:40.435]with understanding how the way you communicate shapes
- [00:02:43.535]your world, and the worlds of those that you interact with.
- [00:02:46.715]So it's this underlying theme of learning how to better
- [00:02:49.916]understand both the power and agency associated with
- [00:02:53.195]communication skills.
- [00:02:55.496]A student should consider communication here at UNL
- [00:02:58.696]for a number of reasons.
- [00:03:00.095]First a major in Communication Studies is a major that
- [00:03:03.436]prepares a student for careers across the board.
- [00:03:06.876]We've had students be successful in a wide variety of
- [00:03:09.736]industries and professional pursuits.
- [00:03:11.815]They should pursue this degree here at UNL because
- [00:03:14.475]we have faculty that are committed to cutting edge research,
- [00:03:17.776]that help prepare our students with the top knowledge
- [00:03:21.316]in the field and in the discipline, and help to prepare
- [00:03:24.116]and care about our students and their overall goals.
- [00:03:26.496]So whether you're pursuing a career path right after college
- [00:03:30.535]or whether you're looking to prepare for graduate school,
- [00:03:32.716]you've got a whole set of faculty members that are there
- [00:03:35.636]willing to prepare and support you in those endeavors.
