- [00:00:08.814]My name is Dr. Jordan Soliz
- [00:00:10.490]and I am an associate professor
- [00:00:12.208]in the department of communication studies.
- [00:00:14.536]I got interested in communication studies
- [00:00:16.271]when I transferred from community college to university
- [00:00:20.004]and I was still trying to find out
- [00:00:21.523]what my major was going to be,
- [00:00:23.611]what I want to do as a career
- [00:00:25.203]and I enrolled in a
- [00:00:27.372]social science research methods course
- [00:00:28.926]in communication
- [00:00:30.320]and it was extremely difficult and extremely challenging
- [00:00:33.141]but I loved it
- [00:00:34.250]and I love the idea that you could actually
- [00:00:36.981]research and ask these questions
- [00:00:39.193]and find answers to these really important social issues
- [00:00:42.300]and that just drew me in
- [00:00:44.276]and I ended up taking more courses
- [00:00:45.813]and that became my major.
- [00:00:47.426]Generally speaking,
- [00:00:48.105]my research looks at communication identity,
- [00:00:51.616]how our family, our peers, the media
- [00:00:54.593]influence who we are
- [00:00:56.238]and in turn how who we are influences
- [00:00:58.793]how we interact with others,
- [00:00:59.842]our perceptions of others,
- [00:01:00.938]our perceptions of the world.
- [00:01:03.607]I do a lot of this research
- [00:01:05.080]looking at the family
- [00:01:06.294]and specifically looking at identity
- [00:01:08.272]and difference in the family
- [00:01:09.828]and so I investigate and I look into how
- [00:01:13.960]we manage these differences in families
- [00:01:15.758]and how they affect our relationships, our identity.
- [00:01:18.553]I also look at family socialization
- [00:01:20.658]especially with ethnic racial minorities.
- [00:01:22.704]For example, how they socialize individuals
- [00:01:25.575]to deal with discrimination and prejudice.
- [00:01:28.884]On the undergraduate level,
- [00:01:30.235]I primarily teach three courses.
- [00:01:32.363]I teach a course on communication and social identity,
- [00:01:35.511]a course on communication aging
- [00:01:37.380]and then I also teach
- [00:01:38.541]the introduction to research methods.
- [00:01:40.711]When I'm designing assignments for my students,
- [00:01:43.662]I really think about the pragmatic benefits,
- [00:01:45.779]how they can use this outside the classroom
- [00:01:47.592]so for instance,
- [00:01:49.638]in a lot of my courses,
- [00:01:50.548]I'll introduce a service learning component
- [00:01:52.401]where they work with a community organization
- [00:01:54.396]or agency.
- [00:01:55.827]Another assignment,
- [00:01:56.776]the one that's my favorite right now
- [00:01:58.330]is what I call the creative application assignment.
- [00:02:01.720]It's in my social identity and communication course
- [00:02:04.395]and in this course,
- [00:02:05.771]students are looking at a variety
- [00:02:08.056]of really salient social issues
- [00:02:10.476]oftentimes dealing with social inequality or prejudice.
- [00:02:14.341]But rather than just having them present a paper
- [00:02:17.021]or present something at the end of the semester
- [00:02:19.228]to compliment their paper,
- [00:02:20.574]I have them think of some type of artifact.
- [00:02:23.357]It can be a video, a poster,
- [00:02:26.473]one person's even wrote a song
- [00:02:28.264]where they can take their ideas
- [00:02:30.813]that came in their papers to educate,
- [00:02:32.566]inform or persuade others.
- [00:02:35.265]I think students should consider
- [00:02:37.758]majoring in communication studies at UNL
- [00:02:40.785]because we do a nice balance
- [00:02:42.463]preparing students both
- [00:02:43.688]for their professional lives and their personal lives.
- [00:02:46.061]When you talk to our instructors,
- [00:02:47.534]when you talk to our students,
- [00:02:50.908]you'll often hear this theme
- [00:02:52.110]and it's very purposeful
- [00:02:53.337]that we want to
- [00:02:56.278]not only have people understand
- [00:02:57.259]the skills for the workplace
- [00:02:59.121]and how they can develop those skills
- [00:03:01.312]whether we're talking about public speaking,
- [00:03:03.228]persuasive speaking, working with small groups
- [00:03:05.773]but also skills for their everyday lives.
- [00:03:07.455]There's things that are really
- [00:03:08.300]going to bring you happiness.
- [00:03:09.863]When people are considering a major,
- [00:03:12.743]I think one of the benefits of our department,
- [00:03:14.460]why people should consider communication studies
- [00:03:17.411]is the faculty.
- [00:03:19.904]I have an incredible group of colleagues
- [00:03:21.540]that are great researchers, great scholars.
- [00:03:23.422]They're also incredible teachers.
- [00:03:25.457]They're incredibly student centered
- [00:03:26.987]and they're also very innovative
- [00:03:28.682]and so I think when students
- [00:03:29.965]come to our department and take our courses,
- [00:03:32.587]they're not only learning
- [00:03:34.604]about concepts and ideas and theories
- [00:03:36.559]that can apply to their professional lives,
- [00:03:38.367]their personal lives
- [00:03:39.638]but they're going to be doing it in a way
- [00:03:40.882]that's incredibly engaging
- [00:03:42.324]and it's just going to make a great experience for them.
