- [00:00:07.960]My name's Jonathan Baker, and I'm
- [00:00:09.604]a communication studies major at
- [00:00:11.374]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.881]I decided to major in communication studies,
- [00:00:16.133]because I'm very interested in how people communicate
- [00:00:19.758]about their identities and how people's identities
- [00:00:23.471]impact different aspects of their lives.
- [00:00:26.010]I'm on the University Speech and Debate Team, and through
- [00:00:28.271]this activity I get to work with Professor Duncan, and this
- [00:00:32.699]has been a great experience for me as
- [00:00:34.656]a communication studies major,
- [00:00:36.256]because he taught me a lot of theories
- [00:00:39.096]before I even took some of the upper level classes,
- [00:00:42.627]so when I did get to the upper level classes in the degree,
- [00:00:46.591]I already had an experience with
- [00:00:48.507]some of the more difficult theories.
- [00:00:50.650]As a communication studies major,
- [00:00:52.176]I have taken a wide variety of classes
- [00:00:54.894]from different disciplines within the study.
- [00:00:58.367]So I've taken rhetoric classes,
- [00:01:00.119]interpersonal classes, as well as
- [00:01:01.986]organizational classes.
- [00:01:03.405]The coolest thing about being a communication studies major
- [00:01:06.050]is that in every class that I've taken,
- [00:01:08.237]I've gotten to talk about pop culture,
- [00:01:11.476]because pop culture permeates human communication,
- [00:01:15.109]especially nowadays, and so, in every class that I've taken
- [00:01:18.747]we've been able to discuss different phenomenons
- [00:01:20.837]that are occurring in popular culture, and how
- [00:01:23.866]that affects us, both rhetorically and interpersonally.
- [00:01:27.815]With my communication studies degree,
- [00:01:29.520]I plan to go to grad school and research
- [00:01:31.408]health communication.
- [00:01:33.537]Specifically, I wanna research health communication
- [00:01:36.643]with the lens of LGBTQ individuals,
- [00:01:39.276]as well as women's issues.
- [00:01:41.242]The most important thing that I've learned
- [00:01:42.853]from my communication studies classes is that,
- [00:01:45.104]as cliche as it sounds, everyone
- [00:01:47.086]communicates, and understanding how individuals
- [00:01:50.197]communicate with one another is very important
- [00:01:52.631]to understand power dynamics and power structures
- [00:01:55.600]that are within society.
- [00:01:57.274]Every job in the workforce requires communication, and all
- [00:02:00.677]the courses that you'll take in
- [00:02:02.236]a communication studies degree will prepare you
- [00:02:05.125]to effectively communicate with other individuals
- [00:02:07.888]about different topics, and these are things
- [00:02:11.576]that you will learn in any class.
