- [00:00:08.183]Hi, my name is Jody Koenig Kellas,
- [00:00:10.101]and I teach and conduct research in
- [00:00:12.744]the Department of Communication Studies at
- [00:00:14.500]the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
- [00:00:16.787]I got interested in communication
- [00:00:18.867]as an area of inquiry as an undergraduate.
- [00:00:21.739]So, like most people who become
- [00:00:24.083]communication studies majors, I think,
- [00:00:26.824]I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, and I had
- [00:00:29.946]that moment where I was taking
- [00:00:31.181]a communications studies class, and all of a sudden
- [00:00:34.093]it all came together, and I had that aha moment,
- [00:00:36.877]like these are my people.
- [00:00:38.328]This is what I think about.
- [00:00:39.789]This is what I'm interested in, and it made
- [00:00:42.207]sense to me, and it mattered to, not only my everyday life,
- [00:00:47.395]but my professional pursuits, my family relationships, and I
- [00:00:51.336]just really, it clicked for me.
- [00:00:53.501]I got it.
- [00:00:54.344]In my research I focus on the ways in which people
- [00:00:56.969]communicate to make sense of difficulty and relationships.
- [00:01:01.675]In particular, most of my research focuses
- [00:01:03.869]on narratives in story telling, and the ways in which
- [00:01:08.067]the content and processes of story telling
- [00:01:12.020]translate into well being for families and individuals.
- [00:01:18.221]At UNL I teach classes at the undergraduate level
- [00:01:22.369]on interpersonal communication, the dark side
- [00:01:25.227]of interpersonal communication, and health communication.
- [00:01:29.261]I like so many things about the Department
- [00:01:31.213]of Communication Studies, but one of the things
- [00:01:34.376]that I really like, the way I would describe
- [00:01:36.227]this Department is that it is rigorous academically,
- [00:01:41.613]with a family feel.
- [00:01:43.203]We really care about getting to know our students,
- [00:01:46.514]both at the undergraduate and the graduate
- [00:01:48.173]level, and so it's a place that feels warm,
- [00:01:52.706]while at the same time challenging.
- [00:01:55.341]At the foundation of what I teach at
- [00:01:57.047]the undergraduate level is the philosophy that
- [00:01:59.736]the quality of our communication is linked
- [00:02:01.464]to the quality of our lives.
- [00:02:03.008]That philosophy, along with some other central concepts,
- [00:02:07.277]including the idea of what I call communicative
- [00:02:09.261]perspective taking, in other words, not only
- [00:02:12.093]the ability to take somebody else's perspective,
- [00:02:14.528]but the ability to communicate that you
- [00:02:16.451]take someone's perspective, is essential to any career.
- [00:02:20.522]It is a foundational level to success,
- [00:02:23.418]because people who can communicate
- [00:02:25.283]confidently and effectively and do so
- [00:02:27.629]in a way that makes other people feel
- [00:02:29.389]understood and valued are the kind of employees
- [00:02:33.352]that employers and colleagues want to have around.
- [00:02:37.124]People who master those principles
- [00:02:40.754]in college will excel in their professional life.
- [00:02:45.277]What could be more important than
- [00:02:48.577]becoming a competent, effective expert in communication.
- [00:02:53.959]It is pervasive in our lives, our personal lives,
- [00:02:58.056]our professional lives, our civic lives, and every single
- [00:03:01.980]career requires expertise in communication.
- [00:03:05.598]So, it's a major that students can pursue
- [00:03:09.660]when they don't know exactly what they wanna do,
- [00:03:12.614]but they want to make sure that they are
- [00:03:14.436]going to be successful in whatever pursuit
- [00:03:17.276]they choose to follow.
