- [00:00:08.506]My name is Geoffrey Ledbetter,
- [00:00:09.811]and I'm a Communications Studies major
- [00:00:11.442]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.676]I decided to major in Communications Studies,
- [00:00:15.516]because humans and the different ways
- [00:00:17.892]they interact fascinate me.
- [00:00:19.819]I originally started out as a Psychology major,
- [00:00:22.801]but I later found out that the best way
- [00:00:24.362]to really study humans and human interaction
- [00:00:26.497]was through Communication Studies.
- [00:00:28.520]I've taken all sorts of classes
- [00:00:29.742]as a Communication Studies major.
- [00:00:31.438]I've looked at both the social science aspect
- [00:00:33.859]of Communication Studies, which includes things like
- [00:00:35.985]intergroup communication, intercultural communication,
- [00:00:38.799]non-verbal communication, and things like that.
- [00:00:41.224]But also the humanities of Communication Studies,
- [00:00:45.715]which include things like visual communication,
- [00:00:48.116]theories of persuasion, argumentation, stuff like that.
- [00:00:51.851]I've learned all sort of things in my time
- [00:00:54.379]as a Communication Studies major at UNL.
- [00:00:58.029]I've learned how to argue effectively,
- [00:00:59.946]how to persuade people, but I've also learned
- [00:01:01.956]about the different ways that humans interact
- [00:01:04.791]and the different ways how sometimes we interact
- [00:01:07.853]according to our specific social identity
- [00:01:10.786]as, say, a student when I'm interacting with a professor.
- [00:01:14.665]Or, as a son when I'm talking to my parents.
- [00:01:18.319]From my courses at UNL, I haven't just learned facts.
- [00:01:22.362]I've also gained a new perspective on how
- [00:01:25.032]to analyze messages that are given to me.
- [00:01:27.424]And I think that's been one of the most important things
- [00:01:29.646]in Communication Studies is, discovering this new way
- [00:01:33.852]of looking at messages and analyzing them critically.
- [00:01:37.879]Immediately after I graduate, I plan on traveling.
- [00:01:40.782]I'm currently looking into a program
- [00:01:42.262]where I'll be able to teach English in France.
- [00:01:44.895]However, after that, I've looked into some different things,
- [00:01:47.144]including such things as public relations
- [00:01:49.646]and possibly going on to get a doctorate
- [00:01:51.963]and teaching Communication Studies.
- [00:01:54.073]Working with Communication Studies faculty
- [00:01:55.894]is just a blast.
- [00:01:58.042]They're friendly.
- [00:01:58.892]They're helpful.
- [00:01:59.686]And they're always there for you.
- [00:02:01.873]It's a great time.
- [00:02:04.090]One of the coolest things
- [00:02:05.005]about being a Communication Studies major is that
- [00:02:07.323]everyone else in the Communication Studies Department
- [00:02:09.746]are sort of, they're people people, if you will.
- [00:02:14.383]And they're all friendly,
- [00:02:15.410]and they're all really easy to get along with,
- [00:02:17.427]and you make a lot of friends
- [00:02:18.407]as a Communication Studies major.
- [00:02:20.323]My advice to someone considering majoring
- [00:02:22.367]in Communication Studies is, do it.
- [00:02:24.536]You won't regret it at all.
