- [00:00:07.790]Greetings, my name Dawn O. Braithwaite
- [00:00:10.369]and I am the Willa Cather Professor and Department Chair
- [00:00:13.310]of the Department of Communication Studies.
- [00:00:15.513]I'm a relationship and family communication researcher
- [00:00:19.230]so I'm very interested in the role of communication
- [00:00:21.660]in forming relationships in families
- [00:00:23.880]and helping them to be successful.
- [00:00:26.300]One research project I'm really excited about
- [00:00:28.640]is a set of data that we're collecting right now
- [00:00:31.060]on positive step-family relationships.
- [00:00:34.660]We're interviewing people 25 and over
- [00:00:37.240]who have developed an overall positive
- [00:00:39.340]relationship with a step-parent.
- [00:00:41.000]So we want to understand how
- [00:00:42.940]these relationships become positive
- [00:00:45.360]and the role of communication in helping
- [00:00:47.260]these relationships to become positive over the years.
- [00:00:50.020]At the undergraduate level I teach
- [00:00:51.940]courses in family communication,
- [00:00:53.760]interpersonal communication,
- [00:00:55.600]and small group and team communication.
- [00:00:57.760]I've loved being here at the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:00.300]and I've been here since 1998.
- [00:01:02.540]I like it because it's wonderful university
- [00:01:05.840]and the department is a close community
- [00:01:07.860]with a set of faculty who care about one another,
- [00:01:10.620]who are very professional and productive.
- [00:01:12.960]They care deeply about their teaching
- [00:01:15.040]and we have a very good relationship
- [00:01:17.121]with our undergraduate students and our graduate students.
- [00:01:19.780]It's been an absolutely wonderful place to work.
- [00:01:22.540]Communication Studies is a major that's important
- [00:01:25.160]because we teach students about advocating,
- [00:01:27.460]negotiating and relating in a variety of context.
- [00:01:31.280]But we also understand that communication
- [00:01:33.720]is important to anything we do in the world
- [00:01:35.840]in any career.
- [00:01:37.300]So what a Communication Major does
- [00:01:39.361]is give students a set of understandings,
- [00:01:41.360]a set of knowledge that they can take
- [00:01:43.900]and apply in a variety of careers.
- [00:01:46.280]So you have an important set of knowledge and skills
- [00:01:49.300]and then maximum flexibility
- [00:01:51.180]in what you want to do with that.
- [00:01:52.861]To me it is the central process,
- [00:01:55.600]it's the thing that's really most important
- [00:01:57.300]to us in our lives and our relationships.
- [00:01:59.700]It makes us who we are.
- [00:02:01.341]I hope that you'll come and visit
- [00:02:03.060]the Communications Studies Department
- [00:02:05.180]on the fourth floor of OldFather Hall,
- [00:02:07.300]that we'll see you in our classes
- [00:02:09.180]and that you'll come and be a part of our community.
