- [00:00:09.066]I'm a senior Communication Studies major
- [00:00:11.274]at the Univeristy of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- [00:00:13.638]I came to Communication Studies,
- [00:00:15.604]because I wanted to pay attention
- [00:00:17.959]to how people interacted with one another,
- [00:00:19.691]the messages that they send back and forth,
- [00:00:22.005]while having a major that gave me the space
- [00:00:25.636]to further look at my other interests
- [00:00:27.693]and what I want to do after graduation.
- [00:00:29.937]So, the kind of classes I've taken
- [00:00:31.115]as a Communication Studies major
- [00:00:32.812]have been varied, I would say.
- [00:00:34.885]I've taken classes from Communication and Aging
- [00:00:37.822]to an organizational communication course I'm in right now.
- [00:00:42.381]It's definitely been all over the place, but I liked that,
- [00:00:44.776]because I've been able to gather a lot of information
- [00:00:47.203]about a variety of topics,
- [00:00:49.800]and started to feel confident about applying them
- [00:00:53.480]in a variety of settings.
- [00:00:54.824]I feel, overall, the most important thing
- [00:00:56.308]that I've learned in my Communication Studies courses
- [00:00:59.417]is how to be more empathetic with others.
- [00:01:03.514]I think that because I've been able to dabble
- [00:01:05.200]in learning about a lot of different things
- [00:01:08.146]related to communication, I can better understand
- [00:01:11.980]other people, whether they're similar or different to me.
- [00:01:15.917]And I've just been able to have a deeper understanding
- [00:01:18.630]about how to engage with others
- [00:01:20.036]and how others engage with others.
- [00:01:23.532]It's been great to work
- [00:01:24.248]with the Communication Studies faculty.
- [00:01:26.633]The professors are very passionate
- [00:01:28.271]about what they're teaching us.
- [00:01:30.420]And I think that there's nobody better you could learn from.
- [00:01:33.091]I think what's really cool about being
- [00:01:34.651]a Communication Studies major
- [00:01:36.253]is that this major allows you to explore other outlets
- [00:01:40.154]at the university as well.
- [00:01:41.891]I have friends and people in my classes
- [00:01:44.085]who study a variety of different things.
- [00:01:46.842]For me, I also have a minor
- [00:01:48.568]in Leadership and Communications.
- [00:01:50.640]I have a lot of friends
- [00:01:52.176]who also have, like, Psychology minors.
- [00:01:54.428]I know there's a girl who's Pre-OT
- [00:01:56.141]with a Communication Studies major.
- [00:01:57.784]So, it's extremely applicable.
- [00:02:00.296]With my Communication Studies degree,
- [00:02:01.767]I'm planning on going to graduate school.
- [00:02:05.137]I am currently in the process of applying
- [00:02:07.413]for Higher Education Student Affairs programs,
- [00:02:10.928]and I found that Communication Studies
- [00:02:13.250]has prepared me well, I feel, for that.
- [00:02:16.038]I've also considered working in non-profits down the road.
- [00:02:20.369]And I feel that Communication Studies would also
- [00:02:22.847]allow me to enter into that atmosphere well.
- [00:02:26.211]The advice I would give to someone
- [00:02:27.998]considering Communication Studies would just be,
- [00:02:32.060]take some time to think about
- [00:02:33.007]what you see yourself doing after graduation.
- [00:02:36.393]And if it's people-related,
- [00:02:40.734]and if you're just really interested in understanding
- [00:02:42.614]how people think and function and interact with one another,
- [00:02:46.569]I think that Communication Studies would be great.
- [00:02:48.797]I think it's a great major for people
- [00:02:51.647]who also might not know
- [00:02:53.737]what you want to do exactly after graduation,
- [00:02:55.626]'cause it just allows you to develop and acquire a skill set
- [00:02:59.007]that's extremely marketable
- [00:03:00.475]and super versatile in the job market.
