- [00:00:08.020]My name is Caleb Bailey,
- [00:00:09.728]and I got my undergraduate degree
- [00:00:11.219]in Communication Studies here at UNL, 2010,
- [00:00:14.789]and currently, I am the executive director
- [00:00:16.549]for their Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra.
- [00:00:19.309]Every day, I have to advocate for our organization
- [00:00:21.917]because I'm the executive director,
- [00:00:23.877]so I work with the media,
- [00:00:25.397]I work with the union representatives,
- [00:00:27.179]I work with the musicians,
- [00:00:28.968]and I work with my office staff, as well.
- [00:00:31.477]So every day, I am communicating that image
- [00:00:34.437]of the brand of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra,
- [00:00:37.797]and every single day, I might meet new people
- [00:00:40.469]who have never even heard about us,
- [00:00:42.088]so I'm always in the position to explain to them
- [00:00:44.899]both about our organization, but then also about
- [00:00:47.688]something that I'm very passionate about,
- [00:00:49.269]which is orchestral music.
- [00:00:50.837]So I'm advocating on the micro-level
- [00:00:53.317]of "This is who we are
- [00:00:54.717]and what we do in Eastern Connecticut."
- [00:00:56.837]But then on the broader scale, I'm also advocating
- [00:00:58.899]for "Here's what classical music is,
- [00:01:00.917]and here's what it can do for you,
- [00:01:02.637]and here's why I think it's really important
- [00:01:04.288]and why I'm passionate about it."
- [00:01:06.477]My education has helped me stand out because,
- [00:01:08.909]while there are many people who have technical knowledge
- [00:01:12.259]about music and have classical degrees,
- [00:01:15.789]they need someone to work within the organization
- [00:01:18.429]who can talk to the people
- [00:01:20.037]and who can kind of put all the pieces together
- [00:01:22.288]in a dynamic way that makes the community excel.
- [00:01:26.349]And so for me, that communications toolbox
- [00:01:29.389]was the unique thing,
- [00:01:31.189]and if you have a Communication Studies degree,
- [00:01:33.259]you're set up for success in that way.
- [00:01:35.237]What I learned through the Communication Studies degree
- [00:01:38.077]has been so helpful in preparing me in entering the world
- [00:01:41.717]that I'm now in, which is non-profit orchestras.
- [00:01:44.888]I have tied in everything
- [00:01:46.659]from communication accommodation theory
- [00:01:48.797]and relating to different kinds of people,
- [00:01:50.939]also to just analyzing rhetoric
- [00:01:52.789]and what my final senior project was,
- [00:01:55.229]in understanding advertising messages on a different level.
- [00:01:58.869]And so for me, I've tied in everything
- [00:02:00.440]from the very theoretical into just the nuts and bolts
- [00:02:03.131]of learning how to write a really well-crafted email,
- [00:02:06.640]and that serves me every single day
- [00:02:08.400]in all the tasks that I do.
- [00:02:10.411]I would say one of the most important things that you can do
- [00:02:13.200]when you're graduating with a Communication Studies degree
- [00:02:15.899]is to really think intently about what it is
- [00:02:18.059]that you've learned in your classes
- [00:02:20.459]and what it is that you're prepared to do for our world.
- [00:02:24.589]And I think that the most important thing you can do
- [00:02:27.011]is identifying what it is that you're passionate about.
- [00:02:29.411]As you have a Communication Studies degree,
- [00:02:31.891]you can basically do anything because,
- [00:02:33.891]for me, I didn't have a music degree,
- [00:02:35.979]and I didn't know all the ins and outs
- [00:02:37.931]of the classical music world,
- [00:02:39.760]but I did know that I was intentionally
- [00:02:41.211]very passionate about music,
- [00:02:43.200]and I wanted to find a position where I could help
- [00:02:45.491]be the person that connects the dots of a community
- [00:02:48.389]around this one issue.
- [00:02:50.259]So I would say, whatever it is,
- [00:02:52.179]think about what that issue is for you
- [00:02:53.899]or what that thing is for you
- [00:02:55.211]that you're most passionate about
- [00:02:56.709]that you want to wake up every day and talk about
- [00:02:58.811]and do and connect people and see it grow,
- [00:03:01.771]and whatever that is, just go full-speed ahead
- [00:03:04.280]and know that the skills that you learned in the classroom
- [00:03:07.309]are going to be the things that set you aside
- [00:03:09.509]from other people that apply.
