- [00:00:08.510]I'm Professor Bill Seiler, and I'm in the
- [00:00:10.654]Department of Communication Studies,
- [00:00:12.852]and I teach a variety of courses
- [00:00:14.921]at the undergraduate and graduate level.
- [00:00:17.758]On the undergraduate side, I've taught interviewing,
- [00:00:20.841]research methods, business and professional communication,
- [00:00:23.764]public speaking, small group communication,
- [00:00:26.324]and the intro to communication,
- [00:00:28.596]or the fundamentals of human communication.
- [00:00:30.921]My favorite assignment was just developed
- [00:00:33.406]about four or five years ago, that I truly love.
- [00:00:36.916]It's having student develop their own info commercial,
- [00:00:39.796]and it's really kind of fun.
- [00:00:41.854]I show them a info commercial as an example
- [00:00:46.804]of what I'm looking for, and I'm trying to get them to learn
- [00:00:49.470]to create a persuasive message in which they create
- [00:00:54.516]this info commercial.
- [00:00:55.764]They don't actually videotape it.
- [00:00:57.278]They perform it in class, and we have a system
- [00:01:01.545]where they're divided into various groups
- [00:01:04.308]and then each presents their info commercial
- [00:01:07.401]and then the class decides which one was the best one,
- [00:01:10.185]and then I kind of give them quasi-extra credit points.
- [00:01:13.737]And the students really seem to dig
- [00:01:15.710]that particular assignment because they get involved.
- [00:01:19.497]And every student has to be a participant
- [00:01:21.652]in part of that info commercial.
- [00:01:23.998]My research has been really eclectic over the years.
- [00:01:26.558]I started out doing a lot of research with
- [00:01:29.044]communication as it impacts people,
- [00:01:33.801]in terms of the visual aspects of communication.
- [00:01:36.446]I was particularly interested in my doctoral dissertation
- [00:01:39.540]as to how people absorb visual materials
- [00:01:43.508]and how they find themselves being influenced
- [00:01:47.401]by the communication that's given off by
- [00:01:49.982]various types of communication.
- [00:01:52.212]Well I've been working with Richard Murphy,
- [00:01:54.281]one of my graduate students who recently graduated,
- [00:01:57.044]and his dissertation was dealing with
- [00:01:59.593]military personnel when they come back out of combat.
- [00:02:03.316]We've been working on a research project that investigates
- [00:02:07.518]how military people, after coming out of combat zones,
- [00:02:11.188]adapt to college life.
- [00:02:12.990]And so we've been looking at that
- [00:02:14.686]particular kind of research.
- [00:02:16.244]I've also done a piece of research
- [00:02:18.292]that has to do with health communication, and in particular,
- [00:02:21.566]how the internet influences people's decisions,
- [00:02:24.948]and how they learn about the diseases or illness
- [00:02:29.502]that they have through the internet, and how they
- [00:02:31.454]communicate that with their medical professional.
- [00:02:34.494]I try to hire people that think of a department
- [00:02:39.348]as more than just a place to work, but as a home.
- [00:02:43.668]And I tried to create a family environment to some degree,
- [00:02:47.198]as best one can possibly do in a professional setting,
- [00:02:50.473]by making sure that people understood the roles
- [00:02:54.441]that they had in the department, and in fact
- [00:02:57.140]the thing that I enjoy most about the department is that
- [00:02:59.966]people really care about each other.
- [00:03:01.940]Oh the nice advantage about communication is
- [00:03:05.054]it provides a liberal arts education that
- [00:03:09.076]a lot of areas where you're going into a professional field
- [00:03:12.020]require communication as part of their background
- [00:03:15.060]or at least look for it.
- [00:03:16.660]Over the years I've talked to a lot of different employers
- [00:03:19.476]in the city of Lincoln and throughout the country,
- [00:03:22.217]and almost all of them say they look for people
- [00:03:24.958]who are intelligent, can communicate effectively,
- [00:03:28.649]and are people that are willing to learn
- [00:03:31.828]and try new ideas.
- [00:03:33.289]And I think communications studies majors really
- [00:03:35.518]fall into that category.
