- [00:00:08.443]Hi, I'm Angela Palmer-Wackerly
- [00:00:10.630]and I'm an Assistant Professor of Health Communication
- [00:00:13.456]in the Department of Communication Studies at UNL.
- [00:00:16.912]I became interested in communication studies
- [00:00:19.697]when I was a journalist.
- [00:00:21.265]I thought journalism was the communication field
- [00:00:24.411]and until I entered my masters program
- [00:00:26.747]I had no idea all the different types
- [00:00:29.393]of communication that existed for study.
- [00:00:32.112]When I entered my graduate program,
- [00:00:34.512]I became exposed to interpersonal communication,
- [00:00:37.211]health communication, intergroup communication,
- [00:00:39.856]and I just loved the mixture of all three of those.
- [00:00:42.940]And I realized I will never be bored
- [00:00:45.318]if I study this the rest of my life,
- [00:00:47.067]and so I decided to.
- [00:00:50.256]So, my research can broadly be conceptualized
- [00:00:54.054]as community engagement research.
- [00:00:56.518]I really focus on working with communities
- [00:00:59.505]that are either underserved in some way,
- [00:01:02.108]so it could be that they don't have healthcare access,
- [00:01:05.095]but it could also be that their particular illness condition
- [00:01:09.272]just doesn't get a lot of publicity or a lot of exposure.
- [00:01:14.447]At the undergraduate level, I teach health communication,
- [00:01:18.585]which is a broad seminar, and it introduces students
- [00:01:22.384]to the many different types of health communication.
- [00:01:25.476]I also teach communication in health disparities,
- [00:01:29.125]which is really looking at unequal access,
- [00:01:33.317]and how we can use communication to improve that.
- [00:01:36.826]One of the things I love to do in my classes,
- [00:01:39.492]is really expose students to what
- [00:01:41.776]their fellow students are studying.
- [00:01:44.143]I teach health communication, and so it really
- [00:01:47.216]attracts a broad array of students
- [00:01:49.146]from across the university.
- [00:01:51.357]I try to work in as many group activities as I can
- [00:01:54.187]so that they can see how widely communication is applicable
- [00:01:57.600]no matter what your career track is.
- [00:01:59.937]And then we try to challenge each other
- [00:02:02.050]from these different disciplines
- [00:02:03.820]so that they can really gain a deeper knowledge
- [00:02:06.049]of communication, but then also a deeper respect for it.
- [00:02:09.057]I think students here at UNL could benefit
- [00:02:11.468]from a major in communication because they are able
- [00:02:15.158]to apply it to any career field that they're interested in.
- [00:02:18.112]This could be if it's a pre-health field,
- [00:02:20.022]such as wanting to be a physician, wanting to be a nurse.
- [00:02:23.244]But this could also be wanting to be in business.
- [00:02:25.953]This could also be wanting to be an archaeologist.
- [00:02:29.121]I think it can really apply in terms of just
- [00:02:32.374]learning how to take information and communicate
- [00:02:35.435]it more effectively to your audience.
- [00:02:38.992](soft upbeat music)
