- [00:00:17.227]I studied Communication Studies.
- [00:00:18.923]Communication Studies.
- [00:00:20.053]And I was a Communication Studies major
- [00:00:21.984]at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
- [00:00:23.813]The University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
- [00:00:25.413]And I have my Communication Studies undergraduate degree
- [00:00:27.944]from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
- [00:00:29.925]And I'm in the human resources field
- [00:00:31.837]with CHI Health.
- [00:00:33.187]I am an account manager and recruiter.
- [00:00:35.965]I'm the Director of Athletics
- [00:00:37.245]at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
- [00:00:39.037]And currently I am the Executive Director
- [00:00:40.707]for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra.
- [00:00:43.008]And I'm the 3L at Boston College Law
- [00:00:44.779]studying family law.
- [00:00:45.837]I currently work in the staffing
- [00:00:47.667]and recruiting industry
- [00:00:48.928]in the Talent and Development department.
- [00:00:51.408]So essentially what that means is
- [00:00:53.587]when new trainees come into our organization,
- [00:00:57.085]I train them,
- [00:00:58.488]coach them,
- [00:00:59.368]mentor them
- [00:01:00.201]to get them ramped up
- [00:01:01.339]so they can be successful
- [00:01:03.005]sales and recruiting people on their teams.
- [00:01:06.696]I think that the Communications Studies major
- [00:01:10.205]has given me the confidence
- [00:01:12.115]to voice my opinion
- [00:01:14.256]in the business world.
- [00:01:15.387]Within the human resources field,
- [00:01:16.827]public advocacy is one
- [00:01:18.085]of the major emphases.
- [00:01:19.485]My education as a Communication Studies major
- [00:01:22.488]has helped me stand out
- [00:01:23.477]in the sense that I was able
- [00:01:25.277]to noticeably set myself apart
- [00:01:29.048]by communicating the work experience that I've had,
- [00:01:32.259]and the just overall life experience
- [00:01:34.680]and my knowledge in order to get
- [00:01:36.488]into the human resources field
- [00:01:39.080]without an official Human Resources title
- [00:01:42.859]within my work history.
- [00:01:43.968]So we work with coaches
- [00:01:45.208]and student athletes as a part
- [00:01:47.109]of the overall mission
- [00:01:48.440]of the University of Nebraska in Omaha.
- [00:01:50.739]What I learned here
- [00:01:51.779]at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln
- [00:01:53.579]and have been able to apply
- [00:01:54.789]in my professional life and career,
- [00:01:56.789]has had a very significant parallel
- [00:02:00.008]between my personal and professional growth
- [00:02:02.539]within each organization that I've worked.
- [00:02:05.179]Every day I have to advocate
- [00:02:06.509]for our organization
- [00:02:07.859]because I'm the Executive Director.
- [00:02:09.739]So I work with the media,
- [00:02:11.299]I with the union representatives,
- [00:02:13.080]I work with the musicians,
- [00:02:14.859]and I work with my office staff as well.
- [00:02:17.339]So every day I am communicating
- [00:02:19.728]that image of the brand
- [00:02:21.320]of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra,
- [00:02:23.648]and every single day I might meet
- [00:02:25.680]new people who have never even
- [00:02:27.029]heard about us.
- [00:02:27.939]So I'm always in the position
- [00:02:29.288]to explain to them,
- [00:02:30.859]both about our organization
- [00:02:32.739]but then also about something
- [00:02:34.179]that I'm very passionate about,
- [00:02:35.288]which is orchestral music.
- [00:02:36.520]What I learned through the Communication Studies degree
- [00:02:39.539]has been so helpful in preparing me
- [00:02:42.240]in entering the world that I'm now in,
- [00:02:44.259]which is nonprofit orchestras.
- [00:02:46.216]I advocate,
- [00:02:47.049]negotiate,
- [00:02:47.882]and relate every single day
- [00:02:49.197]as a family law attorney.
- [00:02:51.125]I advocate for clients who are low-income,
- [00:02:54.016]who are survivors of domestic violence,
- [00:02:56.037]and who have gotten the short end of the stick
- [00:02:58.256]in almost every facet of their lives.
- [00:03:00.707]It's really important for me
- [00:03:02.216]to utilize the skills that I've gotten
- [00:03:04.256]from my Communication Studies major
- [00:03:06.277]to advocate for them
- [00:03:07.707]and to constantly,
- [00:03:09.336]in every single avenue,
- [00:03:11.456]make sure that they are getting
- [00:03:12.736]the best that they can get.
- [00:03:14.037]So that way they can become empowered
- [00:03:15.776]and independent from their abusers.
- [00:03:17.627]A lot of time at the office
- [00:03:19.165]I am really able to stand out
- [00:03:20.696]with my Communication Studies degree
- [00:03:23.416]because we have a lot of presentations
- [00:03:25.925]and time that you will really interact
- [00:03:28.216]with different management,
- [00:03:29.877]with different positions.
- [00:03:32.005]And by really learning to understand my clientele,
- [00:03:36.325]being able to negotiate different contracts
- [00:03:38.576]has helped me succeed in the business.
- [00:03:41.267]And also being able
- [00:03:42.835]to
- [00:03:43.821]really dive
- [00:03:44.891]into different relationships with people
- [00:03:46.920]and make long-lasting relationships pretty quickly.
- [00:03:49.901]It's something that will always
- [00:03:51.131]benefit me in the office
- [00:03:52.680]and has helped me rise to success today.
