- [00:00:05.065]gave us the the opportunity to Jolgaon Matarasta, India
- [00:00:08.993]for seven and a half weeks.
- [00:00:11.149]We lived at a residential school and then five days a week,
- [00:00:15.214]we went to Anubhuti English Medium School.
- [00:00:18.088](chanting)
- [00:00:20.891]It's a primary private school,
- [00:00:23.750]but free tuition is given to India's poorest of the poor.
- [00:00:28.053]We were able to teach, and observe,
- [00:00:30.662]and interact with the Kids there.
- [00:00:32.659]And we got to visit their families,
- [00:00:34.453]and their neighbors, and we really got, you know,
- [00:00:36.749]a culturally rich experience.
- [00:00:38.809]There are opportunities to use it
- [00:00:40.823]for internship credit.
- [00:00:41.889]Other students utilized it for independent studies,
- [00:00:45.189]learning how to communicate with people,
- [00:00:48.059]learning how to go with the flow.
- [00:00:49.993]I came back a little bit more prepared
- [00:00:52.305]for a career.
- [00:00:53.164]I was able to see that more similarities exist
- [00:00:56.221]between me and the people there
- [00:00:58.409]than do differences.
- [00:01:00.528]It just gives you a new insight into a new culture
- [00:01:04.209]that you wouldn't experience any other way.
- [00:01:06.945]The highlight that I like to tell people about
- [00:01:09.184]is a surprise wedding that we went to.
- [00:01:12.046]There were so many people, such good food,
- [00:01:15.154]dancing, music, that was so special,
- [00:01:18.984]and definitely a memory that I'll look back to.
- [00:01:21.731]We got chased around by monkeys a lot.
- [00:01:25.035]If you had a banana in your purse,
- [00:01:26.350]you would better watch out, so, it was quite fun,
- [00:01:28.912]and it was exciting, and by the end of the trip,
- [00:01:30.463]we were friends with monkeys.
- [00:01:32.145]One of my favorite activities was seeing the Taj Mahal.
- [00:01:34.891]And that was one of those things where
- [00:01:36.992]it's on your bucket list, and you never,
- [00:01:38.865]ever think it would actually happen.
- [00:01:41.170]We lived at Anubhuti residential school.
- [00:01:44.106]The security there was great, I never felt unsafe,
- [00:01:47.974]we always had someone from the school with us.
- [00:01:50.532]To have someone with you who knew
- [00:01:52.094]what they were doing at all times
- [00:01:53.450]was very comforting.
- [00:01:54.887]I know education abroad has lots of scholarships,
- [00:01:57.317]and things like that.
- [00:01:58.567]If you have a desire to go, they'll work with you
- [00:02:01.311]to make it affordable.
- [00:02:03.121]I think I would just encourage others to explore
- [00:02:05.304]their study abroad options, especially those
- [00:02:07.426]that are thinking about it, but are on the fence, you know?
- [00:02:09.738]I was on the fence too, and it definitely changed my life.
- [00:02:12.514]I miss the people and the relationships
- [00:02:14.638]that I built.
- [00:02:15.754]I miss seeing the kids every day,
- [00:02:17.182]and their big smiles, and I miss the teachers
- [00:02:20.268]who were like our second moms.
- [00:02:22.139]And it takes a lot of courage to take the first step
- [00:02:25.327]in going, you know, out of the country,
- [00:02:27.169]out of your comfort zone, but it stretches you in ways
- [00:02:29.851]that you can't possibly get the experience
- [00:02:32.876]anywhere else.
