- [00:00:00.369]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.274]Zoe is showing us Canvas.
- [00:00:04.687](upbeat electronic music)
- [00:00:18.747]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin.
- [00:00:20.050]And I'm Zoe Falls.
- [00:00:21.348]And this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:23.184]and today, Zoe is gonna show us Canvas,
- [00:00:25.807]Canvas is a new learning management system,
- [00:00:28.060]or LMS,
- [00:00:29.220]and it's showing great promise,
- [00:00:31.263]and one of the great features about it
- [00:00:33.028]is that teachers can download and use it for free.
- [00:00:35.862]So, tell us all about it.
- [00:00:37.649]So Canvas is a great tool for teachers,
- [00:00:40.343]because of it's mobile component,
- [00:00:42.782]you can use it on the go from your phone,
- [00:00:44.731]and the features that are in the phone
- [00:00:46.959]are the same that you will see
- [00:00:48.678]when you are on your desktop.
- [00:00:50.279]So anything that you're setting up to do
- [00:00:52.717]at your normal computer when you're on your phone,
- [00:00:56.201]you can do the same thing.
- [00:00:58.430]And one of the things I like about it
- [00:01:00.636]is you can set up different buttons,
- [00:01:03.840]so that your students aren't always
- [00:01:06.347]over on the navigation side,
- [00:01:08.158]and the buttons are easier to recognize for students,
- [00:01:09.969]they're a little bit more fun and interactive
- [00:01:11.827]to deal with.
- [00:01:14.080]And one of the other nice features are within
- [00:01:17.355]the pages that you create as a teacher,
- [00:01:19.791]you can integrate stuff from Google Slides,
- [00:01:22.763]Powerpoints, Google Docs,
- [00:01:25.805]so right here I've set up
- [00:01:27.917]just an assignment where I sign them up,
- [00:01:31.888]and I just did an iframe
- [00:01:33.910]that has the Google Sheet.
- [00:01:36.486]One of the things that I do this semester
- [00:01:38.808]with my students is I have
- [00:01:40.598]a what we call the chaos dump,
- [00:01:42.965]and it's a Google Doc that's embedded,
- [00:01:47.888]and there's also a link for them to take it
- [00:01:50.077]out of the iFrame because we figured out
- [00:01:51.906]the maximum you can deal with in the iFrame.
- [00:01:55.481]But it's the place where I leave them notes for the day,
- [00:01:58.083]they go in during the class,
- [00:02:00.242]and they can update the information as it comes along,
- [00:02:02.565]when they have presentations,
- [00:02:04.003]they put links to their slides just within that,
- [00:02:06.163]and there's one for each class period.
- [00:02:07.673]So the other nice period is if they miss a class
- [00:02:10.203]as an instructor all I have to do is refer
- [00:02:12.550]them to this document
- [00:02:14.268]where they have the entire class, ideally,
- [00:02:17.750]contributing to this collective knowledge,
- [00:02:19.910]so students don't necessarily feel like they missed
- [00:02:22.672]as much content or announcements,
- [00:02:25.400]or changes to the syllabus that might be
- [00:02:27.792]an on the spot sort of thing.
- [00:02:30.322]So that allows you to be more flexible.
- [00:02:31.901]Next, now take me one step back,
- [00:02:34.874]what is an iframe? So an iframe is a way
- [00:02:38.797]to insert another, like,
- [00:02:42.629]webpage into a current webpage.
- [00:02:45.600]And the nice thing about it is you can use
- [00:02:48.435]the same tiny line of code
- [00:02:51.629]every single time.
- [00:02:53.230]My students kind of thought I was magic,
- [00:02:55.111]but it's, I'll show you,
- [00:02:57.387]it's two tiny lines of code,
- [00:02:59.847]and with Google Docs you copy the share link,
- [00:03:02.193]and that's the only And it will do it.
- [00:03:04.028]part of the code that changes.
- [00:03:06.071]And one of the things, you can either have it set up
- [00:03:08.950]so it's anonymous,
- [00:03:10.506]or you can have it where all of the students
- [00:03:12.154]log in with a Gmail account, Okay.
- [00:03:13.965]and then you can track participation.
- [00:03:15.870]So I use attendance that way,
- [00:03:17.726]instead of having to take attendance,
- [00:03:19.399]if they log into the Google Doc and contribute,
- [00:03:21.047]then they get attendance points.
- [00:03:23.322]Okay. One of the other
- [00:03:25.367]nice things for teachers with this
- [00:03:27.062]is definitely the grading system.
- [00:03:29.013]And the nice thing about the grading system
- [00:03:30.986]is the mobile version,
- [00:03:32.867]it's really, really good, it's a separate app
- [00:03:34.935]that you download called Speedgrader.
- [00:03:37.535]Okay. And,
- [00:03:39.772]So I'm gonna download it quickly as you
- [00:03:42.003]speak. And what's great about
- [00:03:43.605]it is you can grade on the go.
- [00:03:46.042]I was in DC and I was able to sit there
- [00:03:48.390]waiting for museums to open and do grading.
- [00:03:50.363]Which has been challenging in past semesters.
- [00:03:53.800]And it's fully, it's the same system,
- [00:03:57.468]so you can watch video assignments,
- [00:03:59.674]you can download documents,
- [00:04:01.625]it has CrocDocs, so you can annotate
- [00:04:03.923]and change within it.
- [00:04:05.965]And so it's the same sort of system
- [00:04:10.193]that most teachers are gonna be familiar with,
- [00:04:12.306]but you can add comments,
- [00:04:13.954]and students can send you comments, you know,
- [00:04:16.485]if they're submitting something, I've had comments
- [00:04:18.274]of like, "I really enjoyed this part of the assignment,"
- [00:04:20.282]or "I struggled here."
- [00:04:22.001]And that's within the comments.
- [00:04:23.510]And you comment, and then you grade,
- [00:04:26.320]you can single click to unmute an assignment
- [00:04:28.919]until all of the grades are done,
- [00:04:31.405]and again, like with all of the other aspects of Canvas,
- [00:04:34.957]what happens in SpeedGrader
- [00:04:37.465]is the same thing, mobile or on your desktop.
- [00:04:40.995]So you're not kind of chained to your desk or your computer
- [00:04:44.710]to get stuff done. So I downloaded it,
- [00:04:46.755]it downloaded really, really quickly, so,
- [00:04:49.400]and it seems to open and be fantastic, so,
- [00:04:52.326]And they're fully, you know,
- [00:04:53.906]it's a fully synced system, you can color code
- [00:04:56.064]so if you're teaching multiple classes,
- [00:04:57.946]you can assign different classes of color,
- [00:04:59.595]and that makes it easier when you're in SpeedGrader,
- [00:05:02.196]you can just remember the color.
- [00:05:04.563]Yep.
- [00:05:06.120]And what I love with learning management system
- [00:05:08.765]is the fact that in submission of assignments,
- [00:05:11.507]you're actually not tied to using class time
- [00:05:14.919]to collecting and making sure it's all there,
- [00:05:17.892]it's there, it's got a time stamp,
- [00:05:20.887]if you wanna give them another couple of days,
- [00:05:22.814]you're not meeting on Fridays,
- [00:05:24.300]but you want it turned in on Fridays,
- [00:05:25.740]it's not a problem, I love that feature,
- [00:05:27.782]and learning management systems in general.
- [00:05:30.291]And one of the great things with Canvas
- [00:05:32.125]for assignments Yep.
- [00:05:33.937]specifically is in this Calendar feature.
- [00:05:36.445]If you move an assignment on the calendar,
- [00:05:39.208]it cascades through to the assignment list,
- [00:05:41.646]to the grade book,
- [00:05:43.061]so you don't have to worry about going through
- [00:05:44.733]and changing individual things,
- [00:05:46.893]and it automatically goes to all of the students,
- [00:05:49.169]and they can download it and import it
- [00:05:51.328]to whatever calendar they use personally.
- [00:05:54.254]So how do you create an assignment?
- [00:05:56.297]Can you show us how Yes.
- [00:05:57.791]you create an assignment? So you can do it,
- [00:05:59.101]there are a couple of different ways,
- [00:06:00.314]since we're in the Calendar we'll go ahead
- [00:06:02.497]and do it through there, so you create,
- [00:06:04.356]you can either do an event or an assignment.
- [00:06:07.373]And so I'm gonna call this test,
- [00:06:09.881]I'm gonna make it due, April 9th is fine,
- [00:06:12.923]and then you can choose which class it's for,
- [00:06:15.966]got more than one going. Can you do
- [00:06:18.240]can you assign it automatically to two classes?
- [00:06:20.035]Or do you have to do it twice? You have,
- [00:06:21.669]from what I can tell you have to do it for
- [00:06:22.830]each class, Okay.
- [00:06:24.178]I have groups set up for different assignment types
- [00:06:26.292]that I have, so if you have that set up,
- [00:06:28.496]you got ahead and pick which type it was,
- [00:06:33.262]publish and not published, so when it's not published,
- [00:06:35.263]it's still sort of in a draft form,
- [00:06:37.260]kind of like if you're developing a blog post,
- [00:06:38.885]Yeah. a draft form,
- [00:06:40.325]published means it goes to everyone,
- [00:06:41.857]and then if you go to More Options from your calendar,
- [00:06:44.364]it'll take you to the full assignment list,
- [00:06:47.499]and from here you can do another iframe,
- [00:06:51.190]you can import documents, and they show up as links.
- [00:06:54.373]Okay. So instead,
- [00:06:55.929]so students click on the link,
- [00:06:57.438]and it takes them to the assignment,
- [00:06:59.087]you can assign And then they hand
- [00:07:01.293]it in, oh I see it. so you can assign
- [00:07:02.919]points, there are a lot of different submission types,
- [00:07:05.635]so if you're having them hand turn something in,
- [00:07:08.049]you can tell Canvas that. I love that fact.
- [00:07:11.622]The fact that it doesn't assume automatically
- [00:07:14.139]it's gonna be online, you can do it on paper,
- [00:07:16.251]and it'll work still. And then external
- [00:07:18.157]tools so if you have some sort of plagiarism check
- [00:07:20.478]program or your school uses a different submission software
- [00:07:23.451]where they track certain things,
- [00:07:25.076]you can select that,
- [00:07:26.562]and it'll also limit the types of entries you can get,
- [00:07:29.883]so media recordings,
- [00:07:31.577]file uploads, you can also restrict file type,
- [00:07:33.969]Oh, so you can say I want only
- [00:07:36.292]Word Document, Correct, or I don't
- [00:07:38.171]want something in Pages.
- [00:07:39.495]Or something like that. That's very nice.
- [00:07:42.203]And then you can assign it for peer review,
- [00:07:44.524]you can do required peer reviews that are built in,
- [00:07:46.360]you can make it a group assignment from,
- [00:07:48.356]So what does the period view look like?
- [00:07:50.886]Now I'm interested, because period view is something
- [00:07:53.627]we use a lot, Yes.
- [00:07:55.554]It really makes everybody better,
- [00:07:57.223]and also makes sure that everybody gets feedback
- [00:07:59.435]from multiple sources earlier,
- [00:08:01.545]so I love that feature. And so peer review,
- [00:08:03.340]you can either have Canvas assign manually,
- [00:08:05.940]or you can do it, and you can assign multiples,
- [00:08:09.075]and then you can say when the reviews are due,
- [00:08:13.347]and you can also make them appear anonymously,
- [00:08:16.111]so if that's,
- [00:08:17.504]so I like the various features and levels of control
- [00:08:19.989]that as an instructor you have over sending things out,
- [00:08:23.657]and I do a lot of peer review in my class,
- [00:08:25.538]and this system makes it a lot easier
- [00:08:27.791]to assign those out and saves me a lot of time,
- [00:08:30.299]you know, just setting up the system,
- [00:08:32.433]Managing, yeah. for what that is,
- [00:08:34.329]and peer review is
- [00:08:35.792]such a valuable Alright.
- [00:08:37.329]thing for students. So, and,
- [00:08:39.118]and can we look at the students?
- [00:08:40.836]So what do you look at?
- [00:08:42.485]What does the grade sheet look like?
- [00:08:44.701]So if we go into,
- [00:08:46.232]I can actually do a student view really quick,
- [00:08:48.901]and we'll show what the students see,
- [00:08:51.874]And that's always an important
- [00:08:53.547]feature. It's a nice feature,
- [00:08:55.032]because then you know what students are seeing.
- [00:08:56.983]So they have a nice to-do thing
- [00:08:58.585]that pulls from the calendar
- [00:09:00.071]and shows them everything that they have due,
- [00:09:01.859]and then stuff that's coming up,
- [00:09:05.180]but if they go to Grades,
- [00:09:09.662]it'll show them, so this is my test
- [00:09:11.926]student page, Yep.
- [00:09:13.481]So it will show them the list of all of the
- [00:09:15.407]assignments, And their points.
- [00:09:16.848]the points, and then the score they got,
- [00:09:18.846]and then it'll also group them so,
- [00:09:21.329]asynchronous assignments, group assignments,
- [00:09:23.558]individual assignments,
- [00:09:25.091]reading, so individual grades,
- [00:09:26.645]plus the composite grade.
- [00:09:28.319]And it's just the percent,
- [00:09:29.966]so it's not in a letter form or anything like that,
- [00:09:32.917]it's just the percent, or did you set
- [00:09:34.681]it up? I set it that way,
- [00:09:36.005]Okay. so as a teacher,
- [00:09:37.769]you can go in and the grade,
- [00:09:40.115]You are now in student view.
- [00:09:41.995]I can leave student view,
- [00:09:43.436]and as an instructor you can set how you want the grades
- [00:09:47.389]to appear. So you can change.
- [00:09:51.250]Correct, and you can set that up
- [00:09:53.279]at the beginning, you can change it for individual
- [00:09:54.997]assignments from what I have seen.
- [00:09:59.407]And it'll also mark things as late,
- [00:10:01.395]that's what some of the red ones were,
- [00:10:03.924]and you, the other nice thing is
- [00:10:06.664]the notification system.
- [00:10:08.313]Each student can activate notification systems
- [00:10:10.473]to know when something's been graded,
- [00:10:12.562]when something has been submitted.
- [00:10:14.443]If it's a peer review thing,
- [00:10:16.185]they get notifications about that,
- [00:10:17.810]someone has peer reviewed you. Yeah.
- [00:10:19.184]And as an instructor,
- [00:10:20.369]you can get email notifications or text notifications
- [00:10:22.921]to your phone when assignments have been submitted,
- [00:10:26.278]or if changes have been made. Yeah.
- [00:10:28.328]And that's great in specific times,
- [00:10:31.089]I found that that, if you're teaching a lot of sections,
- [00:10:33.504]that can become counter-productive really fast,
- [00:10:35.781]because an assignment is due that day,
- [00:10:38.938]you get 30, 60, 90 notifications
- [00:10:41.863]over a short amount of time. You can also do a weekly
- [00:10:43.861]summary. A weekly summary
- [00:10:45.134]works a little bit. It'll send you what happened
- [00:10:46.885]in the week. Yeah.
- [00:10:48.229]I found the students really appreciated
- [00:10:49.598]getting those They're getting.
- [00:10:51.199]On the spot notifications.
- [00:10:53.034]So for the students they found that more usable
- [00:10:54.823]than I think a lot of teachers,
- [00:10:56.238]wouldn't want daily notifications,
- [00:10:57.701]but weekly summary Yeah.
- [00:10:59.025]might be useful. And what does the Dashboard
- [00:11:00.882]look like?
- [00:11:02.120]What do you use the dashboard for,
- [00:11:03.552]if at all? The dashboard is just
- [00:11:05.393]the landing for all of the courses.
- [00:11:07.423]So the students would see any courses
- [00:11:09.582]that they're enrolled in that have Canvas,
- [00:11:11.555]and as an instructor you see the courses
- [00:11:13.459]that you're teaching.
- [00:11:14.783]And there's also, And then you see the
- [00:11:17.035]to-do and the coming up list. Exactly,
- [00:11:18.871]the to-do and coming up stays there,
- [00:11:21.030]and for the teacher it shows you
- [00:11:22.863]how many of them submitted.
- [00:11:24.183]And it's nice to watch that number
- [00:11:25.546]get lower as you grade them.
- [00:11:26.792](laughing)
- [00:11:28.356]We all need some kind of feedback as we go along.
- [00:11:32.809]Yes, when it's paper, I count them.
- [00:11:34.522]Oh there we go,
- [00:11:36.242]I like watching the little, How many do I have left?
- [00:11:38.121]I like watching the little number.
- [00:11:39.445]It's the same thing, so, what are your two favorite
- [00:11:41.326]features about Canvas?
- [00:11:44.393]So my two favorite features are definitely the grading
- [00:11:46.715]system and the mobile version of it
- [00:11:49.105]being as user friendly as it is,
- [00:11:51.149]has been an incredible feature.
- [00:11:53.680]And I also, like the basic as an instructor,
- [00:11:56.629]you design pages for content,
- [00:11:59.393]I really appreciate it because you can make it
- [00:12:02.804]more appealing, you can do more things
- [00:12:04.963]with the iframes,
- [00:12:06.969]with importing the images to make clickable buttons,
- [00:12:09.544]so those would be my two
- [00:12:11.867]favorite. And I love the iframes,
- [00:12:14.329]because it allows you to borrow, especially in education
- [00:12:16.535]I would argue, it allows you to borrow things
- [00:12:18.579]that you would see in the classroom
- [00:12:20.575]working with kids, if you're working in a Google App
- [00:12:22.942]for education school,
- [00:12:25.264]then you can bring that in,
- [00:12:27.147]even if you're not working in Google Classroom for example,
- [00:12:30.537]you can bring that in and use it,
- [00:12:32.488]and it looks very familiar,
- [00:12:34.253]and it doesn't have to go through that translation phase,
- [00:12:37.526]Exactly. Where it looks different,
- [00:12:39.382]and then you're trying to connect it.
- [00:12:40.893]Okay so today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:12:43.169]we learned all about Canvas,
- [00:12:45.187]and we'll see you next time.
- [00:12:47.570](upbeat electronic music)
