- [00:00:02.779]So without further ado,
- [00:00:05.041]I'd like to introduce the next Chancellor
- [00:00:08.159]of the University of Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:10.294]Dr. Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.637](applause)
- [00:00:19.019]Well, you know it's, when you have moments
- [00:00:21.789]in your life like this you try to anticipate
- [00:00:25.458]what the words are going to be in your mind
- [00:00:28.349]and in your heart when they happen.
- [00:00:31.133]And I've tried to think over the last
- [00:00:33.512]several days as we've led up to today
- [00:00:36.232]what those words would be
- [00:00:38.205]and it's kind of like most things in life,
- [00:00:41.512]you know, you don't really know 'til you get there.
- [00:00:44.477]So in the last hour spending time with
- [00:00:46.493]our family in the back,
- [00:00:47.997]you know, the words that come to mind for me are
- [00:00:51.453]eager, excited, energized, enthused,
- [00:00:54.493]gratitude, blessed, thankful
- [00:00:58.664]and that there is huge momentum at this university
- [00:01:03.293]that lies ahead.
- [00:01:05.490]I wanna first thank Hank, President Bounds,
- [00:01:08.680]for his confidence in appointing me to this position
- [00:01:12.360]and for the Board of Regents
- [00:01:13.982]and their confidence as we move forward
- [00:01:16.157]here at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:01:18.770]I'm looking forward to working with Hank
- [00:01:20.605]and our, my fellow chancellors on the other campuses
- [00:01:24.488]to further our mission
- [00:01:26.376]and build this university in the future.
- [00:01:29.031]I wanna just start by thanking Harvey Perlman,
- [00:01:33.021]our out-going chancellor, who, as you know,
- [00:01:36.168]has served this university over 16 years in that role.
- [00:01:40.274]And what you many not know is that he has been
- [00:01:44.147]in Lincoln, Nebraska at the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:01:48.093]since 1959 when he came here as a student
- [00:01:53.522]and all but a few years of that time
- [00:01:55.911]he was here in Lincoln.
- [00:01:57.192]He went off my home state of Virginia for a few years
- [00:01:59.677]to the University of Virginia.
- [00:02:01.992]Harvey has had a huge impact on this campus.
- [00:02:05.075]We can't even measure what his leadership has meant
- [00:02:08.349]and I'd ask you to give him a round of applause
- [00:02:10.504]for a wonderful leadership.
- [00:02:12.434](applause)
- [00:02:22.184]The University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:02:23.645]is a fundamentally good land grant university.
- [00:02:28.829]We're known around the world in a number
- [00:02:31.080]of areas of strength.
- [00:02:32.936]This is a comprehensive research university
- [00:02:35.453]that is a top 50 public research university.
- [00:02:39.470]But, my belief is,
- [00:02:42.505]and as I peer out into
- [00:02:44.392]the next decade ahead,
- [00:02:46.419]and we think about reaching the quarter century mark
- [00:02:49.374]now in this 21st century,
- [00:02:51.400]that our best days are ahead of this university.
- [00:02:55.358]You know, I tried to think of an analogy to use
- [00:02:58.334]and some of you that know me well know that I love music
- [00:03:01.278]and I like to sing.
- [00:03:03.145]You may, I don't know if I've become
- [00:03:04.817]the singing chancellor or not
- [00:03:06.160]but just to forewarn you,
- [00:03:08.795]but I thought of this song in Les Miserables that my
- [00:03:14.939]daughter Kelly and I got to perform in a number of years ago
- [00:03:18.022]called I Dreamed A Dream.
- [00:03:20.336]Remember that song that Susan Boyle
- [00:03:21.861]made so famous a few years ago?
- [00:03:24.177]From out of nowhere, this Scottish singer.
- [00:03:28.177]And, you know, when we dream a dream
- [00:03:30.704]about this university
- [00:03:32.389]and we dream where we can head
- [00:03:34.438]and what the possibilities are ahead for us.
- [00:03:37.179]More students, I talked about that in the
- [00:03:39.419]campus visit at some length,
- [00:03:41.573]we're going to be a bigger university in the next 10 years.
- [00:03:44.251]We're going to serve more students
- [00:03:46.118]and more needed students.
- [00:03:48.006]We're going to that more effectively.
- [00:03:50.427]We're going to graduate them faster
- [00:03:52.261]and get them out into the workforce faster.
- [00:03:55.003]And we're going to become not only a member of the Big 10,
- [00:03:58.619]which was a huge accomplishment of the
- [00:04:01.275]last five or six years of this university,
- [00:04:04.144]but we're going to become a distinctive
- [00:04:06.645]member of the Big 10 conference.
- [00:04:08.923]Distinctive in ways that matter to Nebraskans.
- [00:04:12.091]Distinctive in ways that lead the world
- [00:04:14.149]in areas that matter to Nebraskans in research
- [00:04:17.744]and creative activity and education
- [00:04:20.227]and translating that out to the public.
- [00:04:22.059]It's what a land grant university does, like we are.
- [00:04:26.389]So our best days are ahead of us
- [00:04:28.885]and what I would ask you to do
- [00:04:31.201]is I would ask our UNL global family
- [00:04:33.941]to roll up our sleeves, to work hard like Nebraskans do
- [00:04:38.336]so that we can grow this place,
- [00:04:40.789]we can make it flourish, we can make it thrive
- [00:04:43.616]and instead of when people fly over Nebraska,
- [00:04:47.253]they think of us as a fly over place,
- [00:04:49.792]the light that is here,
- [00:04:51.723]that the world knows of what we're doing,
- [00:04:53.856]will draw people here.
- [00:04:55.893]And it will be a distinctive university
- [00:04:58.027]that we will serve the state through.
- [00:05:00.438]Again Hank, thank you so much for the opportunity.
- [00:05:03.851]I'm so glad my family is able to be here today.
- [00:05:07.467]We scrambled to get our oldest son, Justin,
- [00:05:09.749]here from D.C. early this morning
- [00:05:12.203]so you'll get a chance to meet them.
- [00:05:14.784]We are very proud of the fact that we're now working
- [00:05:18.197]on our 14 UNL degree in our family,
- [00:05:21.995]so hopefully that tells you how much we value this place,
- [00:05:26.891]how proud we are to be in Nebraska.
- [00:05:29.653]There is, indeed, no place like Nebraska.
- [00:05:32.726]Go Big Red.
- [00:05:34.347](applause)
- [00:05:39.793](laughter)
