- [00:00:00.238]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.209]presentation apps.
- [00:00:03.296](upbeat techno music)
- [00:00:17.098]Hi my name is Guy Trainn,
- [00:00:18.358]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:20.857]from Tech Edge and today I'm talking about
- [00:00:22.646]some basic presentation apps
- [00:00:24.534]and this is a good time of the year to talk about it,
- [00:00:26.708]towards the end of the year.
- [00:00:27.928]Students finish projects, they document them,
- [00:00:30.448]and one of the best ways to document projects
- [00:00:32.378]is using presentation apps
- [00:00:34.491]and presentation apps have been with us for a long time
- [00:00:38.574]but there ares a new generation of presentation apps
- [00:00:41.826]that are mostly cloud based.
- [00:00:43.247]All the three ones that I will show are cloud based,
- [00:00:45.827]so you don't have to store them on a specific computer
- [00:00:48.550]or device and that means you have access to them everywhere.
- [00:00:52.572]They're also in some ways simpler than they ever were.
- [00:00:55.458]There less options than let's say
- [00:00:57.611]a full PowerPoint presentation,
- [00:01:00.030]but that I think is more powerful because it forces students
- [00:01:03.260]and anybody using them really
- [00:01:05.251]to focus on what's really important,
- [00:01:06.754]what do they want to show and how do they want to show it.
- [00:01:09.945]The first one I want to talk about is Slides,
- [00:01:12.301]this is from Google and it's part of the Google app suite
- [00:01:16.772]if you're using Google apps for education
- [00:01:18.478]you have access to Slides and one of the things
- [00:01:20.754]that Slides has done well over the time is
- [00:01:23.822]the importing of things from PowerPoint
- [00:01:26.665]so you can easily take PowerPoints that you've used
- [00:01:28.920]and import them.
- [00:01:29.733]So as teachers, if you created a lot of content
- [00:01:31.948]this is great, but really what we want to make sure
- [00:01:35.097]is that our students are able to work in Slides.
- [00:01:37.860]One of the advantages of working in Slides,
- [00:01:39.831]like anywhere else in Google,
- [00:01:41.395]is that students, or adults, can collaborate
- [00:01:44.505]on making the presentation
- [00:01:47.450]so each can work on their own page,
- [00:01:49.197]they can edit each other pages,
- [00:01:50.782]there's that whole notion
- [00:01:51.859]that Google saves previous versions
- [00:01:54.419]so even if they make a mistake or erase something
- [00:01:56.410]it is recoverable, even between sessions
- [00:02:00.453]and so that's a great piece
- [00:02:03.136]and now I'll give you some examples
- [00:02:04.598]of things that I've used in that.
- [00:02:07.463]This is for example a short welcome to Tech Edge
- [00:02:12.725]and you can see that there are
- [00:02:14.960]and whenever they make changes
- [00:02:16.199]you can see the differences very much like a PowerPoint,
- [00:02:18.495]you can see the slides on the left
- [00:02:20.120]and you can see it on the right
- [00:02:22.172]and just pressing on the Go button
- [00:02:24.002]will go into presentation mode
- [00:02:25.911]and then as it loads, you can see it go full screen.
- [00:02:32.128]So this is how you manage it.
- [00:02:34.607]To add a new slide you just press the plus
- [00:02:38.223]and you can see that you can add many different features.
- [00:02:43.485]So there are lots of features including Line, Shapes,
- [00:02:45.781]Tables, Links are very, very important
- [00:02:50.923]so you can link to outside materials on the web.
- [00:02:53.808]You do have to remember and student's have to remember
- [00:02:55.718]as well, that if you are including links
- [00:02:57.953]you have to be connected at the moment
- [00:02:59.983]to include that feature.
- [00:03:01.852]You can see that there are different setups,
- [00:03:04.291]so you can use lots of pictures,
- [00:03:05.633]whether they're full screen or part screen.
- [00:03:07.656]Very much like a presentation software
- [00:03:11.352]of any kind.
- [00:03:12.918]To add people to share, you just press
- [00:03:16.250]the person with a plus next to it
- [00:03:18.403]and you include the people based on
- [00:03:20.516]the e-mail they use in Google
- [00:03:23.910]and if you're Google for education school
- [00:03:26.042]that should be very easy to do.
- [00:03:27.830]You can also add other people depending on how
- [00:03:30.735]you're system is built and you can see
- [00:03:34.717]that you can build even presenter notes
- [00:03:37.440]and other things,
- [00:03:38.232]so you can do lots of work.
- [00:03:40.305]It's got enough to create really nice presentation
- [00:03:43.474]without doing too much
- [00:03:45.404]and just a button to add slides
- [00:03:48.920]is at the bottom of the slide selector
- [00:03:51.337]so you just do a plus, you select the format you want
- [00:03:54.426]and then you go ahead.
- [00:03:55.949]So this is Slides from Google,
- [00:03:57.595]really user friendly, I've seen kindergartners and up
- [00:04:01.029]use it very effectively and again,
- [00:04:03.976]lots of choices inside, but really simple enough
- [00:04:07.876]that anybody can use and the thing I love about it
- [00:04:10.761]is the collaboration.
- [00:04:12.203]The second one is an even simpler presentation
- [00:04:15.374]that is really based on more on the visual
- [00:04:18.259]and this is Haiku Deck.
- [00:04:19.517]I've talked about Haiku Deck in the past,
- [00:04:21.468]but it's worth while remembering that
- [00:04:24.760]it's there and I'm showing these things
- [00:04:27.442]right now on the iPad.
- [00:04:28.640]They look a little differently on my laptop
- [00:04:33.374]or a Chrome book, but they are available that way too.
- [00:04:36.686]So you can use it with any device you have,
- [00:04:39.510]which is again a great benefit
- [00:04:41.827]and I keep talking about this throughout our shows,
- [00:04:45.138]but I love these apps and those web based services
- [00:04:48.998]that you can use on any device you have
- [00:04:51.335]that frees students from having to find the same device.
- [00:04:55.561]It also frees them to share and to use a variety of devices,
- [00:05:01.290]whatever's available.
- [00:05:02.408]Even phones work with most of these,
- [00:05:04.460]including Haiku Deck,
- [00:05:07.446]and Haiku Deck is great because it is primarily
- [00:05:10.636]a visual form, so yes you can include words
- [00:05:13.482]and I do in this easy presentation that I created.
- [00:05:16.874]You navigate just by swiping or by clicking if you're
- [00:05:20.288]on the computer.
- [00:05:22.137]It's built for these big impact photos
- [00:05:25.509]and these are just a few that I put together
- [00:05:27.906]just to demonstrate what we're doing right now,
- [00:05:30.508]but creating an extra slide is very simple,
- [00:05:34.164]you press the plus on the bottom
- [00:05:35.952]and here it is, and you've got different formats
- [00:05:38.248]that you can use and you can also do an image search,
- [00:05:42.135]which is fantastic.
- [00:05:44.545]The image search, let's just do this because I'm doing this
- [00:05:49.076]about China.
- [00:05:50.233]You can do a search and they'll bring up different places.
- [00:05:56.034]I'll choose something quickly,
- [00:05:59.434]and now I have a background for my text again,
- [00:06:02.685]the emphasis here is on the visual,
- [00:06:05.062]less on the text, but you can include different things
- [00:06:07.785]including different graphs and figures
- [00:06:13.391]to add to what's going on.
- [00:06:15.546]So, Haiku Deck is great because it's simple.
- [00:06:19.833]It's great because it focuses on the visual
- [00:06:23.286]and therefore it forces a very careful choice,
- [00:06:26.091]I would argue of the visuals and you can of course
- [00:06:29.497]choose the visuals you yourself have.
- [00:06:32.118]You can change themes and change fonts,
- [00:06:33.959]but again, simple selections,
- [00:06:35.564]which in my mind and in my experience,
- [00:06:37.433]watching a lot of classrooms,
- [00:06:38.856]helps speed up the creation process,
- [00:06:41.944]because you don't have that many options
- [00:06:43.935]and so you're not meandering,
- [00:06:45.277]just spending a lot of time,
- [00:06:46.821]on a font, or choosing, or writing a lot of text even,
- [00:06:51.189]really what is the most important,
- [00:06:53.180]what visual helps you make that point
- [00:06:55.190]and that's Haiku Deck.
- [00:06:56.309]The last one I want to talk about is considerably more
- [00:06:58.686]sophisticated and has been with us for quite a while
- [00:07:02.181]and that is Prezi and what I love about Prezi,
- [00:07:05.126]which is very different than the other two,
- [00:07:06.771]is Prezi has a different level of sophistication
- [00:07:08.945]because you can arrange things in what is essentially
- [00:07:12.277]a 3D space because you can zoom in and out
- [00:07:15.406]and go sideways, it's a way to organize the things
- [00:07:19.632]that you're thinking about,
- [00:07:22.497]so let me give you can example
- [00:07:24.408]of a presentation that I did create.
- [00:07:29.122]Now Prezi's more easily maneuvered on the laptop
- [00:07:33.571]if you go to the app or to Prezi.com
- [00:07:36.964]and you use it that way,
- [00:07:37.960]but you can use it on the iPad to show it,
- [00:07:42.449]and you can do some basic editing.
- [00:07:44.258]It's not as easy and you don't have all the features,
- [00:07:47.529]but I've worked with it rather extensively on the iPad
- [00:07:50.333]and I like it.
- [00:07:51.368]I definitely like the fact that you can
- [00:07:53.806]move it around and you don't have to be then
- [00:07:57.524]tethered to a computer while you're presenting
- [00:07:59.373]you can actually walk around the room,
- [00:08:00.978]walk around anywhere,
- [00:08:02.239]you can do this actually from your phone.
- [00:08:04.493]So there's the visual representation,
- [00:08:06.952]the spatial organization,
- [00:08:09.044]and that ability to zoom in and out
- [00:08:12.051]to include different media.
- [00:08:13.739]So we have a video right here at the bottom
- [00:08:16.440]and we can keep navigating it
- [00:08:18.107]even beyond the preprogrammed steps
- [00:08:20.423]to make sure that we're getting to all the places we want.
- [00:08:24.710]So this is Prezi, again what's great about it
- [00:08:28.002]is the movement, although some people
- [00:08:29.423]if there's excessive movement seem to be
- [00:08:31.984]a little bit queasy so you have to make sure
- [00:08:34.990]that everybody's ready for it
- [00:08:36.311]and student's know not to just have things zoom in and out
- [00:08:39.196]all the time and move in weird shapes
- [00:08:42.772]in ways that is not productive
- [00:08:45.270]from the presentation perspective.
- [00:08:47.079]What it does add,
- [00:08:48.887]and Prezi has always been great about this,
- [00:08:51.203]is the three dimensional thinking about the content
- [00:08:54.088]you want to deliver.
- [00:08:55.085]So it's not just about making cool transitions,
- [00:08:57.299]but it's actually about contributing to the content
- [00:08:59.697]through that movement and that ability to zoom in and out.
- [00:09:03.009]So today we talked about three presentation apps
- [00:09:05.994]that you can use on multiple devices
- [00:09:07.783]and I'll see you next time
- [00:09:08.737]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:09:10.733](upbeat techno music)
