- [00:00:02.801]Hi, my name is Meg Lee
- [00:00:04.557]and I'm a senior biological sciences major
- [00:00:07.050]from Platte City, Missouri.
- [00:00:08.400]I have minors in biochemistry, psychology,
- [00:00:10.774]and humanities in medicine.
- [00:00:13.555]I'm honored to have been chosen as the senior representative
- [00:00:16.446]for the sciences portion
- [00:00:17.576]of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:19.570]In my four years at UNL,
- [00:00:21.304]I've had the most phenomenal experiences
- [00:00:23.547]because I'm a member of the College of Arts and Sciences.
- [00:00:26.446]There's four big parts of the College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:00:29.584]that I think are fantastic and I,
- [00:00:32.562]like they talked about earlier,
- [00:00:33.908]I'm a College of Arts and Sciences ambassador,
- [00:00:36.235]so I've talked to hundreds of potential UNL students
- [00:00:39.544]every week and we go into why we went to UNL.
- [00:00:43.709]So, one of the big things, and as we've mentioned today
- [00:00:46.240]is the faculty.
- [00:00:47.915]Like I said before, I'm a biological sciences major
- [00:00:50.407]and one of my professors actually just published an article
- [00:00:53.796]about inhibiting a stroke-related enzyme.
- [00:00:57.430]So, what kind of school
- [00:00:59.638]in the United States offers that education?
- [00:01:01.857]And you're exposing UNL students to the faculty
- [00:01:05.326]and that professor actually wrote me
- [00:01:07.083]a letter of recommendation for medical school.
- [00:01:09.738]And then another thing is,
- [00:01:11.411]through the College of Arts and Sciences program,
- [00:01:13.289]I've been exposed, not only to people in the sciences,
- [00:01:17.004]but people in the humanities
- [00:01:19.089]and then any other major and minor
- [00:01:21.421]in the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:01:23.216]which has been great because, when you're a science major,
- [00:01:25.954]it's like science all the time
- [00:01:27.594]and then you don't think about the other majors
- [00:01:30.320]that the colleges offer.
- [00:01:31.667]So that's what I think is great about the ambassador program
- [00:01:34.157]and meeting new potential students.
- [00:01:36.077]And the third thing is the experiences
- [00:01:38.651]that the University of Nebraska Lincoln offers.
- [00:01:41.836]We're unique in the fact that undergraduates
- [00:01:44.040]can teach labs, so undergraduate teaching assistants.
- [00:01:48.201]Last year I was a teaching assistant
- [00:01:50.652]for the genetics laboratory and this year
- [00:01:53.590]I'm the coordinator of that.
- [00:01:55.304]And in all of the medical school applications
- [00:01:57.306]I went to they asked, "How have you been cultured
- [00:01:59.961]"in your college education?"
- [00:02:01.797]Because I've been exposed to people who don't speak English
- [00:02:04.329]as their first language, people who learn science
- [00:02:06.535]in a different way than I do, and I've had to mold
- [00:02:08.537]my teaching ways in order to best help them.
- [00:02:12.538]And then the final thing is Dr. Erin Sayer
- [00:02:15.481]is the biochemistry advisor, she was biology when I started.
- [00:02:20.095]And she has helped me, she's been integral
- [00:02:22.954]in my application process to medical school.
- [00:02:25.321]She sits on the University of Nebraska
- [00:02:27.442]Medical Center panels.
- [00:02:28.856]She knows exactly what medical schools are looking for.
- [00:02:31.552]So, it was great in my application process
- [00:02:33.919]because she was interviewing me and she said,
- [00:02:35.756]"These are things that you need to work on
- [00:02:37.428]"and these are things you're great at."
- [00:02:38.938]And that's faculty all across
- [00:02:40.128]the University of Nebraska Lincoln's campus.
- [00:02:42.659]So, I've been given enormous opportunity
- [00:02:44.620]in my four years.
- [00:02:45.844]I graduate in May and then I move to Columbia, Missouri.
- [00:02:48.738]I'm attending the University of Missouri
- [00:02:50.721]School of Medicine in the fall.
- [00:02:52.813]And I always say, when we introduce ourselves
- [00:02:55.896]as ambassadors, why we chose Nebraska.
- [00:02:58.040]My dad was born and raised in Elsie,
- [00:02:59.667]which is western Nebraska,
- [00:03:00.916]and I've been a Cornhusker since childhood.
- [00:03:02.997]I said there was no way I was going to Mizzou.
- [00:03:05.081](audience laughs)
- [00:03:07.001]And now, that's where I'm headed in the fall.
- [00:03:08.633]So, thank you, thank you
- [00:03:11.002]to all of my friends and family and the faculty
- [00:03:13.439]that have helped me along the way.
- [00:03:15.035]I'm forever grateful.
- [00:03:16.339](audience applauds)
