- [00:00:00.042]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the classroom,
- [00:00:02.556]cross device reading apps.
- [00:00:04.356](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.687]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin and this is
- [00:00:19.500]Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech EDGE
- [00:00:21.964]and today we're talking about cross device reading apps.
- [00:00:25.114]When I talk about cross device,
- [00:00:26.473]I talk about apps that really can be used on any device,
- [00:00:30.699]and we're seeing more and more of those,
- [00:00:32.696]and today I want to focus on a few reading ones,
- [00:00:34.983]especially for younger readers,
- [00:00:36.482]elementary and middle school readers.
- [00:00:38.213]In another show, we'll talk about
- [00:00:40.521]reading comprehension for more
- [00:00:41.915]sophisticated users at the high school or beyond level.
- [00:00:45.154]The important thing, again, is that
- [00:00:48.754]when we're having a mix of devices,
- [00:00:50.901]or we're no sure what we're going to be able to have,
- [00:00:54.014]we're starting to see schools
- [00:00:56.056]with different generations of different devices,
- [00:00:58.275]so having different devices, actually,
- [00:01:00.560]the accessibility on different devices
- [00:01:02.035]is actually really helpful.
- [00:01:03.694]The first reading app is Read With Me.
- [00:01:06.336]It's from Intel Education,
- [00:01:09.153]It's a great new app that I just used.
- [00:01:12.843]It can be used in your browser so it is transportable,
- [00:01:16.640]and in this case, I'm using it inside Chrome.
- [00:01:20.843]What you can see is, right now, the teacher dashboard.
- [00:01:23.048]I have only one student, but I can also go to the library.
- [00:01:26.787]What you can see is that the library
- [00:01:29.833]is a series of books at an early level
- [00:01:34.330]for young readers who are just staring
- [00:01:36.883]to learn their sounds, mostly short vowel sounds,
- [00:01:41.619]and then as it advances in levels
- [00:01:43.451]it gets to longer sounds and frequently used words
- [00:01:47.793]that are more sophisticated.
- [00:01:49.385]One of the things that you do,
- [00:01:51.780]is you try out, to see, so you can record your voice
- [00:01:56.378]and here it is, this is one of the stories.
- [00:01:59.605]I'll show you how this goes, this is called Bag Tags.
- [00:02:02.879]The minute you press start it starts recording your voice
- [00:02:05.585]and then the teacher can hear that as well,
- [00:02:08.567]and so Bag Tags, then you press next.
- [00:02:11.679]This bag has a tag. Cat
- [00:02:14.628]What is in it? A dog!
- [00:02:17.345]This bag has a tag. Dog.
- [00:02:19.726]What is in it? A cat!
- [00:02:22.613]I can fix this! I can mix this!
- [00:02:25.002]The cat is in! The dog is in!
- [00:02:27.625]Pigs!
- [00:02:29.587]So now you can see that we get a score,
- [00:02:33.443]these are ribbons based on the fluency that you're reading,
- [00:02:37.691]and as you can see, these were all short vowels,
- [00:02:41.070]mostly short A vowels, but it's got some others.
- [00:02:44.484]You can actually get a sense of how students are proceeding
- [00:02:49.185]and you can also listen to how they read,
- [00:02:52.818]so there's a way to really get what's going on.
- [00:02:57.019]Now, you can also go to practice specific words.
- [00:03:01.465]You can study the words,
- [00:03:03.823][Computer} Cat, Cat.
- [00:03:05.843]and then say them.
- [00:03:06.981]So those are the words
- [00:03:08.340]that you can practice out of that reading.
- [00:03:11.439]Dog.
- [00:03:12.438]You can go back to your history
- [00:03:14.237]and here are the books that I read
- [00:03:15.839]and the ribbons I got.
- [00:03:17.220]You can see how kids can read these books
- [00:03:19.380]over and over again until they're fluent.
- [00:03:21.842]You can see, also, on the sidebar
- [00:03:23.455]that there are multiple levels.
- [00:03:24.941]It starts with the two books that are represented here,
- [00:03:28.715]but it also goes all the way
- [00:03:31.233]to more sophisticated books in the library.
- [00:03:34.843]When I say sophisticated, they're still
- [00:03:36.504]within the realm of early readers,
- [00:03:39.418]but you can see you have something
- [00:03:40.835]like The Birthday Present, so these are polysyllabic words
- [00:03:44.139]that do represent a bigger challenge, longer sentences,
- [00:03:48.382]longer pages, so you get
- [00:03:52.521]a much better sense of how students
- [00:03:54.811]are being able to do that.
- [00:03:58.217]You can stop at any point and go back to the library.
- [00:04:01.781]This is a great way to see what's going on.
- [00:04:04.334]This is a great way, there's a teacher dashboard
- [00:04:06.541]to that shows what level your students are,
- [00:04:08.259]where are they and how much work they've done.
- [00:04:10.442]This can be collected to a central device,
- [00:04:13.134]so when you log in as a teacher,
- [00:04:15.225]and I'm logged in as a teacher,
- [00:04:16.838]it allows you to see what everybody else
- [00:04:18.835]in the class has done, allowing for individualization
- [00:04:21.959]and your own work.
- [00:04:23.898]This is the first one, and as I said,
- [00:04:25.612]it's called Read to Me.
- [00:04:27.031]The second one is an app that shows up differently,
- [00:04:30.235]but with the same content for the IPad,
- [00:04:33.138]and I've shown it before on the IPad,
- [00:04:34.671]and I'm going to show it right now on the computer.
- [00:04:37.398]This is what are your favorite subjects,
- [00:04:40.498]history, adventure,
- [00:04:43.441]and the world.
- [00:04:47.851]I need to pick a few more,
- [00:04:50.211]exploration and ancient cultures.
- [00:04:55.101]That allows them to sort through
- [00:04:57.368]the vast number of stories that they have
- [00:05:01.014]in their website, and you can see that
- [00:05:04.346]there's a collection of my books.
- [00:05:06.192]I don't have anything yet, but I have
- [00:05:08.596]recommended books, and those come up.
- [00:05:11.394]The other thing you can see is that
- [00:05:15.105]you can go to the books you've recently read.
- [00:05:17.470]This is a book I recently looked at,
- [00:05:20.275]and it's a book about the Ninja.
- [00:05:21.633]What you can see is that it loads it
- [00:05:24.653]looking like a book and you can
- [00:05:26.754]navigate the pages
- [00:05:31.703]as you get along.
- [00:05:33.385]I can take it all the way back to the beginning
- [00:05:38.262]and now I can read the books,
- [00:05:40.312]A click, or a swipe on the IPad will move your pages.
- [00:05:44.514]You can read this, or you can get this read to you.
- [00:05:48.444]You can see that I can zoom in and out,
- [00:05:50.854]so if you want to look more closely at the art,
- [00:05:54.570]in this case there's fantastic art,
- [00:05:56.635]or if you want to get the words
- [00:05:59.852]to be a little bit bigger because
- [00:06:01.408]you need the font to be a little bigger,
- [00:06:04.112]you can do that on the screen as well.
- [00:06:06.691]You can do different activities
- [00:06:10.451]that are connected to the book.
- [00:06:15.071]It allows you to really interact
- [00:06:18.039]with the book more specifically.
- [00:06:20.384]Really, this app is designed to provide
- [00:06:23.427]lots of reading opportunities for students,
- [00:06:26.467]books across subjects, so they can really
- [00:06:29.962]help kids advance their reading ability.
- [00:06:32.923]The one thing that I would suggest from experience is
- [00:06:35.803]if you've got advanced readers,
- [00:06:37.242]they may want to enter their age
- [00:06:39.227]as more, as older than they actually are
- [00:06:43.001]so it gives them a different selection of books.
- [00:06:45.822]That helps manage that as well.
- [00:06:49.201]So you can see, you can roll through the book,
- [00:06:51.567]you can read it out loud
- [00:06:56.679]and enjoy it and learn from it.
- [00:06:59.459]It's a way to use the devices to access
- [00:07:02.466]a very rich library, even if you don't
- [00:07:05.799]have a rich library in your classroom
- [00:07:07.400]which we always want to have,
- [00:07:08.725]but there's a limit to how many
- [00:07:10.407]and how many levels we can have
- [00:07:11.788]and here there are hundreds to thousands
- [00:07:14.227]of titles that are available.
- [00:07:16.701]Definitely if our school doesn't have enough
- [00:07:19.150]or doesn't have enough for our readers,
- [00:07:21.159]this is another way to connect.
- [00:07:23.644]The last app I want to talk about
- [00:07:25.826]is an app I talked about before.
- [00:07:27.648]I'm going to actually use it from my IPad.
- [00:07:29.983]News-O-Matic is an app that allow to read.
- [00:07:33.915]Who are you?
- [00:07:34.937]I'm an educator, if you are a teacher you can
- [00:07:44.029]log in, and you can register,
- [00:07:47.541]teachers register free so that's definitely worth it.
- [00:07:50.745]I'm not going to go through the registration process
- [00:07:52.938]because I'm actually already registered.
- [00:07:56.586]This really functions as a daily newspaper
- [00:07:58.948]and everyday there are new stories in News-O-Matic.
- [00:08:02.549]What you can see is that the titles
- [00:08:04.730]are all organized in a way that's
- [00:08:06.472]very attractive for the readers.
- [00:08:08.196]It has news rooms, it has stories
- [00:08:10.158]that are from the news in a political sense,
- [00:08:13.537]there's news about science, news about sports.
- [00:08:18.033]For example we can look at The Search for Sam.
- [00:08:22.091]This is good, kids look for a dog
- [00:08:25.529]they sent to the edge of space.
- [00:08:28.086]You can see how the story
- [00:08:33.391]develops here.
- [00:08:34.391]It's a fairly short story.
- [00:08:35.590]One of the things that you can find
- [00:08:37.656]very quickly is what level it is.
- [00:08:40.187]News-O-Matic does let you know which levels they are.
- [00:08:42.986]They are for the middle grades
- [00:08:44.310]from about middle elementary,
- [00:08:46.074]all the way to the end of middle school,
- [00:08:49.614]would work really, really well.
- [00:08:52.285]There's a good collection of access to facts
- [00:08:56.940]and then ways to act and help if it calls for action.
- [00:09:01.784]Really lots of neat features that allow kids
- [00:09:05.233]to really engage with reading on a device or on the screen
- [00:09:09.703]with good content that is designed for kids
- [00:09:12.484]that you can trust, that is appropriate
- [00:09:15.490]and that includes a very rich vocabulary
- [00:09:18.045]that helps push that notion of language
- [00:09:21.087]and vocabulary development which is
- [00:09:22.909]one of the things we are most interested
- [00:09:25.383]in doing at this point.
- [00:09:26.950]There are some games, but they're very basic games,
- [00:09:28.982]I don't think that's what this app is really all about.
- [00:09:32.290]Again, the beauty of this app is that
- [00:09:35.030]there are new stories every day,
- [00:09:36.643]kids can choose what they are interested in
- [00:09:38.351]but they're still doing deep, rich reading
- [00:09:41.764]with the vocabulary and world of ideas
- [00:09:44.388]and things they can later discuss and share with others,
- [00:09:47.082]so this is News-O-Matic.
- [00:09:48.347]Today we talked about a few reading apps
- [00:09:50.402]that really help and get kids going with reading
- [00:09:53.723]and really work across devices
- [00:09:55.789]so even if you have a mixture of devices
- [00:09:57.449]or a few devices in your room
- [00:09:59.145]you can work with all of them.
- [00:10:00.886]I'll see you next time,
- [00:10:02.150]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:10:03.847](upbeat music)
