- [00:00:02.031](spirited instrumental music)
- [00:00:21.698]For some students public interest work
- [00:00:23.278]is really where their heart is,
- [00:00:24.938]and where they see themselves
- [00:00:26.078]spending a larger portion or their career or life,
- [00:00:29.418]and so for those students it's an important way
- [00:00:31.518]to translate the law that we do on the books
- [00:00:34.418]to real people in the world.
- [00:00:36.298]I'm interested in public interest law because
- [00:00:38.758]I have seen what not having the proper legal help
- [00:00:43.658]can do to communities.
- [00:00:45.438]I got to meet people who had been victimized
- [00:00:47.480]by more powerful neighbors,
- [00:00:49.861]and who had not been protected
- [00:00:51.621]by the public justice system
- [00:00:53.161]that was designed to protect them in particular.
- [00:00:55.981]And to get to visit with them and to hear their stories
- [00:00:58.561]and to see how their lives have been affected
- [00:01:00.841]by these injustices really opened my eyes
- [00:01:03.362]and motivated me to want to do more in this area.
- [00:01:07.102]The NPILF grant allowed me to work at a office
- [00:01:10.543]that I really wanted to work at
- [00:01:12.465]with people that really cared about what they did
- [00:01:14.945]and in a region that I think
- [00:01:16.206]that I wanted to be in after law school.
- [00:01:18.826]The skills I learned over the summer were skills
- [00:01:21.966]that helped me do research on complex immigration issues
- [00:01:26.546]and helped me learn more about
- [00:01:28.747]various topics in immigration law.
- [00:01:32.527]I was able to see how an attorney
- [00:01:35.687]would go about asking the client questions
- [00:01:39.308]and just seeing how they address different situations
- [00:01:42.808]and it helped a lot because
- [00:01:45.608]you're getting to see hands on,
- [00:01:47.838]the attorney-client relationship.
- [00:01:49.469]NPILF is important to public interest work in Nebraska
- [00:01:52.230]because it's the primary source of funding
- [00:01:54.610]for law students who want to spend their summers
- [00:01:57.770]doing public interest work.
- [00:01:59.630]The NPILF grant was important to me
- [00:02:01.170]because it provided me financial support
- [00:02:03.830]at a time when I was an unpaid law clerk
- [00:02:06.870]in a profession that I really wanted to be a part of.
- [00:02:09.850]NPILF gave me the opportunity
- [00:02:11.030]to actually go and do this work
- [00:02:12.690]without having to dip into my savings
- [00:02:14.530]or having to take out another loan.
- [00:02:16.451]I was able to do what I love to do
- [00:02:18.071]and not have to worry about the finances.
