Three University of Nebraska College of Law students share their summer experiences that were funded by the Nebraska Public Interest Law Fund (NPILF). About NPILF: The Nebraska Public Interest Law Fund (NPILF) Summer Fellowships provide a limited number of stipends to University of Nebraska College of Law students who secure summer positions that serve the public interest.

[00:00:18.444]This summer I worked for International Justice Mission
[00:00:21.207]in Kampala, Uganda.
[00:00:22.881]I worked with Justice for our Neighbors Nebraska in Omaha.
[00:00:26.593]I worked with the Colorado State Public Defender's office.
[00:00:28.940]Public interest work is important for students
[00:00:31.361]for a lot of reasons.
[00:00:32.983]As future lawyers we all have a professional responbsibility
[00:00:36.535]to do pro bono work and to be engaged in our communities.
[00:00:40.280]And so, for every law student public interest work matters
[00:00:43.928]in that sense, for some students public interest work
[00:00:46.904]is really where their heart is, and where they see
[00:00:49.155]themselves spending a larger portion
[00:00:51.192]of their career or life.
[00:00:53.027]I was able to work on a first degree murder trial
[00:00:56.173]that included complicated legal issues that I was
[00:00:59.299]fortunate enough to be able to work on with the attorneys
[00:01:01.784]up until the trial and then during trial be able to
[00:01:04.461]work with them at the counsels table
[00:01:06.061]for the two to three week trial that took place.
[00:01:09.635]My experience over the summer was life changing
[00:01:12.419]in a lot of ways.
[00:01:13.656]I got to meet people who had been victimized by
[00:01:16.792]more powerful neighbors, and who had not been protected
[00:01:20.269]by the public justice system that was designed
[00:01:22.573]to protect them in particular.
[00:01:24.493]To get to visit with them and to hear their stories
[00:01:27.309]and to see how their lives had been effected by these
[00:01:29.581]injustices really opened my eyes and motivated me to want
[00:01:33.645]to do more in this area.
[00:01:35.501]Being able to see the law in action, in real communities,
[00:01:38.680]with real people, really makes the law make sense in a
[00:01:41.421]whole new way when they bring that back to the classroom.
[00:01:44.003]I am grateful for the NPILF grant because it allowed me
[00:01:48.579]to do work that I am passionate about.
[00:01:50.893]I didn't have to settle for any old job just because
[00:01:55.683]it was there, I was able to do something that I
[00:01:58.093]truly wanted to do.
[00:01:59.693]I am incredibly passionate about this work
[00:02:02.093]and so to have the opportunity to do that while also
[00:02:04.920]being able to be financially stable
[00:02:07.821]it was more than I could ask for.
