- [00:00:00.104]d.ONE is a common first-year curriculum
- [00:00:02.759]for all incoming students in the College of Architecture.
- [00:00:06.215]What makes this program unique is students come in
- [00:00:10.131]perhaps with a preconceived notion of what design is,
- [00:00:12.914]and the program helps them realize
- [00:00:15.376]that design is about collaboration.
- [00:00:18.777]Students learn how to work in teams to address problems.
- [00:00:23.245]They also learn how to best represent their solutions
- [00:00:26.915]through making with a variety of media and technology.
- [00:00:31.384]I was always leaning toward architecture,
- [00:00:33.034]like ever since a young age,
- [00:00:34.068]but I just thought I'd take a year off,
- [00:00:36.075]which honestly is probably a mistake,
- [00:00:38.263]'cause it starts right away.
- [00:00:40.375]I was kind of up for everything.
- [00:00:41.788]I couldn't really have expectations
- [00:00:43.139]because I was kind of starting over.
- [00:00:44.715]I didn't really have any expectations coming into it.
- [00:00:47.338]I did take an interior design class in my high school,
- [00:00:49.730]but those expectations are already thrown out the window.
- [00:00:53.073]My name's Taylor Johnson.
- [00:00:54.513]My name is Mikey Almanza.
- [00:00:55.986]I'm Maddy Payne.
- [00:00:57.194]And I'm a d.ONE student.
- [00:00:58.606]It's completely different than what I thought.
- [00:01:01.995](techno music)
- [00:01:11.486]Being in it for two months,
- [00:01:12.778]I definitely look at the world in a different view now.
- [00:01:16.502]I used to think problem solving was just,
- [00:01:18.464]there's only one way to do it.
- [00:01:19.602]You find the problem and you find the solution.
- [00:01:21.324]But being in the d.ONE program,
- [00:01:22.865]you realize it's not a linear thing.
- [00:01:26.011]You start over several times
- [00:01:27.404]and you have to fail to get anywhere.
- [00:01:29.725]They're constantly challenging you,
- [00:01:31.107]and I feel like every time I turn the corner,
- [00:01:32.965]I'm challenged in some way.
- [00:01:34.765]Every class I go to, they'll take your idea,
- [00:01:36.474]and they'll say, "Okay, change it."
- [00:01:39.254]d.ONE is a program that makes you
- [00:01:42.160]think of different ways that things can be done,
- [00:01:44.738]things can be solved.
- [00:01:46.177]Right away when we got our teams,
- [00:01:48.441]we made a group chat, we text nonstop,
- [00:01:51.878]figuring out when are we gonna meet,
- [00:01:53.817]make this prototype,
- [00:01:55.065]when are we gonna fill out our presentation?
- [00:01:58.143]I'm finding out that it's not just like
- [00:01:59.639]coming up with sketches and drawings,
- [00:02:01.305]like you have to do a lot of research.
- [00:02:03.164]And since it is a process, and make me break it down more,
- [00:02:06.270]I actually had to find more detail,
- [00:02:08.062]just add more solutions.
- [00:02:10.077]If my partners at my table aren't able to criticize me,
- [00:02:13.565]my professor will.
- [00:02:14.762]And if that doesn't work,
- [00:02:16.340]there's always everyone else in the classroom
- [00:02:18.058]that also contributes and takes part
- [00:02:19.637]in seeing your project and your prototype.
- [00:02:22.284]I used to be creative for me.
- [00:02:23.759]But now I feel like I'm being creative for others.
- [00:02:26.197]I'm working with four other people,
- [00:02:28.195]and it's fun working with the team,
- [00:02:29.343]because I think that's what, in the end,
- [00:02:31.165]it's all gonna be about team.
- [00:02:33.058]It's starting to help me with my problem solving,
- [00:02:35.462]especially working in teams now.
- [00:02:37.401]It's real life things, it's real problems,
- [00:02:40.362]and real solutions.
- [00:02:41.692]We have this community garden that we saw,
- [00:02:44.427]and we had done there,
- [00:02:45.899]we're down to one or two things
- [00:02:47.663]that we wanted to work on with that.
- [00:02:49.105]You'd think something as small as a compost menu,
- [00:02:50.938]like how can that affect a community?
- [00:02:52.737]But it definitely will make a difference,
- [00:02:55.582]because what our design is doing
- [00:02:58.077]is making it more efficient.
- [00:02:59.227]Making it more effective.
- [00:03:00.702]You're never done with the design.
- [00:03:03.639]There's always more things you can do to it,
- [00:03:05.743]things you can change.
- [00:03:07.122]I would always think that I'd have this
- [00:03:08.840]perfect idea, this perfect solution to this design problem.
- [00:03:13.344]And he always just finds a way to expand it
- [00:03:15.718]and then find out what's wrong.
- [00:03:18.117]They tell you what's up.
- [00:03:20.183]'Cause there's no right answer.
- [00:03:21.681]It's not black and white.
- [00:03:22.877]Can't find it in a book.
- [00:03:24.363]Having d.ONE, it really I feel sets us up
- [00:03:28.378]for success in the future,
- [00:03:30.063]once we graduate, once we move on.
- [00:03:32.281]If you're looking for something that's hands on
- [00:03:34.104]and provides you with real world problems,
- [00:03:36.727]then it's definitely for you.
- [00:03:39.135]It makes you question a lot of things
- [00:03:41.824]that you thought were correct,
- [00:03:43.264]in a good way, that just kinda makes you
- [00:03:46.284]more successful throughout your four years here.
