- [00:00:00.202]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.397]Assessment with Rubrics.
- [00:00:05.113](upbeat music)
- [00:00:17.780]Hi! My name is Guy Trainin and this is
- [00:00:19.486]Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge
- [00:00:21.681]and today we're talking about Assessment with Rubrics,
- [00:00:24.142]but before I do that, I want to ask you
- [00:00:26.859]if you're a viewer and you like the videos we make,
- [00:00:29.239]please like us on YouTube, or if you're watching us
- [00:00:31.607]through iTunes U, please do that as well
- [00:00:35.255]because that's the way other people can find the videos
- [00:00:38.633]and use them as well.
- [00:00:41.338]Today we're talking about Assessment with Rubrics.
- [00:00:43.555]Rubrics are a very powerful tool to assess
- [00:00:45.947]a whole variety of outcomes in education
- [00:00:48.931]and that includes work at any level from preschool
- [00:00:53.854]all the way to higher education.
- [00:00:56.350]Lots of technology tools help you
- [00:00:59.369]really create fantastic rubrics, some of them
- [00:01:02.468]I tailor to use existing standards, some of them just
- [00:01:05.975]help you create something that you can use any day
- [00:01:10.258]and what I want to start with today is
- [00:01:14.113]the assessment from Scholastic.
- [00:01:16.389]And Scholastic has a Rubric Maker that is
- [00:01:18.548]extremely simple and can be used online.
- [00:01:21.195]Now this is not necessarily my favorite,
- [00:01:23.390]but it is very easy to use.
- [00:01:25.456]And all you do is you go to this page,
- [00:01:27.755]you put the project name, you enter student names
- [00:01:30.750]and then you can give them score, and there's a raw rubric
- [00:01:35.069]that has five layers, Proficient, Capable, Satisfactory,
- [00:01:39.279]Emerging, and Beginning so you can do all of that.
- [00:01:42.614]You can add comments and that's all
- [00:01:45.017]you need to do right there.
- [00:01:47.072]So it's a quick and dirty way to do rubrics,
- [00:01:49.710]now it's not my preferred one, because it does not allow
- [00:01:53.565]for very robust rubric to exist, with clear descriptors
- [00:01:57.664]that will allow students to use that to create
- [00:02:00.938]their final product, but if you need something
- [00:02:03.295]and you already have an existing rubric,
- [00:02:05.059]this is a really good way to create that final
- [00:02:11.584]expectation for that student,
- [00:02:15.686]and it will add the scores up and do everything else
- [00:02:19.308]so you can provide quick, quick feedback,
- [00:02:21.943]and again it's a free tool available from Scholastic.
- [00:02:25.763]So that's the first one.
- [00:02:27.132]The next one, I actually want to talk about website
- [00:02:29.525]where you can find a lot of resources about rubrics
- [00:02:32.113]beyond what I'm talking about today.
- [00:02:33.704]And this is edtechteacher.org
- [00:02:36.247]and on this website there's a specific area for assessment
- [00:02:40.774]and there are lots of tool options
- [00:02:44.687]and you can see here lots of rubrics,
- [00:02:46.649]general rubric makers and rubric generators.
- [00:02:50.887]I'm going to talk about a few that also show up here
- [00:02:53.452]but I do want to make sure that you understand
- [00:02:56.251]that there are a lot more things here.
- [00:02:57.725]So if you're looking for something specific,
- [00:02:59.745]especially with educational technology in mind,
- [00:03:02.590]this is a great place to go to.
- [00:03:03.844]So again, edtechteacher.org/assessment.
- [00:03:08.832]The next app that I want to talk about, or website,
- [00:03:12.922]is ThemeSpark, and ThemeSpark is a great little
- [00:03:17.799]tool that allows you to create rubrics
- [00:03:21.050]and it goes back to standards, so it really draws
- [00:03:24.602]from standards, from multiple places,
- [00:03:26.123]especially the common core, but not exclusively,
- [00:03:28.525]but it also allows you to edit it.
- [00:03:30.684]So, here's a way you can do that.
- [00:03:34.340]I'm creating a New Rubric, and you define the subject.
- [00:03:38.299]I'm teaching 21st Century Skills, and
- [00:03:41.898]then it asks me for a grade, and I'm teaching 4th grade,
- [00:03:44.986]I'm not really, but I'm going to do that.
- [00:03:46.739]And then you select what format of 21st Century Skills,
- [00:03:50.896]let's say Creativity, and now there's one standard
- [00:03:54.297]for creativity, and now it tells you what
- [00:03:58.384]is under that standard, a more general standard,
- [00:04:01.716]and you can say, let's take these two out
- [00:04:05.536]and we've got Generate and express new and creative ideas
- [00:04:07.916]and Take chances and fail, and now
- [00:04:10.946]you have this rubric, and again the thing that
- [00:04:13.338]I don't like it but does the most is, it does create it
- [00:04:16.577]so you don't have to necessarily, but if you want
- [00:04:19.885]to make something a lot more specific for a project,
- [00:04:22.265]all you have to do is click on the Edit button,
- [00:04:25.076]and then you can add descriptors, and then you can
- [00:04:28.721]print them out or you can save them online
- [00:04:31.298]so you have multiple ways to share that with your students
- [00:04:34.398]as a PDF or as a printed document or if you want,
- [00:04:38.903]just to send them online, and this really allows you
- [00:04:43.152]to create appropriate rubrics that rely on standards,
- [00:04:46.530]especially if you're using common core in other areas,
- [00:04:49.262]they're all in there, and that is really a powerful,
- [00:04:52.803]powerful tool that will allow you to do this work
- [00:04:57.517]very, very quickly, so you can create this
- [00:04:59.874]even the evening before it's not entirely recommended,
- [00:05:02.184]but I know we all get a little bit cramped with time,
- [00:05:05.238]so this is a way to do that, and it's fairly easy to,
- [00:05:08.999]if you want to reverse there a grading scales,
- [00:05:11.644]or choose different standards, easily manipulated
- [00:05:15.606]and then easily worked.
- [00:05:17.452]So this is again, ThemeSpark, great,
- [00:05:20.331]free tool, I highly advise it.
- [00:05:23.338]The next one that I want to tell you about
- [00:05:26.833]is from EssayTagger, EssayTagger is a website
- [00:05:30.955]that actually requires registration, but this specific tool
- [00:05:35.077]the Common Core Rubric Creation Tool is actually free
- [00:05:38.896]and it does not require any login or anything else
- [00:05:42.450]and you can share the rubric with everyone on the web.
- [00:05:45.783]You can print it out or you can save it as a PDF.
- [00:05:49.870]So, all you do is you go to
- [00:05:53.730]essaytagger.com/commoncore and
- [00:05:56.990]you select your grade level,
- [00:05:59.091]let's select a totally different grade level, let's say 7th
- [00:06:02.470]and then it creates, it asks you what area
- [00:06:05.894]do you want to do it and I'm interested in
- [00:06:08.193]History and Social studies.
- [00:06:10.086]What kind, here
- [00:06:13.971]Craft and Structure, and I want Text Decoding
- [00:06:17.477]and Structure Analysis and I'm continuing, and
- [00:06:22.217]now you get, you see it walks you
- [00:06:26.628]through those steps with little bubbles making sure
- [00:06:29.461]that you know how to work that.
- [00:06:31.376]And then, it tells you what they are, and now
- [00:06:36.554]you can see how you can add
- [00:06:40.854]or subtract, or just say Continue, and it'll actually
- [00:06:44.813]generate your rubric so you can add a title.
- [00:06:49.979]This is My History
- [00:06:54.614]Rubric, created by Guy,
- [00:06:58.770]it wasn't really created by me, and I can add
- [00:07:01.224]my email address, and then
- [00:07:05.644]I press on Create Rubric, and again,
- [00:07:08.814]because I didn't register it does need to know
- [00:07:11.124]where to send it to and the rubric has been saved, and again
- [00:07:15.142]it walks you through everything, and you can see
- [00:07:18.345]that now we can add or rearrange elements.
- [00:07:22.966]So I can start adding, right, descriptors
- [00:07:28.300]into the different rubrics, and you can see that
- [00:07:30.761]this is a five point rubric, Below, Beginning,
- [00:07:33.220]Emerging, Proficient and the strongest, and
- [00:07:37.666]you can again, print it, download it as a CSV
- [00:07:42.264]which means it'll open in Excel or in sheets
- [00:07:44.794]and that's where you can actually enter the grades,
- [00:07:48.568]and you can add new elements and all of that.
- [00:07:51.273]So, lots of options to use in EssayTagger as well
- [00:07:56.416]and that's a fantastic way to do this kind of work.
- [00:08:00.220]And again, you can share it, which gives you
- [00:08:03.819]an actual link that you can send to somebody else.
- [00:08:06.513]If you've created it you can share it with fellow teachers,
- [00:08:09.519]colleagues in other schools, etcetera.
- [00:08:11.517]And it helps create that
- [00:08:14.984]rich array of products
- [00:08:17.688]created by educators all over and then we don't
- [00:08:20.603]have to duplicate efforts necessarily,
- [00:08:22.542]although sometimes with a specific project in mind
- [00:08:26.280]it's worth creating a very specific rubric as well.
- [00:08:29.879]The last one that I want to talk about is one that
- [00:08:34.279]actually I have known the longest,
- [00:08:36.996]and this is called Rubistar, and Rubistar allows you
- [00:08:39.492]again to create or to rely on already created rubrics.
- [00:08:44.055]And in Rubistar you can look for example, let's look at
- [00:08:50.637]the ability to look at
- [00:08:55.878]Art History, so we can click on that option
- [00:08:59.930]and what you'll get are existing rubrics, with that in mind
- [00:09:03.238]this one does have some
- [00:09:08.394]some ads which can get annoying rather quickly
- [00:09:11.540]but if you ignore them you're still getting a great tool
- [00:09:14.756]so you can see that the categories are there
- [00:09:17.531]and you can choose a category, recognition of work
- [00:09:20.933]for example, and then the text gets filled in
- [00:09:23.260]and again, you can go back in and edit any of these,
- [00:09:27.255]so if you don't like them, you would like more details
- [00:09:29.541]or project specific items within that,
- [00:09:31.983]you can easily do that, and again, you can share that
- [00:09:35.106]or print those rubrics, so you're getting a powerful tool
- [00:09:38.786]that allows you to create something quickly,
- [00:09:40.586]but then also tailor it to your own specific needs.
- [00:09:44.940]So today on Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:09:47.030]we talked a lot about rubrics and the way we can use them
- [00:09:50.803]and technology tools that help you create them
- [00:09:53.287]and I'll see you next time on
- [00:09:54.565]Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
