- [00:00:06.450]This whole idea of like global citizens

- [00:00:13.116]I went to China.
- [00:00:14.876]We had the chance to go to high schools
- [00:00:17.831]and middle school and an elementary.
- [00:00:20.337]Then we had the chance to do
- [00:00:21.512]a family visit and that was so much fun.
- [00:00:24.818]We were in Mumbai, New Delhi
- [00:00:27.367]so we went to organizations that
- [00:00:30.151]helped the children of trafficked women.
- [00:00:32.626]The highlight was actually the people.
- [00:00:34.674]Being able to interact with them.
- [00:00:35.836]Go to their house for dinner
- [00:00:37.143]and really understanding the culture.
- [00:00:38.850]Everybody was just so nice and welcoming.
- [00:00:41.506]We spent most of our days
- [00:00:43.479]doing observations, taking field notes.
- [00:00:45.868]doing some teaching.
- [00:00:47.308]You have brains in your head
- [00:00:48.695]and you have feet in your shoes.
- [00:00:50.188]You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

- [00:00:54.135]To be a part of if for just a few weeks
- [00:00:55.873]helps you come and be able to
- [00:00:57.217]understand people a little better,
- [00:00:58.454]interact with them a little better,
- [00:01:01.515]and to be able to have a greater tolerance
- [00:01:03.486]and respect for their experiences.

- [00:01:07.688]The general application you fill out
- [00:01:09.363]is really easy and is totally worth the time
- [00:01:12.264]to actually do it so you can get a scholarship.

- [00:01:16.349]Well we got to go to the Great Wall of China
- [00:01:17.928]and it was so much fun, it's a hike.
- [00:01:21.181]Chasing monkeys off our windows.
- [00:01:24.391]Scared a salamander out of our room.
- [00:01:27.005]It's just all fun.
- [00:01:28.476]One of the Chinese men that were fishing,
- [00:01:30.492]he kinda turned and he didn't speak English
- [00:01:32.349]but he motioned, he's like do you wanna try?
- [00:01:34.643]I had a fish on the line and so
- [00:01:36.383]when I picked up the pole,
- [00:01:37.748]the fish just came flying at me
- [00:01:39.935]and it was flying back and forth.
- [00:01:41.652]We decided we would make banana bread.
- [00:01:43.230]But at the time, we're like,
- [00:01:44.809]where's the flour, where's the flour?
- [00:01:46.814]One of the kitchen staff gets this
- [00:01:48.051]look on his face, I figured out what you want.
- [00:01:50.761]And he goes off and he comes back
- [00:01:52.275]and he hands us cauliflower.
- [00:01:53.918](laughs)
- [00:01:56.755]It's a great opportunity to be able
- [00:01:58.312]to go see the world and it's a very structured
- [00:02:01.288]and safe environment.
- [00:02:02.867]It actually boosts your confidence a lot.
- [00:02:05.394]It was really like I am OK.
- [00:02:06.930]I am capable of doing this as a global citizen.
- [00:02:10.759]And it can be empowering too.

- [00:02:15.039]At some point, you just have to realize
- [00:02:16.714]everything has to go beyond your textbook.
- [00:02:19.348]It's important for us to realize
- [00:02:21.439]not only what's going on locally
- [00:02:23.572]and in our own community,
- [00:02:24.831]but also what's going on globally
- [00:02:27.689]and how our work can be applied
- [00:02:29.236]globally as well.
- [00:02:31.006]Just being able to work with
- [00:02:32.148]diverse groups of people will help me
- [00:02:35.774]pursue my dream.
