[00:00:19.020]you're going to learn about the series of steps
[00:00:21.946]that genetic engineers took
[00:00:24.639]in order to create a genetically engineered pig.
[00:00:27.542]You're going to be following the journey of a gene
[00:00:30.398]and so this page here is a summary
[00:00:33.462]of the steps that you'll be learning about.
[00:00:35.877]It's kind of intimidating now
[00:00:37.433]so let me simplify it
[00:00:39.081]and as you start your learning
[00:00:41.589]about the journey of a gene,
[00:00:43.447]let me first define an important term
[00:00:45.908]that we'll use quite a bit,
[00:00:47.162]transgene.
[00:00:48.555]So of course a gene is a DNA molecule
[00:00:51.968]that tells a cell how to make
[00:00:53.826]a specific protein.
[00:00:55.056]A transgene is a gene
[00:00:56.983]that was added to the genome
[00:00:59.328]or the genetic makeup of the organism
[00:01:01.906]intentionally by the genetic engineer
[00:01:04.553]and so if you add a transgene,
[00:01:07.478]you've made a transgenic animal
[00:01:11.565]or plant or microorganism
[00:01:13.747]and in our case,
[00:01:14.537]we're looking at enviropig
[00:01:15.976]as a transgenic pig.
[00:01:17.764]So in step one as you start your learning,
[00:01:20.783]you're going to learn about
[00:01:21.381]the first step of the journey,
[00:01:23.309]where genes that originated
[00:01:25.212]in bacteria and mice
[00:01:27.070]are somehow combined by the genetic engineer
[00:01:30.205]to design the transgene that we want to have
[00:01:33.269]in our enviropigs.
[00:01:35.173]So that will be the first step of learning
[00:01:38.029]that you will take on here
[00:01:39.887]in our enviropig learning environment.
[00:01:42.929]And eventually you'll feel comfortable
[00:01:45.042]in explaining all of the steps involved.
