- [00:00:00.120]Coming up on Mobile Learning In The Classroom,
- [00:00:03.404]Formative Assessment and Feedback using Exit Tickets.
- [00:00:08.692](techno music)
- [00:00:21.196]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:22.605]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom
- [00:00:24.540]and today we're talking about Exit Tickets,
- [00:00:26.956]sometimes called Exit Slips,
- [00:00:28.718]and Exit Tickets are a great way
- [00:00:30.970]to do some Formative Assessment to know what kids are
- [00:00:33.551]getting out of the lesson. Not just kids, adults too.
- [00:00:36.379]It's also a way to get some feedback about your teaching
- [00:00:40.346]and be able to respond to the way students are learning
- [00:00:43.780]in Real Time because you've got it right there, you can
- [00:00:46.571]look it over, it's short, and so you can design
- [00:00:49.764]your next lesson based on those Exit Tickets.
- [00:00:52.263]The first thing that you want to do is if you haven't really
- [00:00:57.417]thought about Exit Tickets and you want to learn more
- [00:00:59.871]about them, more than the couple of sentences I gave,
- [00:01:02.125]A few good places to find them, that information is
- [00:01:05.849]on Edutopia, and I've got this right here
- [00:01:08.960]and they talk about the Exit Slip and so you can see that
- [00:01:11.663]there's an article that talks about how to do this
- [00:01:13.876]with and without technology.
- [00:01:15.430]The other place that you can do this very effectively is to
- [00:01:19.975]look at The Teacher Toolkit and what The Teacher Toolkit has
- [00:01:23.210]is a few examples and they actually have short movies
- [00:01:26.856]about one minute long, that talk about this
- [00:01:29.151]and they actually do it across the grade levels, so you can
- [00:01:32.961]see how it works for younger kids or
- [00:01:36.282]for teachers of older kids
- [00:01:38.082]and across the continuum, so you can get the sense of how
- [00:01:41.274]it might work in your classroom. So that's just getting the
- [00:01:45.163]basic information. Now, when we want to do this, it's
- [00:01:49.790]really, really useful to use the Technology Tool, that is,
- [00:01:52.863]it's perfectly fine to use an index card, or a piece
- [00:01:56.251]of paper but that becomes really unruly if you're teaching
- [00:02:00.549]multiple sections a day or if you have a large number
- [00:02:05.803]of students or if you do this every day or almost every day.
- [00:02:09.117]Just the quantities start being overwhelming and if it's
- [00:02:12.153]already organized in a Digital format, then basically
- [00:02:16.001]everybody wins. So what are some ways to do this?
- [00:02:19.114]One way to do this, if you're working on your Chromebook or
- [00:02:24.155]Chrome enabled device, one of the things you can do is
- [00:02:27.778]use Google forms and in Google Forms you can create whatever
- [00:02:30.807]forms you want and I've created an Exit Ticket form
- [00:02:33.965]and once you create it, you can make copies of it,
- [00:02:35.631]so you don't need to recreate it every time
- [00:02:38.165]and you can see that will include basically three questions:
- [00:02:40.784]What are two things you learned today?
- [00:02:42.216]With room for short answers.
- [00:02:43.643]What is one question you still have?
- [00:02:45.453]That's a way for me to design my next lesson.
- [00:02:47.827]How confident you are about today's material?
- [00:02:50.652]That would be a Likert scale kind of an instrument.
- [00:02:53.397]That's all I'm going to ask my students to do.
- [00:02:55.239]So I will take three minutes at the end of class,
- [00:02:57.531]give them that link, and if you're working
- [00:02:59.295]inside Google Classroom or Google Drive, it's really easy
- [00:03:02.777]to push this to all of your students and make sure that they
- [00:03:05.725]are able to respond, it collects all the responses
- [00:03:08.549]inside your Google Drive so you have that information
- [00:03:12.032]immediately available and stored digitally, so that's a
- [00:03:16.124]great way to do this without needing any other apps
- [00:03:19.154]or anything else, now that works really really well
- [00:03:21.892]but there are a few other options out there.
- [00:03:24.518]The next option I want to talk about is Teacher Kit.
- [00:03:28.043]Now, Teacher Kit is an iPad app and it's also a Windows app
- [00:03:32.220]so there are multiple options for that and one
- [00:03:35.244]of the things inside Teacher Kit is the ability to get
- [00:03:39.307]an Exit Slip at the end of class. So if you are working
- [00:03:42.383]with Teacher Kit or if you're interested in starting to work
- [00:03:45.207]with it, you may find it extremely useful, even
- [00:03:47.418]at that higher education level to give quick responses
- [00:03:52.537]and to be able to get feedback very very quickly so
- [00:03:54.994]Teacher Kit is the second option. The next option I want
- [00:03:59.243]to talk about is Socrative. Socrative is a great way to get
- [00:04:02.198]information from students to do Formative Assessment
- [00:04:05.306]throughout, you can design your own quizzes,
- [00:04:07.394]and I've talked about this in the past but what I love
- [00:04:10.097]about this it actually has a preprogrammed Exit Ticket Quiz.
- [00:04:14.358]Basically, all you have to do is start an Exit Ticket Quiz,
- [00:04:18.947]it throws those three questions at the students,
- [00:04:22.430]they respond and you can look at it even in Real Time,
- [00:04:25.091]in the classroom as they are responding or you can actually
- [00:04:28.985]wait and get the responses later and what I love
- [00:04:32.305]about Socrative right now is if you link it to your Google
- [00:04:34.961]account, you will see those results inside your Google Drive
- [00:04:39.426]so you will see it just as if you've created a Google Form
- [00:04:42.741]and again, the advantage is it's already ready, it's
- [00:04:45.118]already there, you just have to use it. You can launch it
- [00:04:48.308]whenever you need and when you're done it's done.
- [00:04:52.359]This is a great way to get quick Exit Tickets
- [00:04:55.347]without actually having to prepare anything in advance.
- [00:04:58.461]If you're working inside Pear Deck or other similar apps
- [00:05:04.926]what you do is you have your lesson designed as they
- [00:05:09.468]often are and then, in the last slide, or the last couple
- [00:05:12.906]of slides, you simply embed this Exit Ticket since these are
- [00:05:16.715]apps that actually allow you to explore the responses
- [00:05:21.098]of students in Real Time, they do exactly what
- [00:05:23.473]Socrative does, it's just embedded already
- [00:05:26.299]in that presentation. So if you are using the presentation
- [00:05:28.471]software like that, that's probably your best bet.
- [00:05:31.628]So it really depends on the situation,
- [00:05:33.473]the class you're teaching and how you're doing it.
- [00:05:37.162]So today on Mobile Learning In the Classroom,
- [00:05:39.538]we talked about Exit Tickets and what apps you can use to
- [00:05:45.183]really help you collect all that information and respond
- [00:05:48.552]to it and I'll see you next time
- [00:05:50.397]on Mobile Learning In the Classroom.
