- [00:00:00.120]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.750]Museums Online.
- [00:00:04.880](upbeat music)
- [00:00:18.043]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:19.465]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge,
- [00:00:22.645]and today I want to talk about doing museum visits online.
- [00:00:27.057]So, obviously if you have museums that are close to you,
- [00:00:29.541]you want to visit them in person
- [00:00:31.051]because the space, the properties,
- [00:00:33.767]and seeing the physical objects is fantastic,
- [00:00:36.275]but online visits allow us to have access
- [00:00:39.569]to museums we don't usually get to see,
- [00:00:42.054]whether they're in the country but really far away,
- [00:00:44.724]or across the ocean if you're going to Europe
- [00:00:47.766]or to China or somewhere else,
- [00:00:49.437]or even if they are local, sometimes you want to do a visit
- [00:00:52.785]before you actually physically get there
- [00:00:54.875]so kids are more ready to interact
- [00:00:56.964]with the specific exhibits and they can choose
- [00:00:59.379]where they want to go and what they want to focus on.
- [00:01:01.794]There are lots of opportunities
- [00:01:03.535]to do these kind of visits online,
- [00:01:05.439]but one of my favorite is the Google Cultural Institute,
- [00:01:09.549]and what they've done is they've gone across the world
- [00:01:12.126]and gone to major, major museums and art areas
- [00:01:16.306]and historical events and historical sites
- [00:01:19.881]and have created the ability to visit these places,
- [00:01:23.388]to walk through them digitally,
- [00:01:25.408]and also to see the exhibits up close.
- [00:01:27.846]So, I have right now here the example
- [00:01:30.910]of going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
- [00:01:35.043]And you can see that I can zoom in
- [00:01:37.466]on specific art pieces.
- [00:01:40.543]I can zoom in closer, right,
- [00:01:44.542]just as if I was standing right there.
- [00:01:46.887]I can see the different exhibits on the bottom.
- [00:01:49.952]This is, of course, not everything they have,
- [00:01:52.063]but these are some of the interesting exhibits,
- [00:01:54.314]and these are great exhibits
- [00:01:55.427]that kids might be interested in,
- [00:01:57.447]and since we're in Nebraska, this is a way to visit a museum
- [00:01:59.977]that's really far away from us in New York,
- [00:02:02.625]and most of our students won't have the opportunity
- [00:02:04.645]to visit there, at least not any time soon.
- [00:02:07.312]And you can see that there's a map here
- [00:02:09.472]on the left hand side that actually shows you
- [00:02:12.026]where you are in the museum
- [00:02:13.487]and which direction you're looking,
- [00:02:15.345]so you can actually move yourself very, very quickly
- [00:02:18.388]to a different room, look up, move with the arrows,
- [00:02:23.078]and see what you can see,
- [00:02:24.573]and I can raise my gaze up.
- [00:02:26.593]So, this works very much like Google Earth.
- [00:02:28.586]It is Google Earth, but inside buildings,
- [00:02:31.119]and it allows you to do this kind of visit
- [00:02:33.628]and move through the exhibits as they were
- [00:02:36.228]at the time they took the pictures.
- [00:02:37.760]And this is on a regular basis updated,
- [00:02:40.964]so you can actually see as things change in the museum.
- [00:02:44.981]And I'm just showing you how we can hop
- [00:02:46.955]between exhibits and really see.
- [00:02:49.439]Now we're really close to the wall,
- [00:02:51.807]but we can zoom out and see the details.
- [00:02:55.686]And here we can even learn about membership.
- [00:02:57.755]This is their museum store.
- [00:02:59.494]So, it's really a map of the whole museum in great detail,
- [00:03:03.211]and you can actually explore what other museums they have
- [00:03:06.507]and you can see that you can look at specific Art Projects,
- [00:03:09.440]Historical Moments, and World Wonders.
- [00:03:13.312]So, if we go to World Wonders,
- [00:03:15.030]again, this is Google Cultural Institute,
- [00:03:17.561]we can go somewhere completely different,
- [00:03:20.588]let's say to Mont Blanc,
- [00:03:23.007]and see the tramway.
- [00:03:25.892]And you can see that now you can navigate this both
- [00:03:27.964]with a mouse or with a keyboard,
- [00:03:29.450]and I'm just navigating with a keyboard.
- [00:03:31.191]You can see there's text and pictures,
- [00:03:34.138]and this allows you to really see how this was created.
- [00:03:37.342]This is, in this case,
- [00:03:39.989]connected to the country I was born in, Switzerland,
- [00:03:43.030]so it's really interesting to me
- [00:03:45.051]how they accomplished this feat.
- [00:03:47.517]Anyway, this is a way
- [00:03:50.619]to explore different museums
- [00:03:53.488]and different cultural aspects through Google.
- [00:03:55.897]Google keeps adding to this, so this is really exquisite
- [00:03:59.565]and is getting better all the time,
- [00:04:01.795]very rich content that seems to be with us for a long time.
- [00:04:06.625]So, this is one way to access museums online
- [00:04:10.409]and a huge, rich resource.
- [00:04:13.544]Another one is to go to museum websites and apps.
- [00:04:17.390]I personally, and I'll show you in a second why,
- [00:04:19.836]prefer the apps most of the time, the mobile apps,
- [00:04:22.136]and they have two advantages.
- [00:04:23.482]First of all, they're created especially
- [00:04:25.155]for educational purposes and they're created also
- [00:04:28.498]to work with you if you go to the museum,
- [00:04:30.634]so these mobile apps actually help you
- [00:04:32.910]to go through the museum, navigate, and find out more
- [00:04:36.160]about the exhibits that are already there,
- [00:04:38.157]and in that way they are incredibly helpful,
- [00:04:40.665]especially if you're working with kids
- [00:04:42.221]and you want them to explore and you can't be everywhere.
- [00:04:45.076]And docents can take you through a few stations,
- [00:04:47.491]but if you want kids to have some free exploration time,
- [00:04:50.417]this is a great way for them to get some
- [00:04:54.969]of their own information and find out more details
- [00:04:58.336]about the artist, about the period, or anything else
- [00:05:00.704]that is connected to that specific show.
- [00:05:02.980]So, you can do it through the website,
- [00:05:04.791]and right now I'm showing the website for MoMA
- [00:05:06.927]because we just were on there
- [00:05:08.599]through the Cultural Institute,
- [00:05:10.294]and you can see that this is a traditional website
- [00:05:12.824]in many ways and it has a lot of local information,
- [00:05:15.866]but it does have some explorations
- [00:05:19.187]of the works that are available
- [00:05:22.414]and you can view works more closely,
- [00:05:25.929]you can share them, so you can actually see lots
- [00:05:30.695]of what's being offered at the museum,
- [00:05:32.975]but I would argue that this works much better
- [00:05:35.599]in the apps that are designed especially for that,
- [00:05:38.222]so I'll share with you the app from MoMA.
- [00:05:43.045]And what you can see is that on this one you have a lot
- [00:05:46.396]of access to a large board with a lot of art.
- [00:05:49.809]This is modern art.
- [00:05:52.479]It is the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.
- [00:05:55.730]So, you really have access
- [00:06:00.023]to a lot of products that you can just swipe through,
- [00:06:02.995]which is much easier to navigate
- [00:06:04.899]than the way the website works,
- [00:06:06.551]and it has access to a lot of products throughout
- [00:06:09.616]and you can see how easy it is
- [00:06:11.558]to get the information about the work.
- [00:06:15.018]You can immediately get the information
- [00:06:16.434]that's available right there.
- [00:06:17.897]You can read more.
- [00:06:18.872]And you can also bookmark and even share it.
- [00:06:22.706]Again, sharing is not always open to our students
- [00:06:24.956]because that requires social media,
- [00:06:27.013]but definitely saving and creating their own show is one
- [00:06:30.449]of those things that students can be creative about.
- [00:06:32.771]So, after you go through or as you go through a museum
- [00:06:36.068]or as you go through an online museum,
- [00:06:37.949]you can create your own show
- [00:06:39.331]by highlighting specific artists
- [00:06:42.139]and specific examples of the work that is available there.
- [00:06:46.830]And now you can see that you can explore a specific artist,
- [00:06:49.547]so once you turn that on you can see other examples
- [00:06:52.078]of that artist's work.
- [00:06:53.587]So, this works on the app a lot better
- [00:06:56.409]than it does on the website,
- [00:06:58.382]because the app is designed with a visual in mind
- [00:07:01.888]and with a lot less clicking involved
- [00:07:05.534]and just the art available to you at all times.
- [00:07:09.690]So, again, if we click out of that you can see
- [00:07:12.640]that at the same time you can still see the maps
- [00:07:15.495]of what's available,
- [00:07:17.418]videos of different pieces in the museum and about them,
- [00:07:22.414]and then if you go back to the home button,
- [00:07:26.781]you can see
- [00:07:27.848]what other shows are there.
- [00:07:32.091]So, this is MoMA, and the other piece at MoMA
- [00:07:35.558]that I really do like is they do have an Art Lab
- [00:07:38.832]which allows kids to be creative.
- [00:07:40.782]So, they've created an app that asks students
- [00:07:44.080]to be creative on the app itself,
- [00:07:48.607]and it allows them to draw, to make,
- [00:07:51.534]to rotate, and to be playful and creative at the same time,
- [00:07:55.597]so this shifts from a consumption perspective
- [00:07:58.708]to a production perspective
- [00:08:00.775]and really trying to either imitate
- [00:08:03.969]or use as a starting point,
- [00:08:06.752]existing works of art
- [00:08:09.315]or, of course, to just create on a blank canvas
- [00:08:12.571]like we have right now.
- [00:08:14.172]So, these are some ways that we can interact
- [00:08:17.422]with museums and visit them,
- [00:08:20.813]whether we do it on a website
- [00:08:22.601]or through Google Cultural Institutes
- [00:08:25.522]or we do it through the apps.
- [00:08:28.839]And I'll see you next time
- [00:08:30.302]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
- [00:08:32.578](upbeat music)
