- [00:00:00.050]Coming up on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:00:02.395]the four apps I use every day in my classroom.
- [00:00:05.757](techno music)
- [00:00:18.624]Hi, my name is Guy Trainin
- [00:00:19.841]and this is Mobile Learning in the Classroom from Tech Edge
- [00:00:22.922]and today I want to talk about
- [00:00:24.607]the four apps I use in my classroom every day,
- [00:00:27.867]And the first one that I want
- [00:00:30.038]to talk about is Google Chrome.
- [00:00:31.647]Now a lot of people use different browsers.
- [00:00:33.742]I personally like Google Chrome,
- [00:00:35.555]and I like it for a few reasons.
- [00:00:37.777]One of them is that once you sign in to Google Chrome
- [00:00:41.021]and you can see that in the corner here,
- [00:00:43.013]and I'm right now from my laptop
- [00:00:45.184]and it says that it's recognizing me
- [00:00:47.380]and I can sign on as me on any other device.
- [00:00:50.905]And at that point, everything that I've saved,
- [00:00:53.970]all of my pages, all of the recent pages I've gone to,
- [00:00:57.597]passwords or anything else I keep comes with me
- [00:01:00.406]and immigrates to different devices
- [00:01:02.399]and that goes across my mobile devices,
- [00:01:05.055]my laptop, and my Chromebook.
- [00:01:07.149]And the reason I like Chrome specifically
- [00:01:09.346]is that I work with districts and with students
- [00:01:12.206]who work exclusively with Chromebooks and that way,
- [00:01:16.957]we can communicate with the same browser
- [00:01:21.427]without having to make accommodations to different browsers
- [00:01:24.190]so that works really well for me.
- [00:01:26.419]What I love about this is it does allow you
- [00:01:30.524]to be recognized everywhere and to have everything you have
- [00:01:34.341]immediately and all of your logins from Google,
- [00:01:37.796]which are very common, across of course,
- [00:01:40.248]Google apps for education, but even for other apps
- [00:01:44.427]including some apps I'm gonna talk about later today.
- [00:01:47.213]So that's the first thing that I use
- [00:01:49.944]and it's very very basic.
- [00:01:51.254]It allows me to connect everything that I do.
- [00:01:54.801]The second app that I use every time
- [00:01:56.723]I walk into the classroom, whatever we're doing,
- [00:01:58.929]there's always time for students to work on their own
- [00:02:01.269]or to do a specific task individually or in groups
- [00:02:04.445]and for that, I have to use a timer
- [00:02:06.368]because I'm not really good at keeping time
- [00:02:08.383]while I'm conversing with students.
- [00:02:10.082]And the easiest way to do this,
- [00:02:11.615]there are apps that will do this on any device
- [00:02:13.955]including my iPad but the easiest thing to do
- [00:02:17.522]is actually to go in Chrome and just all you have to do
- [00:02:21.367]in the search engine is say, "timer"
- [00:02:23.624]and say how long do you need it.
- [00:02:25.184]Let's say seven minutes.
- [00:02:27.441]You click on it.
- [00:02:28.583]The search engine will bring it up, and it will start going.
- [00:02:32.470]So now we have seven minutes.
- [00:02:34.337]It'll ring and you can choose the noise at the end
- [00:02:36.398]but that really doesn't matter,
- [00:02:37.541]but now it's visible if you project it like I am right now.
- [00:02:41.167]Everybody can see it.
- [00:02:42.309]If not, only you can see it,
- [00:02:43.786]but it's a really quick way to get it going.
- [00:02:46.716]And again, you can do the same exact thing
- [00:02:48.638]from your iPad or even from your phone
- [00:02:51.007]without going to a specific app,
- [00:02:52.623]just live in your browser
- [00:02:55.521]and any amount of time will work on that
- [00:02:58.669]so you can set it or you can use just this one.
- [00:03:01.595]Again, going back and forth, I use Timer most often
- [00:03:05.189]but you can also use a stopwatch if you're measuring speed,
- [00:03:08.365]how little time is it taking to, for example,
- [00:03:11.012]everybody get ready and get going with the lesson
- [00:03:14.137]so that's another way to do it
- [00:03:15.670]but that's very very accessible,
- [00:03:17.174]very very easy, incredibly useful.
- [00:03:19.877]And what I love about this specific setup
- [00:03:21.827]is it doesn't require me to start anything else up.
- [00:03:25.063]I don't have to remember anything or where I put that app.
- [00:03:27.710]I just type it in.
- [00:03:29.076]The third thing that I use in my classroom
- [00:03:32.057]on a regular basis is the camera,
- [00:03:33.784]and this is where I like the mobile devices
- [00:03:36.069]a lot better than the laptops and Chromebooks
- [00:03:38.438]because they're truly mobile
- [00:03:40.838]and all I have to do is activate my camera.
- [00:03:43.763]And I use my camera in a few ways.
- [00:03:45.296]First of all, it's always nice to collect some photos
- [00:03:47.998]that we can share with parents
- [00:03:49.837]or with colleagues if we want of kids being engaged,
- [00:03:53.850]of what they're doing, and again,
- [00:03:55.549]what I love about the camera on the digital devices
- [00:03:57.890]is right now it's a very high quality camera.
- [00:04:00.035]You can of course go between photo, so specific photo.
- [00:04:04.855]I love video if you want to do some videos
- [00:04:08.148]if you've got kids doing some actions.
- [00:04:10.409]For example, in P.E., slow motion becomes very very useful.
- [00:04:14.338]Lapsed time if they're doing certain experiments
- [00:04:16.873]or other things that will work with that
- [00:04:18.768]but most of the time, I use video and photos.
- [00:04:21.642]The other thing that seems to be incredibly effective
- [00:04:24.160]using the camera is of course
- [00:04:25.494]to look and collect student work.
- [00:04:27.698]So instead of collecting a lot of papers
- [00:04:29.992]or if you're looking for evidence of learning,
- [00:04:32.195]all I have to do is be above the student's work,
- [00:04:35.792]make sure there's not too much shadow.
- [00:04:37.513]Right now I've got a really nice projection,
- [00:04:39.777]but this is something you want to be concerned about
- [00:04:42.312]and then all I have to do is click and now I have evidence
- [00:04:45.907]of student work that I can show to somebody else,
- [00:04:48.473]that I can send home to parents, that I can process
- [00:04:51.673]while the students are keeping the original
- [00:04:53.605]or keep working on their draft,
- [00:04:55.506]so this is incredibly useful as a way to do that.
- [00:04:59.943]And the last thing, and I've shown this before,
- [00:05:02.147]is there are certain structures that help you
- [00:05:05.497]use your mobile device with its camera
- [00:05:09.180]as a document camera.
- [00:05:10.840]All you have to do is set it above, put the document below,
- [00:05:14.281]and then even without any other apps
- [00:05:16.817]and there are fantastic apps for that,
- [00:05:18.567]but even without any other app,
- [00:05:20.379]you can have it function exactly like a document camera.
- [00:05:23.508]So if you have a mobile device like that,
- [00:05:25.742]you really don't need an extra document camera.
- [00:05:29.070]This can serve all of your purposes, and again,
- [00:05:31.907]one of the advantages, you can have it in a fixed device
- [00:05:34.262]but you can also use it anywhere in your classroom.
- [00:05:36.610]So if you're projecting and you want to show somebody's work
- [00:05:39.780]you can just stand above them and show even better,
- [00:05:43.945]stand above them, take a picture,
- [00:05:45.696]and then show the picture
- [00:05:46.733]because then you don't have to stay there frozen.
- [00:05:49.148]But if you want to show something in action,
- [00:05:51.472]of course the camera becomes useful again
- [00:05:53.706]and the great thing is, is once you take a picture,
- [00:05:56.392]you also have the evidence collected
- [00:05:59.199]and saved on your device.
- [00:06:01.373]And the one thing I want to remind everybody is especially
- [00:06:04.178]if you're doing video with photos to a certain degree,
- [00:06:06.483]depending on how much memory you have,
- [00:06:08.385]you want to find a way to do some cloud storage
- [00:06:11.343]so you don't have to store everything on your device
- [00:06:13.607]because I know most teachers
- [00:06:15.348]get the smallest devices possible from a memory perspective.
- [00:06:18.910]This is just district choices to reduce cost,
- [00:06:21.506]and as a result, they fill them up really really quickly
- [00:06:24.585]so you want to make sure that you're saving space
- [00:06:26.758]by using cloud services, and we'll talk about cloud services
- [00:06:31.005]probably next time as a reminder of what's out there
- [00:06:34.295]and what can be used.
- [00:06:35.714]The last app I want to talk about is called Padlet,
- [00:06:40.021]and again, Padlet is an app
- [00:06:41.681]that is available on your browser.
- [00:06:44.277]It's available on mobile devices,
- [00:06:47.869]and I'm going to show it from my browser
- [00:06:52.246]because I've shown it before and I think it's nice to see
- [00:06:55.284]from a different perspective.
- [00:06:57.628]So I've downloaded the specific app.
- [00:07:00.828]If you want to go to your apps inside Chrome,
- [00:07:03.967]you go on the left side.
- [00:07:05.356]There's a marker that says here are your apps.
- [00:07:07.801]In my case, it's on my second page
- [00:07:09.702]and this is the Padlet app, and you can see
- [00:07:13.566]that the login can be done through my Google ID,
- [00:07:18.305]so this is a way to login with Google.
- [00:07:23.357]And since I'm logged in, it already knows I'm there
- [00:07:26.526]and it allows me to choose an account,
- [00:07:28.337]and you can have multiple accounts which is really nice
- [00:07:31.002]if you actually have multiple accounts you're running,
- [00:07:35.743]one for a specific class, one as a coach or something else.
- [00:07:39.667]I like condensing most of mine under the same thing
- [00:07:42.383]just because it's easier to do, and then,
- [00:07:46.700]what you can see is these are my recently updated Padlets.
- [00:07:51.831]These are Padlets I've used in my classroom
- [00:07:53.673]for different reasons, and what you can see is,
- [00:07:56.430]this serves as a board where I can post
- [00:08:00.083]and more importantly,
- [00:08:01.743]everybody in my classroom can post
- [00:08:03.403]so I send them a link out.
- [00:08:05.365]An account is really helpful
- [00:08:07.901]because then everything is under the same account.
- [00:08:10.949]You can name your page
- [00:08:13.757]and then different students can post.
- [00:08:15.326]And again, you can post.
- [00:08:16.564]You can see here text is very easy
- [00:08:18.516]but you can post pictures.
- [00:08:19.905]You can post audio and you can post links to the Web,
- [00:08:23.342]so there are lots of things you can put there,
- [00:08:25.636]and that's a very quick way
- [00:08:27.266]if you're separating the students to do some group work.
- [00:08:30.013]When you come together from a jigsaw for example,
- [00:08:32.880]you can have each group talk about what they're doing
- [00:08:36.623]or if you want students to comment and then share,
- [00:08:39.128]that's another way to do it.
- [00:08:40.607]So even individual students of pairs
- [00:08:43.012]can each have a small comment.
- [00:08:45.880]They can then comment on each other's work
- [00:08:47.872]and expand the scope of what's available there.
- [00:08:51.481]So, Padlet is a great tool for on the go student work,
- [00:08:56.720]students sharing with each other,
- [00:08:58.543]and sharing with you.
- [00:08:59.398]And what I love about having a Padlet account
- [00:09:01.894]is then it is all saved, so you can see,
- [00:09:04.100]this is from last semester for me for example.
- [00:09:06.636]I still have it if I want to look at it,
- [00:09:08.588]if I want to see what happened,
- [00:09:10.020]or even if I want to use it an assessment,
- [00:09:12.810]a formative assessment, this is a great tool.
- [00:09:15.466]So today, on Mobile Learning in the Classroom,
- [00:09:17.730]we talked about the four apps
- [00:09:19.631]that I use every day in my classroom,
- [00:09:21.724]and I'll see you next time
- [00:09:22.601]on Mobile Learning in the Classroom.
