- [00:00:16.324]is that nearly two thirds of Nebraska adults,
- [00:00:18.528]and one third of Nebraska children,
- [00:00:20.107]are either obese or overweight.
- [00:00:22.348]Additionally, many Nebraskans face poverty and hunger.
- [00:00:25.691]In 2014, more than one in eight
- [00:00:27.747]Nebraska households with children reported facing
- [00:00:30.068]financial challenges to put food on the table.
- [00:00:33.191]The Nebraska Extension SNAP-Ed Program's goal
- [00:00:35.699]is to improve the likelihood that
- [00:00:37.138]people eligible for SNAP will make
- [00:00:39.329]healthy food choices within a limited budget
- [00:00:41.395]and choose physically active lifestyles.
- [00:00:43.926]The Nebraska Nutrition Education Program
- [00:00:46.390]consists of The Supplemental Nutrition
- [00:00:48.561]Assistance Program-Education
- [00:00:50.685]and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program.
- [00:00:54.713]SNAP-Ed is a free nutrition education program
- [00:00:57.628]available to all SNAP participants.
- [00:01:00.588]SNAP-Ed provides educational programs
- [00:01:03.211]that help participants make healthy food
- [00:01:05.893]choices within a limited budget,
- [00:01:07.485]and choose physically active lifestyles.
- [00:01:10.688]SNAP-Ed reaches adults and youth,
- [00:01:12.964]and offers lessons in the areas
- [00:01:14.728]of diet quality and food resource management
- [00:01:17.689]for a culturally diverse, limited-resource audience,
- [00:01:21.125]either individually or in small groups.
- [00:01:24.130]SNAP-Ed also reaches youth through
- [00:01:26.070]in school and out of school classes.

- [00:01:35.404]SNAP-Ed is a added benefit to stamp participants.
- [00:01:38.468]SNAP-Ed staff teach participants how to plan meals,
- [00:01:41.451]save money at the grocery store,
- [00:01:43.204]read food labels, eat a healthy balanced diet,
- [00:01:46.165]be physically active, and choose moderate portion sizes.
- [00:01:49.670]One of our goals is to help parents
- [00:01:51.226]and caregivers become confident
- [00:01:53.350]that they are providing healthy food
- [00:01:55.010]and physical activity choices for their family,
- [00:01:57.623]on a tight budget.
- [00:01:58.982]We also talked about meal planning,
- [00:02:00.769]when you wanna plan out your meals,
- [00:02:02.192]for like a week or a month ahead,
- [00:02:03.456]that way you know what you're eating
- [00:02:04.826]and what you're buying ahead of time,
- [00:02:06.347]and you're eating a lot more healthy,
- [00:02:07.660]and you're taking care of yourself a lot better that way.

- [00:02:17.480]In 2014,
- [00:02:18.828]SNAP-Ed had 5,324 adults enrolled in the program
- [00:02:22.903]and 1,054 graduates.
- [00:02:25.804]Of those that graduated,
- [00:02:26.884]78% improved at least one food resource management skill,
- [00:02:30.517]84% improved in at least one nutrition practice,
- [00:02:33.698]and 54% improved in at least one food safety practice.
- [00:02:37.726]SNAP-Ed also had over 156,000 contacts with youth,
- [00:02:41.987]both in school and out of school youth programs.
- [00:02:45.272]I'm definitely gonna start shopping with a list,
- [00:02:47.328]and paying more attention to the nutrition facts.
