- [00:00:01.687]Families in Nebraska,
- [00:00:03.001]Poland, and the Philippines have
- [00:00:04.969]at least one thing in common.
- [00:00:07.102]They are dealing with cultural shifts.
- [00:00:09.514]Maria DeGuzman studies the challenges
- [00:00:12.255]faced by immigrant families.
- [00:00:14.495]The goal is really to expand
- [00:00:15.817]our understanding of family life,
- [00:00:17.887]especially in the midst of social change.
- [00:00:20.873]I think a lot of the theories around family life
- [00:00:23.593]still depict family a a traditional, sort of static entity
- [00:00:27.546]when we know very well that with migration,
- [00:00:29.778]globalization, social change, and just mobility,
- [00:00:32.876]that families look so different
- [00:00:34.488]in different parts of the world.
- [00:00:36.354]Graduate student, AileenGarcia, worked
- [00:00:38.870]with Dr. Deguzman and conducts her own research into
- [00:00:42.060]the influence of American culture on immigrant families.
- [00:00:46.145]It's very important that we get a clear picture
- [00:00:48.523]of their experiences so we can help them better.
- [00:00:52.384]Dr. DeGuzman provides both guidance
- [00:00:55.125]and opportuniy.
- [00:00:57.034]She provides us with hands on research experiences
- [00:01:00.362]and with different opportunities that
- [00:01:02.398]help expand my skills and my scholarship.
- [00:01:06.580]She gives you enough independence
- [00:01:08.489]to work on your personal interest,
- [00:01:11.007]but at the same time you'll be amazed
- [00:01:13.449]at how she can still guide you every step of the way.
- [00:01:15.966]We do encourage them from the beginning
- [00:01:18.014]to get involved in research projects,
- [00:01:20.862]whether it's collecting data, analyzing data,
- [00:01:24.743]helping with writing grants and so on,
- [00:01:28.094]and then they go and present in various conferences.
- [00:01:31.464]Graduate students also benefit
- [00:01:33.660]from the collaborative atmostphere
- [00:01:35.676]that opens the door to research across disciplines.
- [00:01:39.549]My research teams include people from community planning,
- [00:01:43.698]from psychology, from...
- [00:01:46.194]I was just recently in a research meeting
- [00:01:48.615]with folks from economics,
- [00:01:50.139]so you know if you're a student coming in,
- [00:01:52.103]you're not only getting training in our field
- [00:01:55.238]but in working with different faculties, as well.
- [00:01:58.182]Dr. DeGuzman also works
- [00:02:00.080]directly in the community putting research based programming
- [00:02:04.006]into practice to help children and families.
