- [00:00:01.136]Drock just talked about fire.
- [00:00:02.436]Now we can talk about drinking, I guess, at this point.
- [00:00:04.747]You'll find out how much of a plant geek I am,
- [00:00:07.231]is because I don't drink beer,
- [00:00:09.553]or alcohol, as Kim Todd can vouch for me.
- [00:00:13.233]But I think the plant is,
- [00:00:14.673]what's that?
- [00:00:15.590]Oh, Kim and Drock are my taste testers for this.
- [00:00:20.656]So, hops is a emerging crop
- [00:00:23.171]that you're probably hearing lots about.
- [00:00:25.133]And the reason you're hearing more and more about it
- [00:00:26.735]is most of the hops production in the United States
- [00:00:29.578]is in the Northwest, Washington, Oregon area,
- [00:00:33.340]28,000 acres of hops.
- [00:00:35.894]The problem they're having is lots of irrigation,
- [00:00:38.332]water concerns,
- [00:00:39.980]and we're seeing movement of hops production
- [00:00:41.791]over towards the Michigan area and the Northeast.
- [00:00:45.611]This crop actually grows quite well
- [00:00:47.410]through a lot of different types of conditions.
- [00:00:49.929]And we have an emerging group of people
- [00:00:52.356]that are interested in hops here.
- [00:00:54.376]Kind of a, it's really a small number.
- [00:00:58.369]There's about 14 growers,
- [00:01:00.354]regionally only about two or three acres,
- [00:01:02.490]but we have a grower over in Plattsmouth
- [00:01:05.172]that's put in now 12 acres of hops.
- [00:01:07.749]My concern with this is we don't have any baseline knowledge
- [00:01:10.593]of whether it's even worth the time.
- [00:01:12.869]So, this grant that we received is for us
- [00:01:16.793]to evaluate six key types of hops.
- [00:01:20.531]And let me see if I can figure out how to move on.
- [00:01:23.688]To look at six key different types of hops
- [00:01:26.428]that might have some value in the brewing industry.
- [00:01:30.085]Now, in the bottom you'll notice here it says
- [00:01:31.826]the desirable qualities that we're looking for.
- [00:01:34.067]The alpha hops, which is for your beer drinkers,
- [00:01:37.050]the ones that's gonna give you that flavor,
- [00:01:39.186]that's gonna counteract the sweetness
- [00:01:41.810]that occurs in beer.
- [00:01:43.226]But it also gives that foaming head that people like to see.
- [00:01:46.744]The beta acids is another component of hops
- [00:01:50.992]that's antimicrobial and has some medicinal purposes.
- [00:01:55.184]I believe in complex medicines,
- [00:01:59.189]rather than refined medicines,
- [00:02:00.884]so kind of a homeopathic direction.
- [00:02:03.890]So, this is the area of my interest.
- [00:02:06.073]Beer's where it's going to make the money initially,
- [00:02:08.255]but we see some future in the antimicrobial,
- [00:02:11.529]as well as the medicinal values.
- [00:02:13.735]Now, for those of you that like to take the beer
- [00:02:15.894]and take a sniff of it,
- [00:02:17.298]it's the essential oils in there, which are really complex.
- [00:02:21.130]There's about 300 different compounds involved in that,
- [00:02:25.355]so it's not well-known on that.
- [00:02:27.248]But we can actually monitor these alpha and beta content.
- [00:02:31.814]There's a hops cone there on the upper left
- [00:02:34.762]that you can see there,
- [00:02:35.981]and on the right, I just stole that from the internet,
- [00:02:37.595]but I did put the link there so you can see it.
- [00:02:41.181]We're looking for that yellow compound,
- [00:02:42.935]which is the lupulin product.
- [00:02:45.919]Now, I've been growing it on campus
- [00:02:47.219]for a couple years here, to dabble with,
- [00:02:49.401]and establish whether or not we could even grow them,
- [00:02:52.919]and yes we could.
- [00:02:53.952]So, we wanted to look at the qualitative,
- [00:02:56.657]as well as the quantitative analysis
- [00:02:58.294]of how much we could produce.
- [00:02:59.954]So, this is what we're looking for, specifically, on it.
- [00:03:03.634]We've identified these six key varieties
- [00:03:06.211]that we're thinking what we'll be doing.
- [00:03:09.276]There's about 185 different types of hops,
- [00:03:12.910]but I wanted to look at these six key ones,
- [00:03:14.917]because, actually there's a top 10,
- [00:03:18.575]but these six will give us those alpha and betas
- [00:03:20.977]a little bit of variety in there.
- [00:03:22.835]And it will give me some alpha and beta contents
- [00:03:25.398]that are well-researched in current production,
- [00:03:29.438]and will give me something to compare against.
- [00:03:32.549]We've identified four growers across the state,
- [00:03:34.755]so we'll have one just outside of Lincoln,
- [00:03:36.891]one near Norfolk,
- [00:03:38.609]one near Sutton, Nebraska,
- [00:03:40.397]and then out at Scott's Bluff.
- [00:03:42.045]They're giving us a variety of elevations,
- [00:03:44.982]different types of soil types, and temperatures,
- [00:03:47.304]in order to determine whether there'll be
- [00:03:50.799]some characteristic differences because of them.
- [00:03:57.536]Just for those of you that have never seen hops,
- [00:03:59.238]we do have some on east campus.
- [00:04:00.699]I'm developing a new trellis,
- [00:04:02.197]and it's designed for home owner production,
- [00:04:04.449]because not only am I looking at the commercial side,
- [00:04:06.713]but I see that I can fill a niche for these homebrewers
- [00:04:10.695]that would like to grow some hops in their own backyard.
- [00:04:13.516]So, we've got a plot of, it would be 24 plants,
- [00:04:18.008]with a trellis system for homeowners.
- [00:04:20.156]So, that's kind of an extension site that I'm doing on it.
- [00:04:23.418]This is what a hops yard looks like.
- [00:04:26.379]We're concerned about the over-wintering.
- [00:04:27.922]It's actually a rhizome, so it's an underground stem.
- [00:04:31.475]It over-winters down there.
- [00:04:32.833]And if you look over here where I have the yellow dot,
- [00:04:34.702]you can see, it looks like asparagus
- [00:04:36.641]coming up in the spring.
- [00:04:37.720]So, this is in late March.
- [00:04:42.597]Here you can see our planting there on campus.
- [00:04:44.452]I just took this picture the other day,
- [00:04:46.008]so we are in the process of building a new trellis system.
- [00:04:49.026]We're gonna use a V-system on the trellising.
- [00:04:52.114]We have the plants planted about three feet apart,
- [00:04:54.215]which is fairly tight.
- [00:04:56.468]So, this is what we've been piloting here.
- [00:05:00.867]Our main project goals for this whole thing is one,
- [00:05:03.734]to develop some sort of baseline information for hops.
- [00:05:07.333]So, like I said, we know what the alphas and betas
- [00:05:09.249]should be.
- [00:05:10.329]We want to see, given these different types of soils,
- [00:05:13.202]nutrient situations, and temperatures,
- [00:05:15.355]whether or not is the plants are gonna be hardy.
- [00:05:17.793]Will it be able to come up from year to year?
- [00:05:19.767]And then qualitatively, can we reach those alpha and betas.
- [00:05:23.366]A big deal for anybody, whether it's for pharmaceutical
- [00:05:27.173]purposes, or as well as brewers, is consistency.
- [00:05:30.517]So, the project starts out as a three-year project.
- [00:05:33.117]First year is establishment.
- [00:05:34.382]Second and third year will start giving us some data.
- [00:05:38.097]And then, pending the success of that,
- [00:05:40.390]perhaps we can continue on and maybe expand it.
- [00:05:42.381]So, all right, thank you.
- [00:05:44.993](applause)
