- [00:00:01.206]We want to take a break from talking about our department
- [00:00:03.946]to brag a little bit.
- [00:00:07.115]We have a student award to have presented,
- [00:00:11.735]that really is kind of a big deal.
- [00:00:14.115]And to make that presentation,
- [00:00:16.530]we have Dr. Mike Stewart
- [00:00:17.865]with the International Plant and Nutrition Institute
- [00:00:20.372]to make the presentation.
- [00:00:21.708]So Mike, I turn it over to you.
- [00:00:29.532]Thanks, Richard.
- [00:00:31.088]And I wanna say I appreciate you all
- [00:00:35.530]setting aside a brief moment
- [00:00:39.482]in your program for this.
- [00:00:42.257]I think it's a worthy cause.
- [00:00:44.683]I'm with the International Plant and Nutrition Institute,
- [00:00:47.724]IPNI.
- [00:00:49.037]I'm one of the regional directors for the institute.
- [00:00:51.997]And before I actually present the award,
- [00:00:54.516]I wanna say a few things.
- [00:00:57.240]IPNI provides scholarships worldwide
- [00:01:02.186]to students working in the field of soil fertility
- [00:01:06.632]or crop nutrition.
- [00:01:08.628]And I was looking last night,
- [00:01:10.149]and I believe the count this year was 37
- [00:01:12.831]of these scholarships that we presented
- [00:01:15.571]in many countries across the world.
- [00:01:18.334]Among those 37, eight were awarded in North America,
- [00:01:22.953]the U.S. and Canada.
- [00:01:25.496]Among those eight, one is here at University of Nebraska.
- [00:01:31.706]I don't serve on the committee anymore,
- [00:01:33.251]but for many years, I served on the selection committee
- [00:01:36.757]for these scholarships.
- [00:01:39.358]And I can say, from experience,
- [00:01:41.539]that the competition for these is invariably very stiff.
- [00:01:45.835]Those that are awarded the scholarships
- [00:01:49.272]are among the best graduate students
- [00:01:51.152]in those fields of crop nutrition and soil fertility.
- [00:01:56.119]And certainly Zachary Stewart is no exception to that.
- [00:02:00.101]Last night, I was looking at his application,
- [00:02:02.144]and of the probably hundreds I've looked at
- [00:02:05.349]through the years,
- [00:02:06.197]his is among the very strongest I've ever seen.
- [00:02:09.796]He is outstanding.
- [00:02:11.990]His accomplishments are outstanding,
- [00:02:14.357]not only in academics,
- [00:02:17.451]or in scholarship,
- [00:02:19.883]but also with his research,
- [00:02:21.776]and probably most importantly,
- [00:02:24.643]his personal achievement.
- [00:02:27.453]And so, it is really a pleasure and an honor for me
- [00:02:30.959]to present this IPNI Scholar Award to Zachary.
- [00:02:35.672]And the award, you may wonder
- [00:02:39.467]what it consists of.
- [00:02:40.860]It consists of a nice certificate,
- [00:02:44.586]and probably most importantly, a $2000 check.
- [00:02:47.407]So, Zachary, please come forward.
- [00:02:51.239](applause)
- [00:03:03.800]I'd just like to briefly thank Dr. Stewart,
- [00:03:06.899]but also I'd like to take the opportunity
- [00:03:10.080]to thank my advisor, my major advisor, Dr. Shapiro.
- [00:03:14.283]So, I didn't originally come from an academic background
- [00:03:18.763]of agronomy.
- [00:03:20.203]I studied control of infectious diseases,
- [00:03:23.082]mosquitoes and malaria control.
- [00:03:25.497]But, Dr. Shapiro was very influential in my decision
- [00:03:29.734]to work in this field, and provided a great balance
- [00:03:34.656]of oversight, but also autonomy,
- [00:03:37.675]and the ability to take my interests and blend them
- [00:03:40.182]with plant nutrition.
- [00:03:41.819]So, thank you, to both of you.
- [00:03:45.174](applause)
- [00:03:52.662]I was visiting with Zach as he was planning to come here.
- [00:03:55.228]His background is really interesting.
- [00:03:58.223]Coming from London and Africa, Creighton University,
- [00:04:02.785]to now University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:05.048]So, just an example of the quality and the breadth
- [00:04:07.986]of the students that we have here.
- [00:04:10.969]Well, here before lunch,
- [00:04:11.968]we do want to emphasize and promote our students.
- [00:04:16.889]And I don't know the exact format,
- [00:04:19.837]and I think maybe I know who is talking,
- [00:04:22.646]so no particular order here.
- [00:04:26.582]So, if I get the names wrong or the order wrong,
- [00:04:30.297]correct me.
- [00:04:35.045]And I'm not sure whether you have presentations
- [00:04:36.565]or you're just coming up to give a talk
- [00:04:38.248]without presentations.
- [00:04:39.386]But we have several student organizations
- [00:04:41.092]that want to share briefly with you here ahead of lunch.
- [00:04:44.470]We'll start with Range, Range Science Club.
- [00:04:47.744]That's Amanda Hoffner? Hefner.
- [00:04:52.689]I cannot read my own writing.
- [00:04:55.163]Anyway, Amanda, we'll turn it over to you.
- [00:05:22.687]Like he said, I'm Amanda Hefner.
- [00:05:24.347]I'm a graduate student here
- [00:05:27.365]in the School of Natural Resources
- [00:05:28.980]and I'm in the Range Management Club.
- [00:05:31.673]The Range Management Club is a unique club
- [00:05:34.121]where we have a group of undergraduates
- [00:05:36.605]and graduate students involved.
- [00:05:39.241]We all have interests, obviously in range management,
- [00:05:41.887]but we all explore different facets
- [00:05:44.621]of landscape management.
- [00:05:47.523]We have students that are really interested
- [00:05:48.962]in wildlife with management.
- [00:05:51.546]We have students that really look at landscape matrices.
- [00:05:56.102]And then we also have students that explore
- [00:06:00.525]the normal cattle utilization of range management side.
- [00:06:05.182]I'll just talk about some of our events that we do.
- [00:06:08.035]So, this past fall semester,
- [00:06:09.591]we actually did a trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo,
- [00:06:12.760]where we actually looked at their rare plant species
- [00:06:16.952]research stuff that they're doing there,
- [00:06:18.751]and actually got a behind-the-scenes tour
- [00:06:20.469]of how the zoo was working to increase
- [00:06:24.997]these rare species,
- [00:06:25.960]and the kind of management that they want to implement.
- [00:06:29.095]And we also looked at lions and tigers and bears.
- [00:06:34.760]Oh my!
- [00:06:37.220]We also participated at the Nebraska Section Meeting,
- [00:06:41.017]which was in North Platt.
- [00:06:41.980]We had graduates and undergraduates present
- [00:06:45.359]there in North Platt,
- [00:06:46.682]and that also led to our international meeting
- [00:06:50.095]in Sacramento.
- [00:06:51.940]So, I think it's really unique with Range Club
- [00:06:55.853]that we have undergraduates and graduate students
- [00:06:58.279]who work together.
- [00:07:00.137]In fact, a lot of our undergraduates become the technicians
- [00:07:02.215]for our graduate students.
- [00:07:03.758]And so, when we do present research,
- [00:07:05.639]we have a fuller, more complete story,
- [00:07:08.472]because we have undergraduates
- [00:07:09.552]who do a lot of UCare Projects.
- [00:07:11.491]And so, they really complement the graduate students'
- [00:07:14.717]research that they present.
- [00:07:16.935]And so, it just gives a stronger story,
- [00:07:19.269]and I think it really shows that we have a great program
- [00:07:21.439]here at UNL in the Range Department.
- [00:07:23.936]But anyway, the important news
- [00:07:26.014]that you should get out of this presentation
- [00:07:28.173]is that in Sacramento
- [00:07:29.229]at the International Society of Range Management meeting
- [00:07:32.537]last January, our URME teams,
- [00:07:35.928]or Undergraduate Range Management Exam team,
- [00:07:38.633]placed first out of basically all of North America.
- [00:07:43.055]That was really led by Dr. Walt Schact,
- [00:07:46.294]so you should all congratulate him,
- [00:07:47.908]because he would love it.
- [00:07:50.532]Yes, you should give him applause.
- [00:07:52.389](applause)
- [00:07:54.606]And that is our team, our URME team right there.
- [00:07:57.811]We also have students compete in Plant ID.
- [00:08:00.307]And we also had research presentations that were given
- [00:08:03.336]and extemp speaking.
- [00:08:05.206]But, research that was presented,
- [00:08:06.935]some were animal activity due to strategic grazing.
- [00:08:12.008]We had students discuss resilience of the sand hills.
- [00:08:15.305]And, we had some that even talked about dung beetles
- [00:08:18.567]and nutrient cycling.
- [00:08:20.133]So, lots of different areas of range management covered.
- [00:08:25.078]In the spring, we toured the Bluestem Valley Farms,
- [00:08:28.630]and we looked at how they manage their area
- [00:08:33.274]and their conservation easements that they implement there.
- [00:08:36.676]So, that was really important.
- [00:08:39.032]And, I think that a lot of people really enjoyed that tour.
- [00:08:41.678]We also went to the Agronomy
- [00:08:43.095]and Horticulture Department Banquet,
- [00:08:45.916]and had some awards presented.
- [00:08:48.458]And so, there's the picture of our group.
- [00:08:53.149]And then we also helped with CASNR Week,
- [00:08:54.751]and did community night where local kids come
- [00:08:57.432]and help, and it was a lot of fun.
- [00:09:00.847]I'd really like to thank the Department of Agronomy
- [00:09:03.886]and Horticulture and CASNR for all their support.
- [00:09:06.626]Our Range Club is kind of small,
- [00:09:08.785]but we do a lot of important things
- [00:09:10.899]and really go to a lot of opportunities
- [00:09:15.344]where we can talk to stakeholders and landowners
- [00:09:17.666]and really make an impact in this state.
- [00:09:20.185]So, thank you.
- [00:09:21.881](applause)
- [00:09:30.778]Thanks, Amanda.
- [00:09:32.474]Next up is Turf, is that right?
- [00:09:35.515]Jeff Linehan?
- [00:09:43.144]Hi, I'll try to keep this fast,
- [00:09:44.328]because like all of you, I'm hungry, too.
- [00:09:48.588]First off, I wanted to address Keenan over there.
- [00:09:52.059]Keenan might be a little shocked to see me.
- [00:09:54.323]I'm supposed to be in his class right now.
- [00:09:58.467]So, we both skipped.
- [00:09:59.408]That might be a first time ever,
- [00:10:00.731]but, yeah, so, sorry.
- [00:10:04.689]Yeah, but my name is Jeff Linehan
- [00:10:07.174]and I'm a junior in the Turf Grass Management major.
- [00:10:10.795]I am also the Vice-President of the Turf Club
- [00:10:13.919]here on campus.
- [00:10:15.103]Throughout the years, I've really seen it grow.
- [00:10:17.842]It's been quite incredible, actually,
- [00:10:20.362]how much more we've done since my freshman year,
- [00:10:23.264]all the way up to this year.
- [00:10:26.294]My freshman year, I came in,
- [00:10:28.024]I didn't really know a lot of people.
- [00:10:29.858]So, Turf Club was a good way to meet people
- [00:10:33.921]who were in my major, including upperclassmen.
- [00:10:40.192]I got involved, started to get involved last year
- [00:10:41.967]a little bit more.
- [00:10:42.826]I became the secretary of the Turf Club,
- [00:10:44.950]and this year I'm now the Vice-President.
- [00:10:48.410]We have a purpose statement,
- [00:10:49.803]and I'll just kind of run through it real quick.
- [00:10:52.089]There's about three parts,
- [00:10:53.356]and it will give you a little feel of what we're all about.
- [00:10:58.983]The first part of our purpose statement
- [00:11:01.874]is to serve as an official organization
- [00:11:04.440]for students interested in turf grass management,
- [00:11:06.959]and to provide them with information
- [00:11:08.294]about career direction and credentials needed
- [00:11:10.964]to become a part of the industry.
- [00:11:14.253]One of the biggest things we do in Turf Club
- [00:11:15.724]is we have two or three meetings a month,
- [00:11:18.751]and we invite speakers to come in from different companies.
- [00:11:21.920]We've had a representative from Toro.
- [00:11:23.789]We've had Larry Ryan from Ryan Lawn and Tree.
- [00:11:27.690]And I know a lot of you know him,
- [00:11:29.350]but Zach Ryker from Bayer.
- [00:11:31.811]He abandoned us, but he came back and talked to us
- [00:11:34.214]for a little bit, so that was really nice.
- [00:11:37.070]Each of these people bring us kind of their career paths
- [00:11:41.307]and how they got into the industry,
- [00:11:43.153]and what they've done to further their careers.
- [00:11:46.647]But, it also gives us an opportunity
- [00:11:48.691]to connect with them,
- [00:11:50.351]and possibly provide some future internships or employment
- [00:11:54.854]within their companies, or companies that they know of.
- [00:12:02.134]The second kind of part of our purpose statement
- [00:12:05.314]is to promote and advance the profession
- [00:12:07.927]and enrich the quality of turf and our environment.
- [00:12:12.547]The way we do this is,
- [00:12:14.149]one of the other biggest things we do every year is
- [00:12:16.633]we attend the Golf Course Superintendents Association
- [00:12:19.535]meeting, as well as
- [00:12:20.673]the Sports Turf Managers Association meeting.
- [00:12:23.773]And these are basically two to three-day conferences.
- [00:12:26.710]We go there, sit in on sessions,
- [00:12:30.460]meet a lot of people in the industry,
- [00:12:32.642]and we also take part in the student challenge there.
- [00:12:35.277]It's mostly a quiz bowl and we compete against
- [00:12:38.737]usually 75 to 100 teams around the nation
- [00:12:41.837]from Big Ten schools, SEC schools.
- [00:12:45.400]So, it kind of gives us a mix of what everyone's doing
- [00:12:47.595]around the country.
- [00:12:50.497]With that, we do a lot of fundraising, as well,
- [00:12:52.598]to raise money, because airfare and hotels, not cheap.
- [00:12:59.441]We went to a golf tournament a couple weeks ago
- [00:13:03.941]and sold mulligans there.
- [00:13:05.403]We've done kind of a fundraiser with Noodles and Company
- [00:13:08.840]in the past.
- [00:13:09.873]We did that for a few years.
- [00:13:11.835]And we're always looking for new ways to fundraise,
- [00:13:16.072]to promote our trip out there.
- [00:13:23.989]Along with enriching the turf industry,
- [00:13:27.437]we have a Twitter page now
- [00:13:30.687]that's dedicated to the UNL Turf Club.
- [00:13:33.683]About before a week ago,
- [00:13:35.125]we hadn't tweeted on there since 2014,
- [00:13:37.307]but we're resurrecting it from the dead.
- [00:13:39.687]So, if you wanna go follow that,
- [00:13:42.090]it's @UNLTurf, Turf Club.
- [00:13:47.024]I guess the third part of our purpose statement
- [00:13:49.137]is to provide an avenue for an exchange of information
- [00:13:52.085]and ideas between students and professionals
- [00:13:54.024]in the industry.
- [00:13:55.742]Like I said, we've done that with speakers.
- [00:13:57.646]We do that through Twitter and Instagram.
- [00:14:02.065]We also connect at the GCSA and the STMA conferences.
- [00:14:06.167]We connect with students from around the country.
- [00:14:09.650]There's also professional turf grass industry
- [00:14:13.436]members there.
- [00:14:15.152]And one thing that's new that we did this year,
- [00:14:17.172]actually a couple Sundays ago,
- [00:14:19.111]was we had a golf tournament versus K State,
- [00:14:20.817]like Anne mentioned earlier.
- [00:14:22.814]And I regret to say that we lost,
- [00:14:24.509]but it was a hard fought battle out at Hillcrest.
- [00:14:28.119]But, we are looking forward to going down to Manhattan
- [00:14:30.058]in the spring and beating them down there.
- [00:14:35.049]So, that's kind of the three-pronged approach
- [00:14:37.569]of our purpose statement.
- [00:14:39.032]And I'll just finish off with how do we benefit as students
- [00:14:42.468]through this organization?
- [00:14:47.048]Personally, and I know through many other people,
- [00:14:49.132]it definitely gives us career advice and career help.
- [00:14:53.415]There's a lot of different avenues you can go through
- [00:14:55.227]with the Turf Club.
- [00:14:57.026]It just kind of points you to what you're interested in
- [00:14:59.115]and helps you out with that.
- [00:15:01.192]You also get connections through the conferences.
- [00:15:04.755]My dad always said a lot of the times,
- [00:15:07.287]it's not what you know, it's who you know.
- [00:15:09.330]And it's just really important, I think,
- [00:15:10.839]to build relationships,
- [00:15:13.027]and to never burn any bridges,
- [00:15:14.659]because you never know when someone could give you
- [00:15:17.538]an avenue for a job or an internship.
- [00:15:22.077]And another way it does it is
- [00:15:23.958]it helps us get together outside of class and stay involved.
- [00:15:27.290]Like I said, when I was a freshman, I came in,
- [00:15:29.878]and I didn't really know anyone in my major.
- [00:15:31.632]So, it really helped me to connect with the seniors
- [00:15:33.652]and the juniors, and establish a relationship.
- [00:15:36.135]And I still talk to those people today
- [00:15:37.994]as they're out in their current jobs.
- [00:15:40.153]And I know they've been talking back and forth
- [00:15:42.347]about getting us out there for internships.
- [00:15:44.088]So, it's really just to connect us all
- [00:15:46.050]and help us further the program here at UNL.
- [00:15:50.508]So, that's basically all I have for the Turf Club.
- [00:15:53.886]Yeah, follow us on Twitter, if you want.
- [00:15:55.186]Thank you.
- [00:15:56.788](applause)
- [00:16:02.034]Thank you, Jeff.
- [00:16:03.718]Next up is our Agronomy and Horticulture
- [00:16:05.841]Graduate Student Association, Leah Ruff.
- [00:16:10.195]Good morning, or maybe it's afternoon now,
- [00:16:12.076]I don't know.
- [00:16:13.062]My name is Leah Ruff, and I'm the President
- [00:16:15.082]of the Agronomy and Horticulture
- [00:16:16.697]Graduate Student Association.
- [00:16:18.658]It's a long name, so we usually just say AHGSA.
- [00:16:22.118]To give you a scope of the students in our club,
- [00:16:25.182]a lot of them are international,
- [00:16:27.098]so we have students from Eucador, Brazil,
- [00:16:30.233]India, China, Nigeria, Colombia.
- [00:16:35.132]I even cross the river from Iowa.
- [00:16:39.305]We have monthly business meetings,
- [00:16:41.424]and at those meetings we try to give opportunities
- [00:16:43.583]for the students to give research presentations
- [00:16:46.787]or have career development speakers come in.
- [00:16:50.467]This last meeting, we had a speaker from career services
- [00:16:53.392]talk about transferable skills
- [00:16:55.749]after you leave graduate school
- [00:16:57.862]and are in the industry or academia.
- [00:17:01.182]with your job.
- [00:17:03.828]And we enjoy that with food and lots of networking.
- [00:17:06.789]And we also, our club tries to strive to help new students
- [00:17:10.446]in their transition into graduate school.
- [00:17:13.471]So, we now newly offer a mentor program.
- [00:17:16.169]Each new student is paired with a mentor
- [00:17:19.327]from our organization that has volunteered.
- [00:17:22.485]We also have an orientation in the fall and spring
- [00:17:25.770]in partnership with the department
- [00:17:27.627]to welcome students and give helpful resources,
- [00:17:30.611]and also a tour of Keim and Plant Science Hall.
- [00:17:34.245]We also do a lot of fun and social
- [00:17:36.925]and fundraising activities.
- [00:17:39.259]A lot of times they're a theme to the month or the season.
- [00:17:42.974]So to give some examples, we have a fall barbecue.
- [00:17:45.690]We also do a winter white elephant gift exchange,
- [00:17:48.906]which is fun to teach the international students,
- [00:17:51.390]because they might not know
- [00:17:52.191]what that gift exchange is all about.
- [00:17:55.836]We also do pumpkin painting and ice skating.
- [00:18:00.167]We put on things like a chili cook-off competition
- [00:18:03.173]in our club meetings.
- [00:18:04.125]And, as you saw, a department banquet.
- [00:18:07.109]We help to organize that.
- [00:18:10.893]And just to tell you, we were pretty busy this summer
- [00:18:13.111]with lots of tours of industry.
- [00:18:15.351]We went to York, Nebraska for multiple trips
- [00:18:18.544]to visit DuPont Pioneers Research Station,
- [00:18:21.817]and also DelAgra Sciences and Mycogen's plant
- [00:18:26.275]out there in York, Nebraska.
- [00:18:28.295]We also toured a apple orchard in Ceresco,
- [00:18:31.871]Martin's Orchard.
- [00:18:33.287]And a pecan co-op in Valparaiso.
- [00:18:36.595]So, we have some neat opportunities
- [00:18:37.895]for students to branch out of Lincoln
- [00:18:40.356]and learn about things that are available in Nebraska
- [00:18:43.281]and develop those career skills and meeting people.
- [00:18:48.174]And I just wanted to wrap up with,
- [00:18:49.550]we have something new this year
- [00:18:50.896]where Dr. Oscar Rodriguez,
- [00:18:53.010]I don't know if he's here, but thank you.
- [00:18:55.575]He offers us the opportunity to pick sweet corn
- [00:18:59.290]and we then pick it and bring it to the department
- [00:19:02.610]and give it out, and we take donations.
- [00:19:05.130]And we've had a lot of fun picking it
- [00:19:06.650]and giving it out,
- [00:19:08.009]and we really appreciate all of the funds
- [00:19:09.866]so we can do trips like go to York, Nebraska
- [00:19:12.966]and learn about agriculture opportunities.
- [00:19:15.763]I think that's all I have.
- [00:19:19.931](applause)
- [00:19:25.689]Thank you, Leah.
- [00:19:27.592]Next up is the Agronomy Club.
- [00:19:30.124]Amanda Vodvarka is the president of that.
- [00:19:32.527]Amanda, would you like to,
- [00:19:34.024]it may be a team effort,
- [00:19:35.046]so, I'll turn it over to you.
- [00:19:46.469]Hi everyone, my name is Amanda Vodvarka,
- [00:19:48.291]and he already said, I'm the President
- [00:19:50.729]of the Agronomy Club.
- [00:19:52.749]And I'm Brad Meusch.
- [00:19:54.027]I'm the treasurer of the Agronomy Club.
- [00:19:56.325]So, the mission of our Agronomy Club,
- [00:19:58.310]this year in particular,
- [00:19:59.912]is to grow our members as professionals in the industry.
- [00:20:03.070]So, a couple of ways of how we are doing that this year
- [00:20:05.275]is that, as Anne already mentioned,
- [00:20:07.249]we are taking our students out on tours
- [00:20:09.315]to learn more about the industry.
- [00:20:11.405]We are also,
- [00:20:13.089]we prepare them for career fairs
- [00:20:14.505]by having speakers come in
- [00:20:15.852]and kind of inform our students
- [00:20:17.372]about what is best to have on your resume,
- [00:20:21.133]what's a proper attire to wear to a career fair
- [00:20:23.792]and for an interview,
- [00:20:24.744]and what kind of questions to expect in an interview.
- [00:20:27.844]We also offer our members speakers that also come in
- [00:20:31.871]and talk about current issues
- [00:20:33.532]that are impacting them directly
- [00:20:35.586]when it comes to their industry.
- [00:20:38.083]We usually go to the regional SASIS conference.
- [00:20:41.247]So, this year that is in Texas.
- [00:20:42.466]And that is a great opportunity for our students
- [00:20:44.265]to learn about, not only agriculture in Nebraska,
- [00:20:47.468]but also elsewhere in the United States,
- [00:20:49.828]and to get to know other students, too.
- [00:20:52.694]Crops judging is another great opportunity that we offer.
- [00:20:56.027]It allows our members to learn,
- [00:20:59.034]not only about what they learn in the classroom,
- [00:21:01.530]but to also apply that to real-life situations, too.
- [00:21:06.150]And lastly, there is our Emeriti banquet,
- [00:21:08.727]which is kind of a new thing,
- [00:21:09.844]a new annual incorporation that we were trying.
- [00:21:13.339]So, you all should have hopefully gotten invitations
- [00:21:15.916]for that.
- [00:21:18.714]So, to kind of go off what she was talking about
- [00:21:20.893]and what Dr. Ferguson said about we kind of have
- [00:21:23.517]a team effort here.
- [00:21:24.566]So, as officers this year, we kind of talked a little bit,
- [00:21:27.840]and one thing we wanted to do was really build the club.
- [00:21:31.206]And actually, since I started the Agronomy Club,
- [00:21:34.445]we had probably, I don't know, 15 to 18 active members.
- [00:21:38.845]And then, as of last year, we had 30.
- [00:21:40.703]Well, this year we have 71.
- [00:21:43.698]So, I mean, (applause)
- [00:21:46.623]thank you.
- [00:21:49.375]So, we've kind of really fulfilled
- [00:21:50.896]what we wanted to do as officers this year
- [00:21:53.247]and really get people involved in the club,
- [00:21:55.540]and not just take it as,
- [00:21:56.660]"Well, I'm just getting my degree here,
- [00:21:58.123]"let's get involved and meet other students."
- [00:22:00.143]And also to build themselves as professionals
- [00:22:03.783]in where they're going to go,
- [00:22:05.042]whether in industry or research.
- [00:22:06.482]So, I honestly think that we have done a great job this year
- [00:22:09.616]and still looking for next semester
- [00:22:11.323]to add more people to the members.
- [00:22:16.105]So, as a lot of people already touched on,
- [00:22:17.719]you know, the Agronomy Club for me and Brad,
- [00:22:19.924]it's been one of the most beneficial opportunities
- [00:22:22.664]that we could have ever had.
- [00:22:24.162]So, that's why we've worked so hard this year
- [00:22:26.298]to try and improve our club,
- [00:22:28.922]which has greatly shown.
- [00:22:31.905]Because of that, just touching a little bit on it,
- [00:22:34.959]we've only touched on a few highlights of our club.
- [00:22:37.954]So, if you have any further questions,
- [00:22:39.498]we're gonna be sticking around for a little bit afterwards.
- [00:22:42.621]But, we really would like to thank all of you
- [00:22:44.977]for giving us opportunity to come in
- [00:22:46.475]and talk to you about our club.
- [00:22:49.354](applause)
- [00:22:56.620]Very good, thanks.
- [00:22:58.640]Two more.
- [00:23:00.812]Pi Alpha Xi, Emily Stein.
- [00:23:04.898]Emily, turn it over to you.
- [00:23:07.673]Do you have a presentation?
- [00:23:37.020]Good afternoon, my name is Emily Stein.
- [00:23:39.133]I'm a senior landscape management major.
- [00:23:41.837]I'm also the President of Pi Alpha Xi.
- [00:23:45.472]For those of you who don't know,
- [00:23:48.132]Pi Alpha Xi is an honor society,
- [00:23:52.322]honors horticulturist society.
- [00:23:54.680]And our main mission is to unify students,
- [00:23:56.978]educators, and professional horticulturists,
- [00:23:59.880]and to promote high scholarship,
- [00:24:01.622]fellowship, professional leadership,
- [00:24:03.584]and enrichment of human life through plants.
- [00:24:06.137]So, we do a number of different activities
- [00:24:07.751]throughout the year.
- [00:24:09.249]We kind of stay low key.
- [00:24:11.013]We know a lot of our members are involved
- [00:24:12.372]in other organizations.
- [00:24:15.297]So, just to give you a brief history
- [00:24:16.969]over what Pi Alpha Xi is,
- [00:24:18.617]we are a National Honor Society for Horticulture,
- [00:24:21.473]founded in 1923 at Cornell University.
- [00:24:24.515]And there are over 40 chapters across the country.
- [00:24:28.671]At UNL we were established in 1982.
- [00:24:33.012]Our advisors are currently Dr. Ellen Paparozzi
- [00:24:35.996]and Dave Wham.
- [00:24:40.373]The big thing we do every year, so far,
- [00:24:43.751]is our winter wreath making class.
- [00:24:46.550]We invite in members of the community to come in
- [00:24:50.044]and have fun, enjoy cider,
- [00:24:51.809]and make beautiful live wreaths around Christmastime.
- [00:24:56.010]All of the funds that we acquire from this event
- [00:25:00.132]go to our scholarship that we award at the end of the year.
- [00:25:03.824]And this year, putting the plug in,
- [00:25:06.470]it's December 5, 2015, obviously,
- [00:25:09.943]because that's this year.
- [00:25:11.648]So, if you're interested, feel free to contact Dr. Paparozzi
- [00:25:18.391]and we can get you the form for that.
- [00:25:22.932]The other award that we present at the end of the year
- [00:25:26.543]is the President's Citation.
- [00:25:28.505]This is an award given to an individual
- [00:25:31.083]in the horticultural industry
- [00:25:32.766]that we feel has had a large impact.
- [00:25:34.786]The really cool thing about this award
- [00:25:38.988]is that it is nominated by the students
- [00:25:40.950]and chosen by the students.
- [00:25:43.991]We partner with the horticulture club
- [00:25:45.547]to choose the recipient.
- [00:25:46.685]Last year was Todd Foller,
- [00:25:49.088]and the year before that was Dr. Reed.
- [00:25:53.109]And that concludes our presentation,
- [00:25:54.672]so thank you and have a good rest of your day.
- [00:25:57.110](applause)
- [00:26:06.827]Thanks, Emily.
- [00:26:09.114]And last before lunch is Emily,
- [00:26:12.492]or Kara Sousek is with the Horticulture Club.
- [00:26:17.135]Kara?
- [00:26:21.314]Hello, I'm Kara Sousek,
- [00:26:22.812]President of the Horticulture Club this year.
- [00:26:25.192]Basically what Horticulture Club does
- [00:26:27.665]is we have members that come in to work
- [00:26:29.766]semester-wide.
- [00:26:32.204]We put on two sales a year.
- [00:26:33.551]In the fall semester, we put on a poinsettia sale.
- [00:26:37.671]That's coming up about the second week of December.
- [00:26:41.874]And then in the spring, we do a spring bedding plant sale
- [00:26:44.973]that we host in our teaching greenhouse.
- [00:26:48.572]And we sell spring bedding plants and vegetables.
- [00:26:52.346]The proceeds that we earn from those sales
- [00:26:55.410]we use for two things.
- [00:26:56.791]We use for outreach and for traveling.
- [00:26:59.949]We go on trips every year as a club.
- [00:27:03.710]In the past, we've gone to Chicago,
- [00:27:06.021]to Florida, Denver,
- [00:27:08.401]and this year we went to Minnesota.
- [00:27:10.061]We toured the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
- [00:27:14.368]In the past, we went to Florida.
- [00:27:17.282]And on these trips, we tour different horticultural
- [00:27:20.148]industries and do a little bit of networking.
- [00:27:23.818]And actually, on the Florida trip,
- [00:27:25.396]we toured Disney Epcot.
- [00:27:27.695]They had kind of a greenhouse production there,
- [00:27:31.491]as one of their attractions.
- [00:27:33.523]One of our past Hort Club presidents
- [00:27:35.984]actually learned about internship through them
- [00:27:39.646]and applied and was accepted
- [00:27:42.486]for this very prestigious internship
- [00:27:44.377]down at Disney Epcot.
- [00:27:46.977]So, we do a little bit of networking on these trips.
- [00:27:49.601]And also, the proceeds from these sales,
- [00:27:51.760]we use for outreach.
- [00:27:52.944]And we've done different forms of outreach in the past.
- [00:27:56.938]Some of the things we're looking at doing this year
- [00:27:58.877]are doing some youth outreach,
- [00:28:01.582]maybe through partnering with a community garden
- [00:28:03.880]in Lincoln, maybe offering a workshop,
- [00:28:06.039]and just providing educational services
- [00:28:09.940]to youth in Lincoln.
- [00:28:11.856]And we are also investigating
- [00:28:13.156]looking into partnering with maybe a county 4H program,
- [00:28:17.161]to donate some of the vegetables that we raise
- [00:28:19.494]for our spring sale,
- [00:28:21.537]donate that to
- [00:28:24.273]a 4H county program
- [00:28:27.814]and really hope to
- [00:28:31.709]inspire some curiosity
- [00:28:33.996]and a passion for horticulture in today's youth.
- [00:28:37.955]So, that's kind of a rundown of Horticulture Club.
- [00:28:40.590]If you're interested in supporting us,
- [00:28:43.898]you can like us on Facebook.
- [00:28:45.152]We have a very active Facebook page.
- [00:28:49.750]We convey a lot of our information about our sales
- [00:28:52.326]on our Facebook page.
- [00:28:53.441]So, if you need a poinsettia for this Christmas,
- [00:28:56.204]like us on Facebook and come find us.
- [00:28:58.584]Thank you.
- [00:29:00.046](applause)
