- [00:00:01.015]Alright, so I briefly want to talk about recruitment
- [00:00:03.394]in our four department majors.
- [00:00:05.113]So, we have Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Biology,
- [00:00:07.759]and Turf and Landscape Management
- [00:00:09.454]that really are associated with our department.
- [00:00:12.158]This is a graph.
- [00:00:13.215]Every great recruitment talk needs a graph
- [00:00:15.073]and so it kind of tells you where we have been
- [00:00:18.114]and where we currently are
- [00:00:20.157]and so you can see that we've had great growth.
- [00:00:22.073]The last eight years, 2008 to 2015, to actually 2014.
- [00:00:26.657]We've grown quite a bit.
- [00:00:28.537]If you look at this last year, this last fall,
- [00:00:30.557]we did drop down a few students,
- [00:00:32.554]but if you take a broader view at that,
- [00:00:34.319]look at the whole picture from 2008 to 2015
- [00:00:37.812]our department has grown over 73 percent
- [00:00:40.912]so that's like quite a large increase
- [00:00:43.095]in just undergraduate student numbers.
- [00:00:45.672]If you want to take a look at our numbers,
- [00:00:47.472]it did drop in 2015, but we can kind of explain that
- [00:00:52.161]if we go back and look at the data, between 2010
- [00:00:55.378]and 2011, we had an enormous growth
- [00:00:58.093]in undergraduate students in our department.
- [00:01:00.462]We increased by 61 students.
- [00:01:02.783]That's a lot of students for one year.
- [00:01:06.115]Lot of gain right there and so as all good students do,
- [00:01:08.960]they graduate and so those students coming in
- [00:01:11.432]in the fall of 2011, they graduated in May of 2015
- [00:01:15.402]and so as a result, we didn't see that a huge class
- [00:01:18.336]coming back in and so that is kind of the result
- [00:01:20.496]of why we have maybe a smaller class this fall,
- [00:01:24.617]but thinking, going back and looking at the broad picture,
- [00:01:26.857]our growth has been very very tremendous
- [00:01:28.980]over the last eight years.
- [00:01:33.196]There are a number of ways that we reach our students
- [00:01:35.075]and we know that all of our students are very connected
- [00:01:37.640]to the internet nowadays and so,
- [00:01:39.777]one of the first things that they do is they don't call us
- [00:01:42.401]right away, they go to the internet,
- [00:01:44.096]they go to our website and they look and see
- [00:01:45.846]what do we have, what does the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:48.062]have in an area that I am interested in
- [00:01:50.326]and so, what we've done over the last couple years is
- [00:01:52.590]really try to emphasize that those common issues,
- [00:01:56.085]those common questions that students have,
- [00:01:58.220]students and their parents for that matter
- [00:02:00.229]and so on our website we have information,
- [00:02:02.899]very specific to each of our majors.
- [00:02:05.266]That's the common questions.
- [00:02:07.323]So, what am I going to do once I graduate?
- [00:02:09.481]Am I going to be able to get a job?
- [00:02:11.060]Are their scholarship dollars in your department?
- [00:02:13.267]What type of internships are out there for me?
- [00:02:15.703]So, we try to get that information out there
- [00:02:18.061]so they can review that by themselves
- [00:02:20.545]and kind of peak their interest
- [00:02:22.564]and then that next step is for us to contact them
- [00:02:25.398]or them to contact us and get them onto campus.
- [00:02:29.681]One of the things that we do have on our website
- [00:02:32.165]and that I use during our campus visits
- [00:02:33.965]is this information sheet.
- [00:02:35.566]We have this sheet that is associated
- [00:02:37.599]with each of our majors.
- [00:02:39.084]So, we have four sheets that are very specific
- [00:02:41.941]and what we try to do with this is really connect
- [00:02:45.342]our current students to our perspective students.
- [00:02:48.801]So, we have examples of our current students.
- [00:02:51.285]Have quotes from them.
- [00:02:52.284]Have information about everything they've
- [00:02:54.427]been involved with.
- [00:02:55.332]Some of the clubs.
- [00:02:56.110]Some of the internships.
- [00:02:57.608]If they've graduated.
- [00:02:58.665]Where are they now?
- [00:03:00.053]So it just kind of gives them that additional information.
- [00:03:02.932]It also connects our future students to our students
- [00:03:07.540]that are already on campus,
- [00:03:09.257]because a lot of times when
- [00:03:10.255]I have a student sitting in my office,
- [00:03:12.343]they'll say oh Amanda, I know Amanda.
- [00:03:14.502]She was two years older than I am
- [00:03:16.338]and oh she's doing really well here.
- [00:03:18.776]That gives them a bit of a comfort level,
- [00:03:20.761]knowing someone that they knew in high school
- [00:03:23.314]or competed against in FFA or athletic events,
- [00:03:26.657]that they're here and they'll have someone
- [00:03:28.957]that they know and that that person has succeeded.
- [00:03:33.547]So, one of the things, so after they have this information.
- [00:03:37.214]We're trying to use social media as well.
- [00:03:39.302]So we have Twitter and Facebook and Instagram accounts
- [00:03:42.274]that we really use to not only reach the students,
- [00:03:46.082]but the students, the people who are influencing
- [00:03:48.439]our potential students.
- [00:03:49.959]So, their parents, their teachers, community members,
- [00:03:52.919]employers, and so hopefully they're seeing
- [00:03:54.952]some of the cool things that our students are doing.
- [00:03:57.413]So, we're putting that information out.
- [00:03:59.317]We're putting student awards out there.
- [00:04:02.498]We're putting what some of the club activities are doing.
- [00:04:04.900]What are we doing in our classrooms?
- [00:04:07.198]Hoping to get those students interested in coming here
- [00:04:09.974]and so our Instagram account, really is completely focused
- [00:04:13.735]to undergraduate recruitment and in here
- [00:04:16.197]we really highlight some of the neat things
- [00:04:18.112]that our students are doing.
- [00:04:19.134]So, for example, had a student at Augusta National
- [00:04:21.455]this last summer from January through June
- [00:04:24.728]and so that's a great internship
- [00:04:26.817]and so trying to promote that to other students.
- [00:04:29.175]Our clubs are doing phenomenal things.
- [00:04:31.658]We have Turf Club doing, they challenged K State
- [00:04:35.119]to a golf match, a Rider Club golf match.
- [00:04:37.533]Our Agronomy Club went to our research facility
- [00:04:40.528]to learn more about what's going on up there.
- [00:04:42.769]Our Hort Club, they take a ton of trips.
- [00:04:45.277]So, if we can get our future students excited
- [00:04:47.715]about what our current students are doing,
- [00:04:49.816]hopefully that will increase our student enrollment
- [00:04:52.451]in the long term.
- [00:04:56.607]So, once we get them excited.
- [00:04:57.849]We're hoping to get them on campus.
- [00:04:59.334]If we can get them on campus
- [00:05:00.507]we have a great chance of getting them to apply to UNL
- [00:05:04.072]and actually enroll in one of our departmental majors.
- [00:05:06.788]So, we do have group visits.
- [00:05:08.971]I'd like to have those visits tenth grade and younger
- [00:05:12.732]if they're doing individual groups,
- [00:05:14.636]I want to see them, they're junior and senior year.
- [00:05:17.514]I want to get them on campus.
- [00:05:18.792]I see over 100 students.
- [00:05:20.511]A 100 juniors and seniors each year individually
- [00:05:24.108]and that's where I can really meet with them
- [00:05:25.932]and see where their interests are
- [00:05:28.009]and be very specific to what they want to do.
- [00:05:31.052]Tell them how they'd fit in best here
- [00:05:33.895]and finally, one of our best recruiting opportunities
- [00:05:37.274]is to get to know them.
- [00:05:38.725]Tell them what we do and how we teach
- [00:05:41.336]and so we have some teaching gardens
- [00:05:42.776]that we utilize quite a bit.
- [00:05:44.576]When I take students out there,
- [00:05:45.759]they are very very excited.
- [00:05:47.095]Their parents are very very excited about what they see,
- [00:05:50.020]because they're working with real plants.
- [00:05:52.272]They're just not looking at PowerPoint presentations
- [00:05:54.316]like we are today.
- [00:05:55.673]But they get to go outside and actually feel
- [00:05:57.416]and look and use those plants.
- [00:05:59.017]So, it's a great opportunity that they see
- [00:06:01.675]and they want to be here on campus with us.
- [00:06:05.799]So, if you know of a perspective student,
- [00:06:07.679]please have them contact me
- [00:06:09.955]or let me know about them.
- [00:06:11.917]A lot of times people will give me a call
- [00:06:13.438]and say Anne, I have this great student working for me.
- [00:06:15.980]Do you think you could contact him or her
- [00:06:18.418]and tell them all about the university.
- [00:06:20.833]I'm more than happy to do that
- [00:06:22.272]and appreciate your help.
- [00:06:24.873](audience applauds)
