- [00:00:00.884]Okay, so as Richard said, my name is Leah Sandall.
- [00:00:03.229]And I'm the Distance Education Coordinator
- [00:00:04.878]in the department.
- [00:00:05.946]And since this is a fast break, I'm gonna give you just
- [00:00:07.908]some highlights of some of the things that
- [00:00:09.441]we're doing currently in online and distance education
- [00:00:11.832]in the department.
- [00:00:12.880]And highlight some of the things that we're
- [00:00:14.714]excited about that we've developed over the last
- [00:00:16.084]couple of years.
- [00:00:19.165]So the first thing I wanted to point out is we've
- [00:00:20.790]done a lot of video development.
- [00:00:23.453]In collaboration with some grant projects,
- [00:00:25.172]we've created a number of videos on various topics.
- [00:00:27.818]And so we've housed those online at Vimeo.
- [00:00:29.941]So you can see the URL up there if you're interested
- [00:00:31.915]in checking those out.
- [00:00:33.192]And the way that we use those is as individual
- [00:00:34.980]learning objects or also incorporating those into
- [00:00:38.559]various online courses that we have and also
- [00:00:40.904]resident courses, too.
- [00:00:46.616]The next resource I want to highlight is called
- [00:00:48.659]Journey of a Gene.
- [00:00:49.913]And one of the significant things about this
- [00:00:52.026]resource is it's a website created in WordPress.
- [00:00:55.346]And it's mobile friendly.
- [00:00:56.809]And so learners can view it on their smartphones
- [00:00:59.318]all the way up to their computers and it works well
- [00:01:02.289]in any of those environments and those platforms.
- [00:01:05.028]And for this example, this was a graduate student project.
- [00:01:07.931]And it was focused on developing a resource that was
- [00:01:11.553]concise and described the process of genetic engineering
- [00:01:15.222]using the context of soybeans and sudden death syndrome.
- [00:01:21.182]For 15 years, we've had the Plant & Soil Sciences eLibrary
- [00:01:24.224]as a fabulous resource that comes out of this
- [00:01:26.151]department and this is collaborative.
- [00:01:28.195]It's an online library of sorts.
- [00:01:30.563]So we have a lot of resources there.
- [00:01:32.026]Text lessons, animations.
- [00:01:33.814]And we've also been able to deliver some courses
- [00:01:36.228]out of there.
- [00:01:36.810]So currently we're delivering some non-credit
- [00:01:38.736]or extension courses from the Plant & Soil
- [00:01:41.097]Sciences eLibrary.
- [00:01:42.165]And we also deliver them to academic students.
- [00:01:44.186]So we're excited about this.
- [00:01:45.532]It's a good foundation and we're gonna continue to build on
- [00:01:48.822]this resource as well.
- [00:01:52.119]I want to give you some current online stats of
- [00:01:54.371]how things are going in the department.
- [00:01:56.935]So we have 38 online courses.
- [00:01:59.072]Undergraduate as well as graduate courses.
- [00:02:02.113]17 instructors in the department that are teaching
- [00:02:04.580]those courses.
- [00:02:07.551]We have 47 Master's in Agronomy online students.
- [00:02:10.640]And when we hit December 2015,
- [00:02:13.565]so May 2014 to December 2015, we'll have graduated
- [00:02:17.132]10 Master students in Agronomy.
- [00:02:18.983]So we're very happy about that.
- [00:02:22.257]And then we also have some certificate programs.
- [00:02:25.577]And so we have the Plant Breeding & Genetics Certificate
- [00:02:27.527]program which is a professional certificate.
- [00:02:29.942]And we have about 40 learners in there.
- [00:02:32.816]And then we have seven Grassland Management
- [00:02:34.417]and four Horticulture Academic certificate learners.
- [00:02:37.273]And the difference is between the professional
- [00:02:39.223]and the academic is that the academic certificates can
- [00:02:42.019]kind of be a jumping off point if those learners are
- [00:02:44.033]interested in pursuing a Master's degree
- [00:02:46.285]after they've earned their 12 credits for the certificate.
- [00:02:50.023]And so these are just a variety of the things that we're
- [00:02:51.858]doing, kind of snapshot of how things are going.
- [00:02:57.330]Finally, I wanted to give you just a quick overview
- [00:02:59.049]of how it is we actually deliver our online courses.
- [00:03:01.812]So there's three ways.
- [00:03:03.019]The first way is synchronous.
- [00:03:04.568]And there's many terms you can use.
- [00:03:06.379]But these are the terms that I'm gonna use.
- [00:03:07.773]And I'll briefly define them.
- [00:03:09.282]So synchronous is that it's delivery of the face to face
- [00:03:11.813]class while at the same time, delivering to an
- [00:03:14.390]online audience.
- [00:03:17.316]We also have asynchronous courses which are
- [00:03:19.057]delivered strictly online.
- [00:03:20.659]No face to face contact with the students in
- [00:03:23.004]a classroom setting.
- [00:03:25.907]And then we have a hybrid or a blended approach.
- [00:03:27.787]Where the students receive the content online.
- [00:03:30.341]But then they come once a week for a session
- [00:03:32.617]face to face with the instructor and TA's
- [00:03:34.985]in order to continue the learning process.
- [00:03:38.143]So this last picture is of the Gooding Learning Center.
- [00:03:40.790]And there's been some remodeling and some updating
- [00:03:43.158]that's been going on over the last year.
- [00:03:46.316]And so it serves both on campus students as well as
- [00:03:50.147]facilitates learning for the online students.
- [00:03:52.074]So I have just a short video that's gonna give you a
- [00:03:54.094]tour of the changes and what things look like in the
- [00:03:56.741]Gooding Learning Center.
- [00:04:03.243](face paced music)
- [00:05:06.562]So with that, if you have any questions,
- [00:05:07.791]I'll be here the rest of the day and be happy
- [00:05:09.068]to chat with you.
- [00:05:09.915]Thanks.
- [00:05:10.984](applause)
