- [00:00:13.770]Hello, I'm Nebraska State Treasurer, Don Stenberg.
- [00:00:17.377]I want to encourage your school to participate
- [00:00:19.869]in the Personal Finance Challenge competition.
- [00:00:22.952]As part of that encouragement, we're offering scholarships
- [00:00:25.662]to the members of the winning teams,
- [00:00:27.780]a $2,000 scholarship
- [00:00:29.435]to each member of the first place team,
- [00:00:31.659]a $1,000 scholarship
- [00:00:33.581]to each member of the second place team,
- [00:00:35.897]and $500 to each member of the third place team.
- [00:00:39.975]These scholarships are being made available
- [00:00:41.838]by the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust,
- [00:00:44.568]which is Nebraska's state-sponsored college savings plan,
- [00:00:48.031]and which by the way,
- [00:00:49.236]is a great tax advantage way to save for college.
- [00:00:52.376]We'll also be offering iPads
- [00:00:54.759]to the teachers of the three winning teams.
- [00:00:57.179]With me today is Josh Hinrichs,
- [00:00:59.050]a business teacher at Lincoln Southwest High School.
- [00:01:01.548]Josh, why do encourage your students to participate
- [00:01:03.869]in the Personal Finance Challenge?
- [00:01:05.724]I think it's important for all students
- [00:01:07.028]to become financially aware, especially with the changes
- [00:01:09.891]that we're seeing in finance anymore
- [00:01:11.684]and how easy it is to get credit and things like that.
- [00:01:14.281]It's become even more important for students to know
- [00:01:17.314]what's going on with their finances,
- [00:01:18.796]and the Finance Challenge allows students
- [00:01:20.712]to kind of get some exposure to some scenarios
- [00:01:23.175]and see finance from a different point of view
- [00:01:26.038]than just the textbook.
- [00:01:27.439]What suggestions would you have for teachers
- [00:01:29.492]who are considering entering the contest?
- [00:01:31.526]Well, I know teachers always think
- [00:01:33.441]that they can't give up any time in their classroom
- [00:01:35.561]because it's, you know, time is precious in the room,
- [00:01:38.081]and it is, but this gives the students a chance
- [00:01:40.910]to kind of use, take the knowledge
- [00:01:42.810]that they've learned in the classroom and apply it.
- [00:01:45.336]It gives the students,
- [00:01:46.424]it gives the students something fun to do
- [00:01:48.337]with the curriculum that they've already learned,
- [00:01:50.082]and it gives the teachers something to use to kind of
- [00:01:52.624]encourage the students to keep learning in the classroom.
- [00:01:55.496]Well, thanks Josh.
- [00:01:57.132]The Personal Finance Challenge is sponsored
- [00:01:59.512]by the Nebraska Council on Economic Education.
- [00:02:02.703]And with us today, is Jennifer Davidson,
- [00:02:04.989]the president of the Council,
- [00:02:06.933]to tell you how to enter the contest.
- [00:02:10.281]Thanks.
- [00:02:11.290]This year's online competition will occur
- [00:02:13.019]March 21st to April 1st,
- [00:02:15.345]with the regional competition occurring April 21st
- [00:02:18.315]in Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney, Nebraska.
- [00:02:21.528]To register, please visit financechallenge.unl.edu.
- [00:02:25.148]Good luck!
- [00:02:26.622]Thanks Jennifer.
- [00:02:27.967]I plan to be a judge at one of the regional competitions,
- [00:02:30.686]so I hope to see some of you and your students there.
- [00:02:34.008]And remember, the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust
- [00:02:37.365]is a great way to handle
- [00:02:39.139]the Personal Finance Challenge of saving for college.
- [00:02:42.153]Good luck at the competition.
