- [00:00:09.576]Welcome to the College of Engineering.
- [00:00:11.515]We're glad you're here.
- [00:00:12.931]My name is David Jones.
- [00:00:15.288]I am the Associate Dean for the College of Engineering
- [00:00:18.109]and a professor in Biological Systems Engineering.
- [00:00:21.952]They've asked me to welcome to you,
- [00:00:23.310]and I'm glad that I have that opportunity.
- [00:00:26.572]We're gonna spend the next four years together,
- [00:00:28.987]helping you become the engineer that you want to be.
- [00:00:32.632]They also asked me to tell you
- [00:00:33.920]a little bit about myself.
- [00:00:35.674]Like I said, I'm a professor
- [00:00:37.171]in Biological Systems Engineering.
- [00:00:39.179]I've been here now for 25 years.
- [00:00:41.478]It's been a great time.
- [00:00:42.580]Prior to this, I was in a Ph.D.
- [00:00:45.680]at Oklahoma State University.
- [00:00:47.781]And even before that I was at Texas A&M
- [00:00:50.556]where I did a bachelor's and master's degree.
- [00:00:53.517]I grew up in a dryland cotton and cow operation
- [00:00:58.137]in West Texas out in the middle of nowhere.
- [00:01:00.633]So, you folks out in Western Nebraska
- [00:01:02.792]have something in common with me.
- [00:01:06.100]So, let me talk to you a little bit about engineering.
- [00:01:10.094]You are in a position to begin
- [00:01:12.189]an engineering career right now.
- [00:01:14.796]The question is, what type of engineer do you want to be?
- [00:01:18.859]What skills do you want to accumulate?
- [00:01:22.527]How do you want to use those skills?
- [00:01:25.081]Where do you want to use those skills?
- [00:01:27.357]And I think the most important questions are
- [00:01:30.154]who do you want to help with those skills?
- [00:01:33.311]Engineering is a people business.
- [00:01:36.375]It is about people.
- [00:01:37.827]Engineering is done for people.
- [00:01:39.776]And it is done through people.
- [00:01:43.006]Look at the next slide.
- [00:01:44.944]The next slide is
- [00:01:46.303]The Greatest Achievements of the 20th Century.
- [00:01:49.298]This list was compiled by the members
- [00:01:51.749]of the National Academy of Engineering.
- [00:01:55.196]Look at the list.
- [00:01:57.239]20 items,
- [00:01:58.643]20 achievements of the 20th century.
- [00:02:02.952]The list is impressive.
- [00:02:04.472]As you peruse the list,
- [00:02:05.899]and you consider what's on the list,
- [00:02:09.891]consider which of those are the most important to you.
- [00:02:13.874]Which of those that you take advantage of the most.
- [00:02:18.900]Maybe the most interesting question would be,
- [00:02:21.907]of those 20, which would you like to do without?
- [00:02:26.632]Could you do without any of them?
- [00:02:29.767]This list is important to us,
- [00:02:31.891]because it represents the engineering
- [00:02:34.270]that allows us to do what we do today.
- [00:02:38.009]It has allowed us to prosper.
- [00:02:40.482]It has allowed us to do,
- [00:02:42.791]make the strides that we've made.
- [00:02:46.693]It also allows you to come to college
- [00:02:49.676]and study engineering at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:02:53.356]That's our history.
- [00:02:55.295]But what are you doing to work on?
- [00:02:57.872]Are you doing to work on the 20th century problems,
- [00:03:01.517]or the 21st century problems?
- [00:03:04.785]As you look at this page,
- [00:03:06.085]notice that it is again from
- [00:03:07.316]the National Academy of Engineering,
- [00:03:08.964]the same people who gave us the previous list.
- [00:03:11.878]The question this time was not
- [00:03:14.084]what are the greatest achievements,
- [00:03:15.802]but what are the grand challenges
- [00:03:17.880]for engineering in the 21st century?
- [00:03:21.038]Examine this list, as well.
- [00:03:23.081]Take a look.
- [00:03:24.474]Solar energy.
- [00:03:26.239]Fusion.
- [00:03:27.342]Carbon sequestration.
- [00:03:29.373]Managing the nitrogen cycle.
- [00:03:31.637]Clean water.
- [00:03:32.856]Urban infranstructure.
- [00:03:34.283]Health informatics.
- [00:03:35.363]Medicines.
- [00:03:36.582]Reverse engineering the brain.
- [00:03:38.417]Nuclear terrorism.
- [00:03:39.636]Cybersecurity.
- [00:03:41.992]Virtual reality.
- [00:03:44.076]Personalized training.
- [00:03:46.874]Engineering the tools for scientific discovery.
- [00:03:51.076]This is where you're going to spend your career.
- [00:03:53.968]The jobs, the problems that you're gonna solve,
- [00:03:57.230]the jobs you're gonna take,
- [00:03:58.426]the research that you're going to do,
- [00:04:00.654]your professional career is going to be
- [00:04:03.789]around these grand challenges.
- [00:04:07.829]Can you see yourself working in these areas?
- [00:04:11.405]We do.
- [00:04:13.273]As such, we have spent our time
- [00:04:15.653]developing a curriculum
- [00:04:18.451]and a student experience
- [00:04:21.284]such that you are prepared
- [00:04:23.768]for these grand challenges.
- [00:04:26.868]How have we done that?
- [00:04:28.307]Well, the first thing we've done
- [00:04:29.689]is we've arranged the college
- [00:04:31.106]so that you have a broad selection of majors.
- [00:04:34.367]The majors in red are those majors
- [00:04:37.746]that are offered in Lincoln.
- [00:04:41.484]The majors in blue are those
- [00:04:43.386]that are offered in Omaha.
- [00:04:46.718]From this selection of majors,
- [00:04:48.424]it is clear to me that you will have the preparation
- [00:04:51.640]to engage and solve those grand challenges.
- [00:04:58.258]But this is the curriculum.
- [00:04:59.733]There's a lot more to your college experience
- [00:05:02.507]than just the curriculum.
- [00:05:04.317]You need to know and know where
- [00:05:07.708]to take advantage of opportunities
- [00:05:09.936]outside of the classroom,
- [00:05:11.771]and how to engage in those opportunities
- [00:05:14.429]outside of the classroom.
- [00:05:16.148]This first week of class, I am sure you are well on your way
- [00:05:19.410]to finding things outside the classroom.
- [00:05:23.752]But, we have Engineering Student Services
- [00:05:26.932]here to help you.
- [00:05:28.291]Engineering Student Services is a collection of resources
- [00:05:31.530]and people that are here to help you
- [00:05:34.733]be successful inside and outside the classroom.
- [00:05:38.611]As we guide our way to the website,
- [00:05:40.944]keep in mind that engineering is about people.
- [00:05:44.648]As much as we want to fill your head with knowledge
- [00:05:48.328]and build your hands-on skills,
- [00:05:51.694]we want to build you as a person, as well.
- [00:05:54.446]That is part of what Engineering Student Services
- [00:05:57.313]is all about.
- [00:05:59.008]The resources and people that are available to you
- [00:06:02.468]through Engineering Student Services
- [00:06:04.522]will be valuable to you as you go through the curriculum.
- [00:06:08.423]This includes tutoring,
- [00:06:11.872]student involvement,
- [00:06:14.124]finding work opportunities inside the college
- [00:06:17.061]and outside in the community,
- [00:06:19.395]and preparing you for your engineering career.
- [00:06:23.992]You will be hearing more about that
- [00:06:26.278]as this class continues.
- [00:06:30.678]So, are you ready to begin?
- [00:06:33.813]When you begin this process, we become partners.
- [00:06:37.574]We become partners in preparing you
- [00:06:39.768]to be the engineer that you need to be.
- [00:06:42.578]I said that engineering is about people.
- [00:06:45.817]It is for people and engineering is by people.
- [00:06:49.798]I want to highlight that and refer you to
- [00:06:52.898]the National Society of Professional Engineering
- [00:06:55.475]Code of Ethics.
- [00:06:56.613]Read through the preamble.
- [00:06:58.180]You will be exposed to this more than once.
- [00:07:01.419]If nothing else, pay particular attention
- [00:07:04.937]to the words in red.
- [00:07:07.909]It says, in short, that engineering is important.
- [00:07:11.995]It is a learned profession.
- [00:07:14.109]It holds us to the highest standards
- [00:07:17.126]of honesty and integrity.
- [00:07:19.646]It is about impacting the quality of life always.
- [00:07:23.419]It requires honesty, impartiality, and fairness,
- [00:07:27.773]and equity.
- [00:07:30.293]And furthermore, it must be dedicated
- [00:07:32.556]to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare.
- [00:07:37.095]To do all that, we must hold ourselves and each other
- [00:07:40.904]to the highest principles of ethical conduct.
- [00:07:44.711]This is because engineering is for people.
- [00:07:49.564]I hope you're ready.
- [00:07:50.614]We're ready for you.
- [00:07:52.147]Time to get the semester started.
- [00:07:54.074]Welcome to the College of Engineering.
