- [00:00:00.122]10 plus eight?
- [00:00:02.161]Students can have trouble learning
- [00:00:03.835]challenging material,
- [00:00:05.361]but what happens when a teacher has to compete
- [00:00:07.589]with a loud air conditioner?
- [00:00:11.870]A team of researchers from
- [00:00:13.414]the University of Nebraska, Lincoln,
- [00:00:15.312]is trying to answer that question.
- [00:00:17.435]Well right now we're measuring air velocity,
- [00:00:19.686]so we have different probes at different heights.
- [00:00:23.611]A variety of measurements taken
- [00:00:25.253]in more than 200 Nebraska classrooms will help determine
- [00:00:28.528]how the environment affects learning.
- [00:00:31.088]The question is whether or not the environmental
- [00:00:35.055]variables in a classroom affect student achievement.
- [00:00:37.797]Project leader Lily Wang is an acoustics
- [00:00:40.462]expert at the UNL Durham School of Architectural
- [00:00:43.461]Engineering and Construction.
- [00:00:45.806]Wang and her colleagues are studying the effects
- [00:00:48.378]of acoustics, indoor air quality, and lighting
- [00:00:51.535]on student achievement.
- [00:00:53.327]You can find people who have
- [00:00:54.816]just shown the effects of lighting,
- [00:00:56.330]or just shown the effects of the acoustics,
- [00:00:58.346]or just of temperature,
- [00:00:59.956]but no one has actually been able to put together
- [00:01:02.133]a team that looks at all of them.
- [00:01:03.828]Measurements are taken in empty classrooms
- [00:01:06.110]by a team of students working after school.
- [00:01:09.171]Test kits deployed in the classroom also collect
- [00:01:11.960]information during the school day.
- [00:01:14.166]That will show us how things are changing
- [00:01:16.258]over the course of a day,
- [00:01:18.146]you know, how does the carbon dioxide level change,
- [00:01:20.535]how did the sound levels change,
- [00:01:22.412]how is the day lighting in the classroom,
- [00:01:24.150]also electric lighting as they turn on and off the lights.
- [00:01:27.052]This is just a really great experience to see
- [00:01:30.071]what kind of measurements are necessary
- [00:01:33.164]to look at the architectural aspects
- [00:01:36.225]of certain environments.
- [00:01:37.994]It's a really cool thing to be a part of.
- [00:01:40.246]Data will be analyzed and compared
- [00:01:42.336]with student performance on standardized tests,
- [00:01:45.451]resulting information will be shared with school districts.
- [00:01:48.970]That's our goal, is to be able to help
- [00:01:51.595]school administrators and school designers understand
- [00:01:56.053]better how to utilize funds to better design
- [00:02:00.373]school environments.
- [00:02:02.080]UNL is one of seven research groups nationally
- [00:02:04.959]to be funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
- [00:02:08.192]Healthy Schools initiative.
- [00:02:10.517]Researchers hope the project will help take some
- [00:02:13.226]of the struggle out of learning.
