- [00:00:17.040]at Leo A Daly.
- [00:00:18.410]I'm Sean Coffey, and I'm an architecture intern
- [00:00:20.267]at Leo A Daly.
- [00:00:25.143]A lot.
- [00:00:26.072]All kinds of different things.
- [00:00:27.140]A little bit of everything.
- [00:00:28.045]A number of projects for the VA.
- [00:00:30.483]A development project
- [00:00:33.038]out near village point.
- [00:00:34.686]Mainly graphics and helping
- [00:00:36.288]with, like, the layouts of the spaces.
- [00:00:39.260]Chapel design.
- [00:00:40.653]Air traffic control tower.
- [00:00:42.023]Cadaver lab.
- [00:00:43.022]Finish boards, art.
- [00:00:45.762]We're sort of working on an office building,
- [00:00:48.316]and he kind of just gave me free reins,
- [00:00:51.032]and so we would chat and then he'd say,
- [00:00:52.867]"Alright, go. Just make something."
- [00:00:55.258]And so we, yeah, that was a lot of fun.
- [00:00:57.092]It was awesome.
- [00:00:58.323]Didn't think I would be doing anything like that.
- [00:01:02.549]The three things that I've mainly gotten out of this are
- [00:01:05.591]the experience, the people, and the opportunity.
- [00:01:09.073]That makes it very unique from other firms.
- [00:01:11.535]You get a feel for the relationships that you have
- [00:01:14.158]with contractors and builders.
- [00:01:15.969]I realized I really wanted to learn more software.
- [00:01:18.431]So, I feel like getting that exposure early on
- [00:01:21.774]in a relatively comfortable, low pressure environment
- [00:01:27.184]has really prepared me well to apply it
- [00:01:31.782]the day I need it.
- [00:01:32.896]You get a lot of real world experience.
- [00:01:35.009]You know, school can only teach you so much,
- [00:01:37.888]but when you're working here everyday,
- [00:01:41.023]and interning and seeing what,
- [00:01:42.834]you know, not even your discipline is like,
- [00:01:44.993]but you know, there's architects, engineers, all that stuff.
- [00:01:48.917]You get a real idea of how the real world is gonna be
- [00:01:52.795]in your field.
- [00:01:56.579]I didn't think that I would really like
- [00:01:59.157]working at a bigger firm like this,
- [00:02:01.897]but Leo does a great job of making it feel small,
- [00:02:05.287]which is cool.
- [00:02:06.192]I think even just the daily conversation you overhear
- [00:02:08.816]of the engineers sitting next to you,
- [00:02:10.650]I've learned a lot.
- [00:02:11.997]So, it just gives me a broader perspective,
- [00:02:14.133]as opposed to just a small design firm.
- [00:02:16.826]I've been able to develop great comradery
- [00:02:18.916]with some of the architects,
- [00:02:20.054]and other people I've worked with on projects,
- [00:02:21.888]so, it's been a great experience.
- [00:02:24.233]You'll never meet nicer people that,
- [00:02:26.203]people that wanna teach you.
- [00:02:27.898]It's cool because they're a little family
- [00:02:30.103]inside this larger family.
- [00:02:33.006]They're really close, they help each other out a lot,
- [00:02:35.560]which is great.
- [00:02:36.837]I could not have asked for a better company to come to.
- [00:02:43.338]The skills that you develop here,
- [00:02:45.242]as opposed to, maybe another firm or a contractor,
- [00:02:48.307]anywhere else you could intern,
- [00:02:49.816]those really make you valueable.
- [00:02:51.140]I got to do way more than I expected.
- [00:02:52.951]I thought I'd be doing lots of, sort of,
- [00:02:56.387]mind-numbing, boring tasks,
- [00:02:58.361]but I've gotten to do a lot of design.
- [00:03:00.590]It's been really helpful to grow.
- [00:03:02.563]You grow more quickly with a team environment like this,
- [00:03:06.534]and everyone's so friendly,
- [00:03:07.997]and they wanna help,
- [00:03:09.483]and they know that you're sort of lost as an intern.
- [00:03:13.500]And, yeah, it's been a great way to really just cover
- [00:03:16.727]more ground than you ever thought you would.
- [00:03:18.724]Before I started this internship,
- [00:03:20.767]I was still a little shaky on whether structural engineering
- [00:03:24.320]was still meant for me,
- [00:03:26.224]but with all the training, I'm getting more comfortable,
- [00:03:28.546]and more excited with all the unique
- [00:03:31.889]projects Leo A Daly does.
- [00:03:33.538]It does open up a lot of interesting structural problems,
- [00:03:36.881]which excite me.
- [00:03:37.996]So, this has really been my first major design internship,
- [00:03:42.593]so it's been great.
