- [00:00:02.378]I study how people make decisions about other people.
- [00:00:05.205]So, for example, a wink could signal
- [00:00:08.021]a show of support, it could be a flirtation,
- [00:00:10.485]it could mean somebody just has something in their eye.
- [00:00:12.906]The way we resolve these uncertainties
- [00:00:14.975]can have really enormous implications
- [00:00:16.969]for our social interactions.
- [00:00:18.879]MRI is just one of the ways
- [00:00:20.381]we can get at what's going on under the surface.
- [00:00:24.435]We can show pictures while they're in the MRI.
- [00:00:25.962]Faces just appear one at a time,
- [00:00:28.287]and people also have a couple buttons in their right hand
- [00:00:31.487]where they can make decisions.
- [00:00:32.756]So as they're seeing facial expressions appear on the screen
- [00:00:35.658]they can go ahead and rate each one as positive or negative.
- [00:00:39.070]We look at basically what's going on in their brain
- [00:00:41.694]while they make this decision.
- [00:00:43.336]For example we can get at
- [00:00:44.563]if there are certain parts of the brain
- [00:00:46.140]that are really emotionally reactive,
- [00:00:48.499]we can see that,
- [00:00:49.757]even if the person isn't necessarily aware of it
- [00:00:52.541]and they wouldn't necessarily report
- [00:00:54.184]feeling emotionally reactive,
- [00:00:56.935]but their brain is telling us something different.
- [00:00:59.570]There are a number of different psychological disorders
- [00:01:01.948]that are associated with having
- [00:01:03.431]a kind of extreme bias,
- [00:01:05.339]especially when it comes to emotion processing.
- [00:01:07.398]So, for example, people that have depression or anxiety,
- [00:01:11.238]those pathologies are characterized
- [00:01:12.721]by having a fundamental negativity bias.
- [00:01:15.196]And so we can study basically
- [00:01:17.147]where this negativity bias might be coming from,
- [00:01:19.707]and specifically if it's coming from
- [00:01:21.254]somewhere in their brain.
- [00:01:22.832]NCB3, as far as I know, is one of the only centers
- [00:01:26.107]that brings together people from really diverse backgrounds.
- [00:01:28.741]And we're all kinda working together
- [00:01:30.288]to try to understand what's going on in the brain.
