[00:00:02.633]The goal of our research is to better understand risk factors for behavioral disorders
[00:00:08.745]with an eye towards eventually contributing towards prevention and treatment.
[00:00:13.457]Your brain is a biological organ which is made up of lots of different cell types
[00:00:18.721]and we're interested in understanding how genes can contribute to structural
[00:00:24.905]differences and functional differences of brains.
[00:00:28.809]In this lab, we extract DNA from people's cheek cell and saliva samples.
[00:00:34.881]We're interested in understanding how genetic differences between people
[00:00:40.569]influence their tendencies to engage in health risk behaviors such as substance use.
[00:00:48.099]And we also study these behavior traits of impulsivity and emotion regulation
[00:00:52.537]because they're key steps on the pathway between genes and risky behaviors.
[00:00:58.697]We're not talking about one gene causing a particular behavior.
[00:01:02.771]But that these behaviors are complex products of lots of genes and lots of
[00:01:10.329]different behavioral, environmental experiences.
[00:01:13.113]We're using the genetic information to know more about the underlying biology of a
[00:01:17.369]particular condition and that might help in the development of different kinds of treatment.
[00:01:22.857]CB3's great because it really facilitates collaboration between researchers
[00:01:28.809]and it also provides some new avenues for research for the behavior genetics lab,
[00:01:34.673]like for concussions or brain imaging.
[00:01:37.633]These are things that we really weren't involved with before
[00:01:40.361]but we're going to be involved with in the future.
