- [00:00:02.852]We bring people into this lab
- [00:00:04.085]and we expose them to all kinds of stimuli.
- [00:00:06.684]Odors, some of it is images.
- [00:00:08.917]Some of it's sounds.
- [00:00:09.844]And then we observe how people react
- [00:00:11.950]and these machines allow us to very subtly
- [00:00:14.352]find out if they have an emotional
- [00:00:15.652]response or not to those stimuli.
- [00:00:17.419]The goal of our research is to really understand
- [00:00:19.551]what's going on inside people
- [00:00:20.784]and why these inner workings lead people
- [00:00:23.685]to very different political conclusions.
- [00:00:25.384]Some at the right, and some on the left.
- [00:00:27.252]Some really into politics and some
- [00:00:29.051]very disinterested in politics.
- [00:00:31.618]Kind of surprising that we find that
- [00:00:33.052]people's political beliefs can be predicted
- [00:00:35.319]on the basis of their responses
- [00:00:36.818]to these very non political stimuli.
- [00:00:38.552]The information on why some people
- [00:00:41.451]participate and some people don't,
- [00:00:42.751]we think could be useful
- [00:00:43.885]in figuring out some of the problems
- [00:00:45.218]of low participation in the United States
- [00:00:47.685]and elsewhere around the world
- [00:00:48.885]as far as that's concerned.
- [00:00:50.051]We found that people who have high stress levels
- [00:00:51.785]tend not to vote, so we're thinking
- [00:00:53.419]if there's some way we can diminish
- [00:00:54.651]the amount of stress in the environment
- [00:00:56.184]then perhaps we could increase voter turnout.
- [00:00:58.318]The concentration of many different labs in one building
- [00:01:01.585]is really a great advantage.
- [00:01:02.884]Because one of the useful things
- [00:01:04.117]is to look at responses in different methodologies.
- [00:01:06.984]The fact that we can look at them
- [00:01:08.284]with all kinds of different techniques
- [00:01:09.784]with the same person really allows
- [00:01:11.750]a lot of cross fertilization.
