- [00:00:00.056](upbeat music)
- [00:00:02.402]Our research is involved with studying mechanisms
- [00:00:07.042]of plasticity in the nervous system.
- [00:00:10.103]Plasticity is a process that involves the rewiring,
- [00:00:15.010]or reorganization, of the brain
- [00:00:17.730]following an injury such as a stroke.
- [00:00:20.538]The ultimate goal of my research is to improve recovery
- [00:00:25.528]following stroke, injury to the brain,
- [00:00:29.945]to allow patients to improve the quality of life,
- [00:00:33.805]to regain movements, and regain functional activities.
- [00:00:38.666]Over here to my right is an instrument
- [00:00:41.634]that's known as the Galileo,
- [00:00:43.447]which was developed in my laboratory
- [00:00:47.343]a few years back,
- [00:00:49.143]and this instrument generates
- [00:00:52.578]pressurized touch stimuli,
- [00:00:55.138]so it simulates touch to the surface of the skin.
- [00:00:59.895]This is important because we've learned
- [00:01:02.209]that this type of simulation can actually induce recovery
- [00:01:07.158]in areas surrounding the damaged parts of the brain.
- [00:01:12.011]Our plans for the stroke population will involve
- [00:01:16.192]a visit to the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior
- [00:01:19.502]so that we can take an initial MRI scan, or picture,
- [00:01:24.376]of their brain, and also to study its function
- [00:01:27.875]before any sort of therapy or intervention is introduced.
- [00:01:32.248]Those patients will then undergo
- [00:01:34.956]approximately two weeks of therapy
- [00:01:38.113]with the Galileo somatosensory stimulator.
- [00:01:41.782]After that therapy is completed,
- [00:01:44.459]our stroke patients will return to the Center
- [00:01:48.011]and be imaged a second time to document,
- [00:01:51.701]or quantify, the effects of the therapy
- [00:01:54.496]on both brain structure as well as brain function.
- [00:01:58.805]And our goal has really been translational neuroscience,
- [00:02:03.007]so taking it from the bench,
- [00:02:05.151]making the translation into a useful clinical product
- [00:02:09.614]that can really do some good.
